Title: the 3dfx VoodooMAC 5500 Prototype!
Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 26.07.06 at 11:03:19
Hi all finally another prototype has entered my territory and it was a hard one to tinker with but thanx to Gary we got out of it finally after 4hours of tinkering hehe, yeah Gary time flies hehe.

we gave WinXP Pro and 2K Pro a shot at flashing but no success there, the PCI.exe program could not identify the card and the flash utillity thought it was a Banshee or V3!

so there were a few things I could do, which gary mentioned, put the card in another slot, give it another Molex connector but then the other common 5500 PCI should not work either with the old stuff, but I did put in in the 2K rig and the same there, Gary als mentioned that the NT OS thing is a problem at times so i did the following

Formatted the 2K test rig [AXP 2700+] that I used Fdisk to remove the NTFS partition and create a new MS-Dos 6.22 partition then put Win98SE on it to use the flash utillity and that worked on the fly!

the PCI.exe program cound verrify the 121a code in the verrification's list , I was told that 121a means that the card is a 3dfx card, line 7 of the verrification list said it was a 121a verrification so that looked alot better than in XP and 2K they reported that the card was unassigned! heh we thought we were a bit in trouble back then.

Anyways after flashing the card in 98SE all went well and it work's like a charm now:) Very Special Thanx to Gary  ;)

so here some pics of this unusual card hehe :)

so here comes where I ask others and myself things about.

first there are 3 sorts of DVI possibillities:

DVI-A --> Analog
DVI-D--> Digital
DVI-I--> Digital and Analog

so here comes my question about this after the flashing and all that has all succeded, so here it comes:

here a pic of both the X1900 XTX's DVI-I's and the VoodooMAC 5500's DVI-D and VGA, in the background hehe that's Emperoro Palpatine battle the 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 PCI Rev.A1 2900 HAHA 3dfx PWNed him ;D:
http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/d/14698-2/X1900+XTX+_amp_+VMAC+5500+Proto+outputs.JPG

Here the conevtional DVI-I which the XTX has:

but this onventional DVI-D is different to thte one found on the VMAC 5500 Proto:

look at this pic and the difference is very clear:

The VMAC has on the far right a single Hrizontal line which DVI-D also has and left to that 2 small vertical ones which DVI-A, DVI-D and DVI-I don't have, is that a MAC feature or  can I use a normal DVI-D cable to my upcom'n Siemens Viewscan W-19-1?

I'd like to know what Ineed so that I can use both the X1900XTX and VMAC 5500 Proto on one A-B switch.

May The Force be With You all,

cheers,

Jedi Master,
Obi-Wan Kenobi.

DVI-I was the successor to DVI-D if I recall correct.

yes it was like DVI-D was from DVI-A :) correct there but that isn't the problem, it's how the DVI-D of the VMAC looks different compared to a conventional DVI-D it's different, so dunno what cable I need to use on that MAC DVI-D and ATi DVI-I what is needed to use both on one cable for one screen?

okay the cards mounted on an A-B switch then :)

If I compare the standard DVI-D connector with the DVI-connector on the VoodooMAC 5500 PCI prototype there are only the two vertical lines which differ from the standard DVI-D connector. The vertical lines are only additional to the other pins, they don't replace any pins so every standard DVI-D-cable will fit.
I don't know how the DVI-connector of a production VoodooMAC 5500 PCI looks but I can check when I come home in about 6 hours.

just been playing UT 1999 with Operation Na Pali mod @ 1024 x 768 x16 in Glide FSAA x2 and x4 no problems encounted, man FSAA x4 runs nice on the X2 4400+ system :)  I know only one core is uitlized though eheh but looks like thet the VMAC 5500 Proto get's it's full room to use FSAA x4 fully :)

there we go made a few screen shots in FSAA x4 @ 1024 x 768 x16 in Glide I made the brightness alittle higher with IrFanView, dunno if there are other progs than can capture Glide & FSAA.

the one may seem brighter than the other I was just fiddeling with IrFanView to get it right the second pic does look better hehe, just to get the hang of it :)
