Title: ARRRRGGHH!!!
Post by comptech_69 on 20.01.06 at 22:52:22
I got this laptop about 6 months ago, now I need to upgrade again   :'(

Yet again Microsoft made me want to put a fist through my TFT screen  >:(

Hmm, I think even 6 months ago it wouldn't have been different because the PIII 1133 wasn't even at that time a "state-of-the-art-CPU".

My opinion: if the laptop is fast enough for you you don't need to upgrade. ;) It's a "small but nice"-laptop, you don't see a PIII in a laptop everyday, least of all such a fast PIII.

Yeah, when I bought it I didnt want anything too powerful, I mainly use it for internet, photoshoping, and low-end games like half-life... It was exactly what I wanted (P4's suck too much juice), minus the 64MB RAM but I even upgraded that to 1024. It does everything I want it to with really good speed, I dont overlaod it too much it rarely even lags heavily using photoshop CS2, It just annoyed me becuase I wanted to download the new NFS demo and it wouldnt let me, stupid microsoft I'm installing MAC OS X  ;)

Performance graphs suck A$$ - ignore them and just get on with what you want to do anyhow... ::)

hehe indeed , the important thing is if you can run everything fine that you need it for, why upgrade ;)

My Laptop was one the fastest of it's time, it has a Pentium4 -E HT 3400Mhz with 1MB L2, 800Mhz FSB, 2x 512MB Infineon PC-3200 CAS2 in Dual DDR mode the Rare and Elusive ATi M18 Mobillity Radeon 9800 with 256Bit 256MB 2.5ns DDRII

it's core the ATI R420 with 8 pipes and 4 Vertex Shader Units that made me choose this Dell Inspiron 9100 X-treme, because there was no other vendor with such a powerfull graphics chip, there were Mobile A64's with ATi M11's only they don't have the R420 as core and only have 4 pipes and 2 vertex units and only 128 Bit DDR1 hehe too slow for FS 2004 @ max quallity @ 1280 x 800 x32  and Call Of Duty2, FarCry and so on I wanted something for the real heavy stuff and normally I rather go for A64 Mobile with ATi M18 but that just wasn't there so I went for this Dell and like I said it runs everything I want it to, so there is no need to upgrade ;)

here it's name & specs:

YODA

Dell Inspiron 9100 X-treme'
Intel Pentium4 HT 3400Mhz Prescott  LGA478 1MB L2 800Mhz FSB  ;D
Intel i864PE Dual Channel DDR 400 mobo
4.1 onboard AC97's sound card + Internal Subwoofer
10/100MBit Lan
11/54MBit WLAN
2x  512MB PC-3200 DDR 400 Infineon in Dual DDR mode
ATi M18 Mobillity Radeon 9800 AGP 256MB 256Bit DDRII Hynx 2.5ns 8)
15,4" WUXGA TFT
Max Reso & Refresh: 1920 x 1200 x 32 @ 60Herz
Fujitsu 2,5" 100GB ATA100 4200 rpm HDD 2Mb Cache
Logitech Cordless MouseMan Optical
Color's : Dell Black/Venice Blue and Chrome
Dell 150W External PSU

The Dell Inspiron 9100 X-treme was a limited choice with the ATi M18 it was a special offer normally the M18 was only sold in the Dell Inspiron 9100 XPS systems of that time ;) anyways I choose ATi for Laptops  always the best Image Quallity and best performance, dunno what's in petto now hehe, My Laptop is only 10 mounths old, no need to upgrade yet not within a longshot hehe.

here's my Laptop btw :)

I hate those laptops their a bytch to work on and always have problems, I can't even count how many times I've had to replace motherboards in those machines (I work for Dell as a service tech), have you had any problems with it or did you get the rare good unit?  ;)

I use to be a real Dell fan untill I started working for them, lol!

