Title: UT2003 - what if?
Post by Paul Psomiadis on 01.11.02 at 21:18:39
Wouldn't it be great if the folks at Epicgames wrote us a GLiDE driver for UT2003... ;)

Ah, but they'd  say it was old tech. and there wasn't enough of a user base to warrant it! :'(

But...what if the 3Dfx users start a petition saying that they'd all be using a GLiDE driver, would Epicgames listen then? ???

Maybe? ::)

A better solution would probably be to hack the ORIGINAL glide driver for UT so it works with UT2003 (although it's probably not feasable!) :-/

Just thought I'd raise the issue! :P

Title: Buggy Quake 2
Post by Paul Psomiadis on 01.11.02 at 21:39:37
Just slightly off topic here...

I'm running two Creative Voodoo 2 cards in SLI on my system: -

Athlon XP1600+
256MB DDR
Kyro 2 64MB
SBPCI128
60GB Western Digital
Soltek SL75DRV-5 mobo

I'm using the DX7 'athlon hacked' drivers. (same results with the hacked DX6 drivers)

My problem is that I get weird 'every odd line is an off brown colour' glitches in Quake 2.

The odd thing is that GLiDE apps work fine, and Quake 1 also works fine?

Anyone had this problem before and know how to fix it?

Thanks...

Paul.

Hm, there are several reasons why this probably won't succeed :

- Glide API hasn't received any updates for a very long time, while OpenGL has reached V1.3 (V2.0 is coming), and Direct3D core has reached V8.1b, with DirectX9 coming as well.

- Creating/Bugfixing an Engine for Glide issues is close to impossible, because there is nobody left to talk to...

So that leaves this API unsupported, and old. Also the Userbase is shrinking every day, so doing anything like this would eat up Epic's manpower for trying to 'fix a dead horse' ::)

The old Glide Engine won't handle the extreme Triangle counts imposed by the new Engine. It would slow things down to a crawl  :-/
(the old Engine is known to have serious Problems with high Triangle counts, very inefficient at that)
-----------------------------

I'm sorry, but as of now, I can't think of any reason for your Graphical glitches in Quake 2...

I know the latest Versions were quite 3dNow!-Enhanced, maybe you're facing an incompatibility with the Athlon 3dNow!...

All I could say is try different MiniGL's, and also try non-3Dnow! rendering Modes (if available). Last resort, default OpenGL should work flawless as well.

Ya' I see yer' point about the old UT engine and GLiDE issues in general, it's a shame huh? :'(

Still, it 'would' be cool if someone came up with a way of doing it! ;D

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I doubt it's something to do with 3D-Now! as far as the GFX issues go, although I 'do ' admit that if you try and run the game in '3DFX-GL 3D-Now!' mode that it crashes, so maybe... ???

Oh, and I was using the 'default' GL setting and non-3D-now mode just to get it to work! (you only had to use 3Dfx-GL if you wanted to use the mini GL) :P

I 'do' have an idea though...WickedGL! I'll test it out and let ya' know! ;)

Hmm...an interesting read indeed! ;D

Question is...WHERE is this altered GLiDE release? ???

And how do we get our grubby mits on it? ???

If anyone knows WHERE this is, lemme know! :D

Ta' much...

Paul.

GRR, goddamn it, so who has the key to the honkin' drawer (SNORT!) ::)

Anyhow, about that Quake 2 'colour glitch'. I tried BOTH WickedGL AND MesaGL and neither of them solved the glitch problem! :'(

It's probbably a driver issue or something, just can't figure out WTF it could be? ???

Anyone got any helpful ideas? ???

I could send a reduced / JPEGged shot to you Falcon if this would help illustrate what I mean by 'brown lines every other line' (and cyan in certain cases).

It's really clearly vivible when compatred to a default GL shot like one from my Kyro 2! :o

Lemme know if this would help! :D

Hm, you can always send in an image...

It might help, although my hopes are slim. The error seems just.... too remote, and unknown so far  ::)

Ookay, I'm off to grab some screenies... ;D

I'll send one from KyroGL and one 3DfxGL for comparison... 8)

Should be easy to spot the error... :P
