Title: Asus A7V rev 1.02 problems ????
Post by Leveller on 22.02.10 at 19:47:30
I have just built a retro rig, with, an Asus A7V mobo -rev 1.02,I have 1GB of PC133 SDram in it,a voodoo3 16mb agp card,a 60GB HD,an AMD ATHLON 2000+XP cpu,a vortex sound card, dual booting with Win 98 and XP,I am looking to tri-boot it with Win 95 as well, but,XP is backwards compatible,so,I might not bother
The problem I am having IS,my cpu, according to cpuworld, should be running at 1.67ghz,when I check 'System' in the control panel,it says its a Duron, running at 1.25ghz,I swapped cpu's,I put in an Athlon 1800x,it said a similar thing,it was a Duron running at 1.15 ghz
WHY??? is this, can anyone help me
I've looked online, can't seem to find anything out

Do I need to update the BIOS,that WAS my first though btw

Any help here guys would be appreciated
Cheers
Leveller

12,5 * 133 = 1667
12,5 * 100 = 1250
I think (and a random review from the net confirms this), that this mobo doesn't support 133 MHz fsb.

What I don't quite understand though,is,according to Asus, this board does support 133mhz  :o,Oh well,I'll live it with for now  ;)
Thanks for your help mate, much appreciated  :)

Confirmed: http://support.asus.com/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=A7V%28MB%29&product=1&os=17

the fastest you can run is an Athlon 1400 @ 200MHz on an ASUS A7V

Should be pretty cheap to get  slightly better board to support your CPUs.

Thanks Razrx
I can live with that for now, like I say mate,it's just an old retro rig, doesn't really matter what cpu speed I get,as long as I can get to play a few oldies
I was just a bit confused as to why I had an Athlon 2000xp+ running at 1.25ghz,when, it should be running at 1.67ghz,you've answered my initial query,I'm forever grateful
Thanks a lot guys

I've just gone and got myself a V5 5500 AGP card for £18 off ebay
To hell with the V3 :)
A happy bunny again :)

Here are a few pics of my retro rig, this is still work in progress,I need to add an Iomega zip drive,a cd-rw,a superfloppy drive,a sound card, wireless receiver, a couple of multicoloured led fans and generally tidy up the cables, probably go and get an AMD Duron 1400 for it as well etc
It's just been thrown together for the moment,to test out the V5 5500 AGP card I've just bought  :)
As you can see,she lives :D

It's an Asus A7V Mobo
1GB of PC133 sdram
Athlon 2000+ cpu (running at 1.25ghz  :( )
60GB Hard drive
Voodoo5 5500 AGP card
Jeantech light fusion case
Windows 98 and XP
Should be OK to play a few old classics on  ;D

sounds like a decent rig.  BTW, what is a superfloppydrive?  I've never heard of one before.

It's basically the same as a normal  floppy drive  ;),it uses 120MB discs rather than the 1.44 MB ones, though it can read the old 1.44 discs as well

Nice setup Leveller!
What information shows up on the front LCD display?

It gives the temperature readouts of the cpu, hard drive and case interior,it has 3 sensor cables inside to place on the components, quite nifty really  :)
It also has the time and date and alarm built in  :)

Don't bother with the ZIP drive - they suck donkey BO!!OCKS... ::)

Front USB would be more useful... :)
(I'm assuming the case has that already at the base though)

Also, LED fans eat lots of amps - be sure the PSU is beefy (or get dynamo fans, which power the LEDs from spinning power) ;)

I've already taken the zip drive out, decided against it,got a 400 watt psu for it,that should be enough I think :)
She's starting to take shape nicely, will have it done and dusted tomorrow, hopefully :D

Well she's all up and running now,I had to install windows 2000 instead of Win98,  as my 98 disk is knackered,an I don't have a copy of 95 either, everything is installed,I decided against the zip drive as it was a waste of time, I never had any disks for it anyway :)
The only thing I have to do now is change the cpu,I have an Athlon xp 1800+ in it atm,not the 2000+,I've got a Duron 1400 on order as I type  ;)
I've tidied the cables as much as I could, bit difficult with so many wires and sensors inside it
I have a couple of dvd roms in it,one which is a cd writer as well, they are hidden behind the 2 bottom opening plates,I tried to keep the front as uniform as possible, but I had to put the superfloppy in as I only had one of the smaller blanking plates,I suppose I could always spray it silver so it looks a bit more uniform :D
Anyway,here she is,the (almost) finished article  :)

Why a Duron 1400, it doesn't seem to be supported by your board? Try bios version 1.07 with your cpu's
Check the cpu numbers very carefully some are very similar between bus speed versions 266mhz and 333mhz ect

One of the guys on here Razrx I think it was, yeah, confirmed that this was the fastest my board could run,so I went with it,it initially had a Duron 1200 in it,which,I still have somewhere :)

Maybe you are looking for the Duron 1300? The 1400, 1600 and 1800 models are based on the Applebred-core which is basically a 130nm Thoroughbred-B core with disabled L2-cache. The Duron 1300 is the fastest 'old' Duron on 180nm with a Morgan core.

The Applebred-based CPU's have a 133MHz (DDR266) FSB and the Morgan's run with 100MHz (DDR200).

Have a look at this, has all the chip numbers as well.
Choose one and check elsewhere to confirm it works.

Oh buggar,so that means the Duron 1400 I just bought won't work with it then,BUT,the athlon xp 1800 I have in now will work at it's true speed if I update the BIOS :o

Only with pcb 1.05 according to the table, I expect the Duron might run but at a lower clock speed  :-/

Confusing as later revisions support a higher fsb.

I had the same problem determining whether i could stick my voodoo 3 into the agp slot on my a7a266.

I do have an Athlon not Duron 1200 that will go in  :D
I'll just use that, like I say,it's gonna be used to play old games on,thats it,I don't fancy trying to flash the BIOS in old machines either,I've done it on my main board (ASUS P5n32-sli),but that was dead simple,I wouldn't know DOS from BROS  ;D an I don't have a floppy disk
Thanks everyone on here for your help btw, much appreciated :)

I did my a7a266 using CD's, boot using win98se to DOS prompt with cd support. Then put in a cd with the flash tools and new bios on.

I've installed a few games on it,Unreal,wizards and warriors,Vampire Masquerade etc,all running sweet as a nut,happy as a happy thing now ;D
Cheers for all your help in this thread guys, appreciate it