Title: Re: ARRRRGGHH!!!

lol well I never have problems with it hehe to be honest I know lot's of people that use Dell Laptops they are known to be the best ones out there, the Dell Inspiron series have scored well here :)

even the local banks use them and so on, it's the best system I've had in years, it never crashes, really for 2400 Euro's that should be worth it also ;)

Yeah I reccomended dell to everyone, I even talked my mom into buying a really nice new system, than I started working for them and I was like WOAH these things have alot of problems  :-/

hmm maybe you got the the bad ones maybe, my experience with Dell and that of my friends and ex-collegues is suppurb I suppose your experience was not such on the bright side, I mean it does not mean that Dell is bad or so hehe oh well I know how that feels, I had the same with 3dfx also with a Voodoo5 5500 AGP it was DOA and I payed lot's for it but never got my money back for it and so on.

anyways that's a long big story hehe.

anyways the MR9800 rocks in games :)

Dell laptops are a total NIGHTMARE to do maintenance on! >:(

I had a mate of mine who had one of these old Dell laptops that was in need of a good clean and an overhaul... :P

...it's like trying to disassemble the lock on the doors of Fort Knox...REALLY! :o

Alot of the systems were users that just used the computers and knew nothing about them. I had to replace a motherboard in a certian laptop 5 times becuase the idiots kept sending me bad mobo's. I also had this intersting optiplex. I set up the gus computer for him and it worked great, the next day I get dispached out there for a no post issue. Replaced the motherboard and processor and it worked fine. Next day same problem, had to reaplace the powersupply and front panel. All in all spent about 3 hours on the phone with osama bin laden explaining to him that the computer was a pos and I needed new parts every time I went out there, and out of the 4 service calls all I wanted was the damn powersupply but noooo they have to do things their way; idiots. By the time I was done, the guy's whole computer minus the case was a used-reman because all dell's replacement parts are used remans. I was like, If I was you I would go out and buy a different computer beucas enow you have a computer full of old previously-broken parts  ;)

hmm sh*t happens,  the thing is that when just someone has one to 5 bad experiences with a brand they say the brand is very bad, those parts could of been manufacture faults that can happen with every brand, Dell Computers still have one of the best laptop markets around togeather with Alienware, Voodoo extreme and so on.

The most companies use either Dell, HP or IBM and the most sold parts are Dell parts here in this part of The Netherlands and Dell has a very good rep here, maybe the Americans are doing something wrong , I suppose poeple make mistakes everywhere lol.

To me Dell Laptops PWN, I simply never had probs with mine and neither do me mates .

I was told specifically by my boss not to down-talk the machines  ;)

I've owned a dell laptop, I really liked it untill it caught fire  :o

I got a toshiba satellite 1755 given to me, it singlehandedly made me hate toshiba. When it finally died i went looking for a new laptop, I wanted an XPS laptop but for what I wanted it was too expensive, I got exactly what I wanted from toshiba for A LOT cheaper, and I'm definately happy with my choice. I hated toshiba untill this machine, and I love it. Mabye I too got the rare good machine LOL

Title: Re: ARRRRGGHH!!!
Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 22.01.06 at 01:43:04
hmm Toshiba's are okay it depends on what you need them for, at the time I bought my i9100 Xtreme it was the fastest thing available here in N: so all the other brands were knocked out okay there was also Alienware as a choice but that would of cost met 1400 euro's at least more by budget was 2600 and Dell's 9100 X-treme was the perfect choice really it runs like hell and it runs everything I want it to.

the difference is that your experience with Dell was bad okay that's possible but it does not mean Dell is a bad brand. lol

HAHA sounds like your working for the same company! I actually worked for both Banctec (Syntex) And Qualikserv. I believe the Printers & HP calls are Banctec calls, IDK too many freaking calls to keep up with  ;)

Bwahahahaha! Yup, that sounds like a DELL! ;D

I worked in the H.P. Printers customer service dept for a while... ::) :P

I can tell you that there are about THREE of their entire printer range that are actually worth buying. ::)

1. Their top of the range wireless printer.
2. The next model down (same, but no card reader)
3. A really old (not manufactured anymore) model

I'll not be 'specific' with model numbers to avoid the evil of lawyers...wooo, spooky! :o

Yeah, I bought a car with 45,000 miles on it it now has 61,000+ and I've only been doing it a month for banctec  >:(

Edit: w00t I'm a jr member!

