Voodoo 3 2000 PCI /Windows ME questions....
27.03.08 at 03:50:41

I am considering an upgrade to Windows ME....wether that is a good thing from Win98se or not is another thing but....what drivers would be good for my Voodoo 3 2000 PCI 16 meg card?  There are only win98, win2k and win xp sections for windows products; what section would be right and what drivers do you reccomend?  Any help is appreciated, even upgrades for ME.

I don't have it yet, so I am not doing this right away, but I would like to be prepared ahead of time.  Thanks.

Many would protest that "upgrading" to ME is more like "downgrading" from anything Wink  I myself, cannot speak, because I have never used ME.  To my knowledge however, 9x/NT drivers should work with ME.  But will they work for YOU is the quesetion.  Grin

I will have ME pretty soon and will play with it over the weekend... then I will be able to confirm the whole driver situation.

GAR!

That's what I was thinking; I can get the cd from my brother, he doesn't use it, he has his own win98se, and XP discs too;  he probably would give the ME disc to me outright, but he said it is far more "buggy" than win98 or win98se was, so that scared me away from it, but....if there are sufficient upgrade packs, and/or service packs, maybe it'd be ok-ish........maybe.

I would avoid ME, I have heard nothing good about it.

There is a ME disc in the draw here, I used it once.

ME caused lots of trouble here some years ago. Never had a system that unstable. In my opinion Win98SE along with the unofficial service pack is the better solution ( Get it here : http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html ).

ME = Mistake Edition.

It's kind of like what Vista is to XP. Just stay away from it.

Ok, here is the story... I have a spare system that is dual booting 98se and xp pro.  98se is fat32 and xp pro is ntfs.  I just wanted to overwrite my 98se partition/installation with ME.   Needless to say I litterally laughed out loud when I got these two messages.

...

...

Don't know why it was so funny to ME... but I ended up reformatting the 98se partition and installing ME. hah  Cheesy

So did it work in the end?

And I've gotten that last error just trying to reinstall Win98se....why I don't know....all I did was delete the Windows directory that time and reinstall, fixed the problem.....

Lemme know how it goes

Everything worked perfectly.  after putting in the disk, run fdisk, format, and then type setup at the prompt, and let her buck.

I didnt get to installing any drivers or playing with it too much, but it looked like everything was ok.... After installing ME I messed up my MBR.  Then I got pissed and wiped the whole harddrive.  Maybe I will install it on my 3dfx gaming rig sometime (after ghosting my current dualboot setup that is).

Note if you are going to dual boot anything... create the partitions (ME has to be FAT32), and then install the older operating system first.  Just so I can say I did.. I might make my next installed a QUAD-boot.  98se/2kpro/ME/xp   Cheesy

I probably won't have to bother with Fdisk...already got 98se going....can I just install ME over it, like an upgrade?  All my drives user Fat32, so that should be ok.

I'd probably Fdisk and reformat it anyway just for a clean install. With ME being as picky as it is, I would just start fresh and that way rule out any previous OS install being an issue when it decides it wants to crash on you.

Once you format, a rule of thumb that I've also gone by is after a format, reboot, go back into dos off the boot disk, get a C:\ prompt, do a md win98 or win9x if I remember right for ME and then copy the win98 or what ever folder over (copy d:\win98 c:\win98). Once that's done, change directory to c:\win98 and run setup from there, not the CD. For one, it's a much faster install, for two you don't have to dig out the CD any time you need to change network settings or drivers of some type.

WAY easier then having to dig out the CD each time.

Well one reason I might choose not to Fdisk and all is I only boot to Win98se; no dual boot, so only the main partition to worry about.  Also, I actually boot from my Win98se cd due to some wierd setup I came up with; I have 3 hd's and C drive alwyas seems to get data corruption that scandisk has to fix when it hangs abruptly due to a windows crash, well not always but occasionally, so I have win98se on my d drive (second hd).  I want to keep the shit on my current drives; I could theoretically come up with about 700 megs on c for stuff, but meh.  I'd try either an upgrade install or a wipe of the windows directory then a install of ME.
