Console questions (playstation 2 games, emulators?)
07.02.09 at 17:41:04

I'm working on a section of the website the will have a listing of 3dfx arcade games that have been ported over to consoles or PC hardware.

A good example would be Midways "Thunder" series like Hyrdo Thunder and Arctic Thunder.

My question is this- Is there anyway to improve the Playstation 2's graphics? I tried setting textures to "smooth" but it looks like garbage compared to the original 3dfx hardware.

Hydro Thunder under PS2 looks poor too, the PC version on the other hand looks sweet since you can crank the AA to x16 with full filtering.

Anyone have experiance running Gamecube games on a Wii? Can you adjust any graphics options to take advantage of the newer hardware?

I don't think you can improve the graphics on a Playstation2.

The reason why you can adjust graphic options in most PC games is because the hardware is not fixed. It can be low-end or high-end and anything in between. The Playstation 2 on the other hand has fixed hardware.

As for improving graphics of Gamecube games on the Wii, I don't think it's possible. From what I understand, most of those games are just ports from the GC to the Wii without any improvements.

I should note that I do not own a Playstation2 or Wii so this should be considered as pure speculation.

There is a filtering option, didn't seem to do much.

I know there is a number of people who mod the PS2, I was wondering if any had insights as to what the console is capable of.

Or if there was a good PS2 emulator so I could run the game on a PC and simply adjust grahics options on the PC end.

Pity Midway did not make a PC port of Arctic Thunder!

The irony is it was developed and runs on PC hardware!

With all the emulators floating around, isn't there an arcade-machine emulator?

Yes and no- There are some emulators that will play some 3dfx based arcade games but they run at about 1 FPS since they are 2D based software engines and use no 3D features of modern hardware.

I tried running MACE (voodoo graphics based) on my 9800Pro machine and it was a slideshow.

i only know bleem, a PS1 emulator

also a console is complete different to a PC
a console is only used for games, the PC must do anything

the PS1 have only 33MHz
for same graphics on a PC you need a PII and a 3D Card
and for 800x600pixel even more

@Gary - P.M. me if you want specific infos about the PS2 (modding, etc...)
as I have extensive console knowledge...

As for Emulators - the only PS2 Emulator that's ANY good at the moment is PCSX2.

But...

1) You need a REDICULOUSLY fast system to get anywhere NEAR 60fps.
[you would have to have bleeding edge hardware]

2) You need to have a REAL PS2 to get a BIOS dump to use with the emulator...which would mean your PS2 would need to be chipped.

The only REAL way to improve visuals on a PS2 is (for PS2 games only) to use a component cable - then get either a game that supports progressive scan, or a patch to PUT the game into progressive scan.

BTW - Since Hydro Thunder is a PSX game (not a PS2 game) then you can use a PSX emulator for PC.

The best one around is ePSXe, which should run fine on any modern PC [also requires a PSX BIOS dump - just use Google to find one]

Have the PS2 version of Hydro Thunder and the PC version which blows it out the water.

The PC version is a nice 65mb package.

yes,you need a fast system, but I wouldnt go as far as sayig it has to be ridiculously fast-a dualcore cpu with frequency around 3GHz and a decent graphics card will do nicely,if the game is fully supported.in fact, many "lighter" (final fantasy X) games run decently even on my secondary machine (x2 4400 running at 2.2GHz with radeon x1950pro).and the iq is superb,if you run it in hi res and crank up AA nad FSAA Cool

FF12 running in hi-quality mode (there is no way a 4400 can run this fast enough,at least not now):
...

same screen,FSAA and AA off:
...

btw,PCSX2=pc stresstest extreme,if you need to kick the cr@p out of both cores to see if your cooling can handle it,there is nothing better than few rounds of FF12 Grin

note: pcsx2 does not run ps1 games-you should use epsxe for that (as already mentioned),it can improve the graphics quite a bit as well,if you play a bit with the graphics settings..

According to the Gamecube -> Wii Question:

It's not possible. As soon as you put a GC Game into the Wii, the GPU clocks down and you're getting the same visuals as on the Cube. No way to change it afaik.
I'm going to get a Component Cable for the Wii in a few days and I will look if the visuals improve when using it playing GC games on the Wii, but I frankly don't believe it.

Actually, this is correct - but it depends entirely on WHAT game you are running... Wink

...some games are emulated better than others in PCSX2. Smiley

FFXII is one of the better ones... Cool

BTW - I also have an Athlon 64 X2 4400+ and I'm using a Radeon 3870 X2...some games run fast...others slower... Wink