I HATE IT when they send the wrong/broken part and you have to talk to the idiots in india... they never issued me a DCSE # so the crappity smacking terrorists refused to help me/ship needed parts every so often so I would call up syntex and talk to hank and he would call dell and scream at them with me in conference for like 10 minutes and I would get my needed parts  ;D

??? ??? ???

I've always liked epson printers, I had an epson photo 750 or something like that.. Printed the BEST pictures I've ever seen come out of a printer. Untill it ran out of ink and the head clogged. For those of you that don't understand why it's worthless now is becuase with epson printers (at least the high end ones I had), they only have ink carts., the print head is not part of the cart. it is actually a mechanical part of the printer, that is why they produce excellent photos. Too bad I couldn't get it serviced, I learned my lesson about letting my ink run too low!  :'(

WTF? ???

I also agree that Epson printers are a bit cruddy...but for different reasons. :P

I used to own one that worked GREAT...until the lubricant on the metal bar that the print head moves on dried up, then the printer died a death! ::)

hmm you desition not mine, no complaints here 8) mine works perfect so do all of my friends do + all the other hm 47 companies  hehe maybe more lost count lol oh well Dell is still a leading company in Laptop technology, every brand has thier up's and downs...

it's because you had a few models that didn't cope you'd hate Dell  , abit overboard, oh well maybe just a bad experience then.

I'll only choose Dell for some speciffic Laptop models not thier Desktop PC's, it's because of the M18 that was in the 9100 Xtreme I have that made it most interesting. It crushed all the laptops of it's time with ease, I needed it for FS 2004 on the go since I travel alot and I have it for more than 16 mounths same install and it never failed on me once ;)

and all the people I know from companies here in this part of Europe only had good words of great experiences never heard someone complain that much, so some stories can be exagerating at most times.

Like thandor said I think Dell made more good machines than 25 bad ones, Thandor has a point and a very good one too.

If someone works for at 'service tech' I think he/she will get the broken pieces to fix. Why fix a working piece ?
If someone receives 25 Dell machines to repair it may sound much but actually it doesn't say anything about the quality. Maybe Dell sold 2500 other systems as well.

Wel, 25 is only 1% from 2500, so 1% broken machines isn't that much anymore. Not to mention the broken machines which aren't hardware failures but human failures. (Which can vary from software problems to careless handling of the hardware.

Many people destroy their hardware while upgrading/modding or something. They just RMA it, those RMA'ed pieces shouldn't be RMA'ed at all (it's not the manufacturers fault that it broke) and I don't count them as a failure from a company.

Post by jandarsun8 on 25.01.06 at 04:55:12
Well before I was doing contract work for Dell I was working at a cable company doing network support there and we had all brands of laptops. The Compaq Evo 610C's were pretty solid laptops- my top pick. Our higher level managers had those and out of 35 of them, we had two that had issues. We had Toshiba Satellites (1000,1200,1800). For the beatings that those things took and kept working, I'm amazed. Field techs had those and they were dropped, kicked, spilled on, slid around the middle of the seats on the floor in the vans and just generally took a beating. They help up pretty good. We had some Sony's and they didn't last long at all. Don't remember the models that they were but I didn't like them at all. The Dell laptops we had were pretty decent, didn't have much problems with them. Don't remember the models of those either.

But since working here, I can tell you what models to stay away from. Inspiron 5150's, 5160's, 600m series for sure. I've been changing out motherboards on at least one of those models once a week since I started last April. Dimensions 3000,4600, and 4700's have had many issues as well.

