Title: Voodoo 5 and diagonal lines on monitor
Post by bruter on 27.10.03 at 18:37:58
Hello, I have just joined your forum. I recently upgraded my Voodoo 3 for a Voodoo 5 5500 AGP. A few days ago light gray diagonal lines appeared on my monitor after a few hours of operation. There is also a wide horizontal band that scrolls down the screen as well. I suspect that the 5500 is responsible but maybe it's just a setting?

Any feedback on this issue would be greatly appreciated!  :)

The card is not overclocked to my knowledge. The person I purchased the card from also said that it was never overclocked.

Hm, if your Voodoo5 is a used, 2nd hand one, check that both fans are

a) still working and
b) that the Coolers beneath the Fans are clear of dust

When I cleaned my Voodoo5's, I found the Fans were working fine, but the amount of dust accumulated on the Coolers itself were decreasing the Cooling efficiency quite alot, making the Chips run very hot  :P

(The Fans can be easily taken off by removing the 4 little screws. That makes cleaning the Cooler itself very easy)

Great, thanks a bunch.  :D I will remove the card and check its cleanliness.

As for the "downclocking", how would I go about doing this. (Sorry, never touched those settings before!)

Well, I took the fans off and  :P, there was a lot of dust on the coolers. So, I cleaned the coolers and fans and I guess now we'll just wait and see. Thanks FalconFly!! :D

Win9x has the overclocking tab, you can download a small .exe that will enable it for you. 'overclock.exe'.

As patience is saying if the problem continues you'll need to clock below default, this will establish if there is a temperature issue or not.  Though usually overheating causes complete lock up and static vertical stipes or a freeze with looping sound in games, in my experience.  Your diagonal stipes with scrolling horizontal bar is a new one on me... hopefully someone else may have seen this symptom before.  Doesn't sound like a problem with the SDRAM either...

The driver I am using is the Amigamerlin V. 2.9 for Win 9x. I don't have the overclock tab.

You will find it here.  You can also adjust the clock from 3dfx tools with Amigamerlin 2.9.
