Title: Peltier coolers?
Post by gdonovan on 29.04.05 at 16:47:57
Anyone know a good place in the states to pick up a pair of peltier coolers?

I have an idea for a supercharged Voodoo Graphics board  ;D

already got one for my v3 3500, they have 2 sizes at the local frys( its like a giant best buy and electronics store in one) pretty cheap really, i thought they would be more.

have you ever used one?, my brother had one on his p3, this is my first shot at using one.

I see them on Ebay for $10 a pop, don't know if that is good or not.

Have not used one personaly, seen plenty of articles on them though.

I have a Voodoo Graphics that runs 65+ mhz with just a fan, I was to see just how far it can be pushed  ;D

I got mine for 19.99 new, not sure how long they last. im trying to find a heatsink big enough now to take away the peltier heat.

What's the speed of the RAM chips ?

110 mhz when were finished.

Ice cooling? No thanks.

Needs to be "plug and play" I.E. reasonable efforts to overclock.

i think the peltier is a good idea, just need to have a heatsink to make it worth it, now if you put a water block on your peltier i hear thats the way togo, only reason ive never tried it is v5's ram wont go over 200 stable for me, this v3 3500 with 5ns ram seems more interesting. that all said, what do you think is your limiting part, the ram or 3dfx chip? i think all the 3dfx chips could go higher its the cheap a$$ ram that holds them back.

In this case I think the stock ram hence it is getting swapped out for 110mhz stuff and then it's time to push the cores to the moon with the peltiers for cooling =)

ok, now gary how are you gona swap out this ram? ive got 4 5.5 chips and 4 more ill be in shape for my v5, are you gonna do this your self?

as for the peltier i wish i had some more experience, i was thinking before of getting a copper plate to cover 3dfx chips and ram all at once then putting a couple peltiers on that and then the heatsinks, that way id have a cold plate so to speak, not sure how it would work though :-/

when using a strong peltier do not forget to insulate the card or the card or mainboard will be damaged...

and you'll also need to do a voltmod, since better cooling doesnt always help!

but is there a Vmod available for a voodoo graphics ?

A local friend of mine does electronic work.

Early stuff is pretty easy to do as the pins are small in count and large in size, I don't think he can do the later stuff. :P

I like the idea of a copper plate, perhaps I'll obtain one to bridge the two chips and a single peltier unit in the center.

im thinkin i might be albe to soder it on but removal of the ram from the doner card scares me.

ya that was my v4 idea since all ram is on one side i was gonna get thin plates to raise ram up to 3dfx chip hieght and then copper plate over em all, i thought 2 big peltiers with cpu sinks on em would work, but then id need a support so it wouldnt rip out the agp slot lol.

well keep us up to date gary, good luck

::)

even thou i dont got a photo up here, this how i got it set up-->
peltier-->ice it,tec1-7103
heatsink-->coolmaster,nb chipset cooler(blue)
mainfan-->coolmaster, blue ice(blue led) on top
secodary fan-->original 3dfx(w/ logo) on side facing window

well here is my sample for my v5 5500 peltier(one of them, there is 2) runs very cool,  the blue plastic top right is shrinkwrap for the wires(no hairdryer, need to barrow one)  the clear fan has blue led and pushes twice the air as the 3dfx one so up top it went, the 3dfx one works well where it is pushing the air out the back of heatsink and it faces my case window  ;)

another peltier heatsink for v5, this one works very well because of size of heatsink.

I watercooled my Voodoo 2 cards, which completely solved any heat problems.

If you want to use a peltier, then watercooling is the way to go.
That way you can make the heatsink as large as you like, and place it outside of the case, which is the best place for it.

In my computer the processor, chipset, AGP graphics card, mobo power regulators and afore mentioned Voodoos are all water cooled.

My processors temperature monitor never registers more than 10-15 degres C above ambient, and the radiator is passively cooled.

The noisiest thing in my computer is the Antec 480W truepower 'so called' silent power supply (huh!).

That's getting watercooled soon, aswell!

I wish to keep it simple, this is for a one shot overclock and I do not wish to complicate needlessly.

A single Peltier will do without breaking a sweat for a pair of overclocked Voodoo Grpahics chips.

with just that little heatsink the peltier feels like a can of soda outta the fridge, plenty cold for a voodoo card

hehe i also got new stuff at home  ;D

lets se what we can chill with that:

no problem, its only -20°C
you can touch it for a long time and won't get hurt...
but i would not attach it on my skin ^^