Obi, your 9100 hasn't been to bad at least in our area. I've only worked on about 10-14 of them, don't really remember, but it averages about a motherboard change a month.  Which if you look at it, isn't to bad.

I'm not going to bash Dell, hell they pay my checks right now, but I see general sh*t with every brand. Doesn't really matter. I've built my own machine and have gone through 4 different hard drives in the last 6 months. Then industry as a whole as gone down as far as quality goes because prices have come down so much they are trying to push more out the door. I've got an 8 Gig and a 10 Gig drives that I've had for years with no problems but get a 160 gig and it won't last more then two years, max. The industry has just gone down hill because of quality, the public as a whole wants more speed, more power and more space. I don't see this trend stopping any time soon. The only place I haven't seen this at the CPU level and more specifically with AMD although I don't see many problems as far as functionalitly (?) goes either. Both seem to be pretty solid no matter what chip or version you get.

well if it works why fix it ;) and my 9100 does it like it should do and no need for change here :) it's perfect for on the Go needs and specially for Flight Simulator 2004 so I can keep up my flying everywhere ofcourse ;)

but yes there is s*t everywhere that talk about that Dell is bad and Toshiba isn't is just gossip to me I ignore that crap lol

maybe just bad experiences from users, possibly a reason of thier reactions but sometimes they can exagerate things lol, which sounds n00bish imho.

IMO toshiba is the ford of computers, unfortuinately I own 3 toshibas... lol. Out of all 3 I only like one because it's a tank. I needa find the pic of my satellite 1755 to post here so you can all get a good laugh!

jandarsun8 is right, there are a few brands that you just need to stay away from. The worst I've seen for desktops are the dimension series. Not any specific one, but all of them in gerneal seem really bad. I'm always working on a dimension, ESPECIALLY the B110 series (entry level PC's). I've seen some pretty molested E310 series also, but their pretty stable, but when they die, god to they die! The XPS is truely an amazing machine, I've only worked on one before (600 series) changing out a powersupply (IT'S THE WHOLE FRAKING BOTTOM OF THE COMPUTER!!!!) beucae it was simply missing one of theouter plastic moldings...

As for laptops, all the widescreen ones are just $hit. alot of them have videocard and tft screen issues. I've replaced many motherboards in the 51XX series laptops and the junk 600m's dont even get me started... lol! I've worked on only one 9100 thus far and it was so long ago I don't even remember what needed to be done to it. I'm pretty sure it was the processor fan though.

If I was to go out and buy a new laptop today I would definately get an HP becuase they seem to hae pretty nice machines, mostly for the AMD processor though (that would be 90% of my choice  ;D)

All in all the only toshiba I like is my tecra, I have a desktop and a satellite 1755... junk.

As for Dell's I HATE my printer OMG! lol... I did like my oldschool Dell laptop though, that thing got hte living $hit beaten out of it (literally it got beaten with a crowbar and still worked!) and worked flawlessly for months afterwards. I'm pretty sure the fire was caused my a loose screw somewhere shorting out in someplace it was supposed to be.

Like I stated origionally, I wanted a Dell XPS laptop but I couldnt find what I really wanted from Dell but I did from toshiba as much as I REALLY didnt want a Toshiba. I'm happy with my decision but I wish I had a badass gaming laptop becuase sine my otherboard went in my server this is currently my fastest computer I own  :'(

well don't begin about Ford GMC a major engine part for Ford USA lol, might be going bankrupt in a few years the way they are going lol

anyways I rather have an IP4HT E 3400 with Dual DDR 400 & a n ATi M18 R420 instead of an A64M 3200+ with a slow M11 :-/ The 9100 X-Treme was my best choice for my moneu of it's time the ATi M18 made me take it and it's Dual DDR 400 Memory in it the fastest AMD system of that day only had a M11 no thanx

As you can see the specs of an ATi M18 aka MR 9800 Crushes the specs that of an ATi M11 aka MR9700:

my laptop was the fastest of it's time thanx to this card and it still proves it's self to what it is, it stable it never locks up, I have simply never met such a rock solid system and have heard this from alot of people I know also, okay I understand that you had a bad experience with Dell stuff but that does not mean Dell is to blame, you recieved some bad parts well every brand can have that like HP or so lol.

