Title: Nvidia vs 3Dfx trial - not over!?
Post by elfuego on 24.03.07 at 11:25:40
It seems that the trial between the two competitors is still not yet over - the judge opened all the secret files and now - every detail is open to public. Well, the details are going to be open soon, as soon as Nvidia "experts" go through the case. The next few weeks could be very interesting!

" Creditors are suing graphics-chip maker Nvidia for money they believe they are owed as a result of Nvidia's purchase of nearly bankrupt 3dfx of San Jose in 2001.

The trial is expected to provide a behind-the-scenes look into a Silicon Valley merger of two fierce rivals in the competitive video gaming industry. Court proceedings also are expected to shed more light on Nvidia's accounting practices, which have come under scrutiny before. The company has had to restate earnings as a result of a Securities and Exchange Commission investigation in 2002 into its accounting practices and also as a result of the backdating of stock options granted to executives."

I hope 3dfx get's their Life back :)

3dfx Resurrection would still by our greatest dream, and let 3dfx take care of ATi, nVidia as Intel for once and for all, It's that I want the real King of 3D to come back :'( :'( :'( 3dfx Interactive didn't deserve to be captured by the enemy. >:(
Damn Nvidiots, stealing everything while they could. 3dfx is innocent for that Trial.

I'm just Pro 3dfx like every 3dfx fan is.

Well, technicaly there is no chance of resurection - but somebody will have to pay a "little" more then he already did ;) Nvidia will have problems if it's assets are to be shown in public, but only indirectly. ATI could profit out of this.

And Bill Gates might give away all his fortune to the sick and hungry children of Africa, let windows code be open to the public and live humbly and pennyless to the rest of his life.  ;D

This will prove interesting for sure but ultimately nothing will really come out of this. Nvidia might have to pay out a little more. I'd love nothing more then to see 3DFX come back alive but lets face it, miss management kind of lead to the down fall to begin with. 30,000 dollar trips and so on wasn't the smartest way to spend their money.

ööö... what's the subject of the trial. It' didn't lightened up for me from that link ???

IF 3dfx will rise again what should be do about SLI.
3dfx invented it and nVidia claimed it and has been used few years. should 3dfx take that brand name polluted by nVidia back or invent a new and more better name for 2 GPU prosessing?

I think 3dfx should invent a new name for voodoo 6 dual prosessing. like  NeMaSo (=new magical solution) :) :)

just Quad SLI trade marks as well NV nicked that form the Voodoo 5 6000 Quad SLi naming :') hahah oh deary.

Scan Line Interleave is and will always stay the true SLI, NV's way also has the three letters SLI but meaning a totally different thing lol aka Scalable Link Interface, heh well 3dfx Voodoo 5 series is far more scalable If you'd ask me ::)

3dfx used names the created them selves Nvidia wasn't smart enough to thnik of names and used the ones 3dfx have been using since they began with Quantum3D! So sad, just being to think in the head to think up a new name for their multi GPU setups, they should of called it SFR aka Split Frame Rendering and not SLI because it's isn't SLI, it just isn't.

He're some update on the situation:
http://www.siliconvalley.com/mld/siliconvalley/16974103.htm

"Jen-Hsun Huang, the chief executive of graphics-chip maker Nvidia, said in court testimony Friday he did not feel duped in his firm's 2001 acquisition of 3dfx, a struggling rival.

Huang testified on the third day of a trial in which Nvidia is being sued by creditors of 3dfx over how much Santa Clara-based Nvidia paid for the now bankrupt company.

Nvidia purchased 3dfx, the developer of the popular Voodoo graphics boards, for $70 million in cash and a promise of 1 million in stock if 3dfx met certain financial conditions, which it did not.

Creditors of 3dfx now claim the company was worth about $150 million. But Nvidia contends it overpaid for 3dfx, which it now estimates was worth about $15 million."

And it seems that there was another player in the game: VIA Tech!

"Lawyers for the creditors said Nvidia was in a bidding war for San Jose-based 3dfx with another chip maker, Via Technologies. Peter Bertrand, attorney for the creditors' trustee, said Nvidia did not make an offer to buy 3dfx but instead offered a strategic investment. Huang said he did not know how the competitive bid by Via was structured.

``I don't think it was in 3dfx management's best interest to tell me what Via was offering,'' Huang said. When asked if he felt he was ``duped'' by 3dfx management, Huang said no.

`I don't consider that we were duped. We offered a fair deal. And they accepted our deal and they seemed happy with it.'' "