But since working here, I can tell you what models to stay away from. Inspiron 5150's, 5160's, 600m series for sure. I've been changing out motherboards on at least one of those models once a week since I started last April. Dimensions 3000,4600, and 4700's have had many issues as well.

I thought sure my laptop would be on the "stay away from" list, it's a Dell Inspiron 1200 I only paid 499US$ for it new. I figured it as fast as the tech. is changing I'll be looking at a new one in 2 years anyway, why spend an arm and a leg on something that I toss in 2 years :-/

Hey Gamma, no really haven't seen many problems with that model. Dells, got another series called the 300m or 300XL or something, it's small, has like a 12 or 13' screen but for what ever reason that models been out for about 2 years and I"ve only worked on three of them, two keyboards and a cd rom so what ever they did with that model they need to replicate. They're hit and miss, some models just plain suck and others are rock solid. Obi's got a pretty solid machine, they are pain to work on but can generally change a board on one of those in about 35 minutes so they aren't to bad. Alienware has a very nice laptop, had a chance to use one of those and the thing flew. Seem to be pretty solid from what I've heard although haven't had the money myself, to ever get one.

yeah Mine is very solid it is, I wouldn't lie about that anyway what would be the point in that anyways.

here some nice shot's of Flight Sim 2004 @ 1280 x 800 x32 FSAA x4 AF x16 really this Laptop ain't slow :)

the flight to Quindhao International China took me 12 hours from Schiphol International Amsterdam, yes I did that in realtime, first flew to Shanghai then 1867 KM south of Shanghai to Quindhao International on the i9100 and everything was handeled with perfection @ 54 frames per sec which is sufficiant.

all detail was put to it max, and I know that there weren't many Laptops that time that couldn't handle FS2004 at these settings like the i9100 Xtreme would, anyways still happy I made the move, normal laptops might overheat after 12 hours of stressfull 3D work.

Glad to hear that. The company bought me this one, and a purchased a second one for my daughter for school. I figured it was good enough for a couple of years. I do several upgrades a year on my deaktop machine but for the laptops, I wouldn't do anything more that memory and possibly a H.D.D. It's just a tool. No gaming on the laptop. I know it's possible on the high end laptops but I'd rather spend the money on a fast vid card for my desktop machine. Laptops do have a purpose for me (work) :P

I do agree with you but since I travel alot I can play FS 2004, Call Of Duty2, Descent3 and other games on the go as well, so that is why the laptop is my choice ;)

But not to worry my PC will be next :) an ATi Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition AGP, 2x OpteronDP 250 CG & 2x 1024MB Corsair XMS PlatinumPC3200 ECC Reg. is Next ;D

Time to upgrade the Dual OpteronDP 244 CG.

That's true if you do piece work and your good.

The first few laptops I took my sweet ass time with them to make sure I got every screw every piece and to jsut memorize the unit inside and out. After a few disassemblies on a few units I pretty much had the whole thing memorized enough to completely disassemble it and swap out the components in minutes. The trick is to depending on what your replacing to only remove certain screws and disassemble certian things and definately to get the tft screen detached and out of the way as soon as you can. I can pretty much dissassemble most dell laptops blindfolded. The only laptop I believe I haven't worked on yet is an XPS. Since we only do warranty repair work I haven't touched anything old-school either (other than my personal ones and ones for frineds and other random customers for my own work)

even people that think that they are GOOD make mistakes also lol. nobody's perfect imho, that's all BS.

Dell is a good brand nothing wrong with I think, if you had a bad experience with it that is not my concern.
