Title: ¿Where Can I to buy to VOODOO5 5000 AGP4X? Post by osckhar on 19.02.04 at 02:18:14
Hi at everybody ;D
I am really interested to buy a VOODOO5 5000 AGP4X, where Can I to find it? I know that on EBAY is very possible, but I am tired looking for it and I never I haven't see it! p.d. If somebody want to sell it, please contact with me! Thanks a lot from SPAIN 8) Oscar |

I'll be very surprised if you can find a V5000 on ebay..
Those are even more rare than V6000. You can get a V4500(agp4x) pretty cheap though, and you might get lucky like i have and buy a card with Hyundai ram, which will overclock upto 210mhz with stock cooling ^_^ |

From time to time an engineering sample pops up on ebay, the last one was a V5-5500 with DVI and AGP4x.
This was approx. a half year ago. So you see you need patience... Another chance is to read postings in 3dfx forums, if somebody want to sell parts of his collection. This is how I got my V5-5000 AGP4x from Ireland... |

Heheheh - we ALREADY have Patience! :D
She is a forum moderator! ;) So...what you REALLY need is TIME...LOL! ;D |

hey osckhar, you're simply interested in special releases, aren't you? so you don't mind but the voodoo5 agp4x isn't really faster than the voodoo5 agp2x...mhm, who cares? what about the voodoo5 with vsa-101 chips & ddr-ram, isn't it also the agp4x release? or another side release? ;D

Hi,
I have seen the Rolol01 test (Hola my friend), and the performance is the same between v5 5500 AGP2x vs V5 5000 AGP4x. But the v5 5000 is really interesting because you can use a NEW MOTHERBOARD, but I know that It hasn't AGP TEXTURING too. But must be funny to see the general performance of the la v5 5000 AGP4X on ABIT&CPU 3000GHz BUS 800... :o Thanks a lot Oscar |

Even though this rare Voodoo5 5500 AGP is a AGP4X, is it likely that it will still have to run on a 3.3v Universal AGP Slot?
I can't see the card being one of the more up to date AGP4X 1.5v cards. If it is a AGP4X 3.3v, you can forget having a new motherboard as the hightest to support the 3.3v Universal AGP Slot will be a KT333 chip-based motherboard. On the other hand, if it is a 1.5v card, good luck to you and have fun upgrading! ;) |

janksjaer, I think you misunderstand the signifigance of such card. A V5 will run at 4x in an AGP Universal 2.0 slot supporting that, but there is no performance increase due to the lack of the ability of the card to take advantage of the increased transfer rate. The AGP 4x V5 of which osckar speaks has two notches cut in the PCB, so it can fit in and support the voltage in newer motherboards.

This has been explained countless times by hundreds of people over several 3dfx messageboards...
The Voodoo5 will not run at 4x AGP or even 2x AGP. It won't happen. The only advantage to a 1.5V/3.3V AGP Universal edge connection on such a card, is 1.5V slot compatibility for newer motherboards. AGP texturing or not, it doesn't matter, the card is a PCI66 device. In order to run dual or quad clocked it would need the AGP bridge controller that the V5 6000 has. The lack of this is the very reason why 3dfx opted for the 3.3v PCB. They knew the card wasn't true AGP and wouldn't run in 2x or 4x anyway. |

Does that mean the V5 6k is AGP 4x compatible (not voltage-wise)? |

yep, but i bet even this card wasn't able to use agp texturing. it was more that kind of voodoo4-agp4x capability with -like beta said- a faster slot. |
Title: Re: ¿Where Can I to buy to VOODOO5 5000 AGP4X? Post by beta on 22.02.04 at 21:32:31
The 6K should be able to run at whatever AGP rate the PCB dictates, due to the bridge controller. In it's 3.3V AGP 1.0 form: 2X AGP, with a 1.5V3.3V AGP Universal 2.0 edge connection PCB; 4X AGP.
Signalling Voltage, AGP Texture Accelleration and AGP transfer rate are three different factors. 4X AGP is dependent on 1.5V signalling. Execute mode simply isn't built into 3dfx cards so you're never going to see any kind of Texture Accelleration. You won't get a 'fast slot' with a 5500, you will simply get 1.5V signalling compatibility. 2X and 4X AGP transfer rates are simply unobtainable on a Voodoo5 5500. |

So what you're telling us beta, is that the V5 AGP is still just a V5 PCI adapted to fit an AGP slot? And that it doesn't take any advantage of the extra features of AGP like another AGP supported card would (e.g GeForce2 Pro DDR AGP 4X, mine :P)?

The card is basically a PCI66 device because it has two chips and lacks the AGP bridge controller necessary for 2x/4x operation. All 3dfx Voodoo AGP cards are all natively PCI. Without Texture Accelleration these cards are not true AGP. AGP Texturing or the 2x/4x/8x transfer rates are not such a great thing anyway. More of a marketing ploy than anything else, in the whole: "...big numbers pleae little minds..." scheme of things. |

Yep, all 3dfx AGP Cards would greatly benefit from AGP Texturing (just remember all the GTA3 problems due to the 16MB limit of a Voodoo3).
...and such Problems will just get worse, as the Banshee's and Voodoo3's 16MB are getting a severe Bottleneck more and more. Anytime a Voodoo3/4/5 has to swap Textures via the classic, slow PCI variant (some Drivers contain this feature, but not all), the framerates take a massive dump (sheer unplayable), whereas 2x/4x AGP would allow direct access to the AGP Texure Memory (or permit direct Texture Manipulation) at higher speeds. Even modern Cards can exceed their local Video Memory by a fair margin (e.g. high FSAA used in conjunction with large Texture amounts), and AGP Texturing just helps making the swapping at least as fast as possible. That's still significantly slower than local Video RAM, but at least alot faster then via PCI66. I'd say, 4x AGP in hard situations (e.g. 32MB total used, but only 16MB local Video RAM available) would make the difference between 0.5fps and ~10fps (depending on amount of Multitexturing, Bumpmapping or other Texture Manipulation involved). Not much, but better than nothing. In the past, 16 or 32MB local Video RAM was more than enough (and at the same time, 1x or even 2x/4x AGP was a practical joke due to insufficient System RAM bandwidth), but these times are about over :-/ |

er, i replied to amp_man's question concerning a voodoo5 6000 anyway, what about sideband adressing? this isn't that great thing, but as i know, at least the vsa-100 can handle it and fastens the bus a bit. concerning that, is the agp2x able to handle 32 sidebands? or just 16? I'm asking because v.control jumps from 16 to 32 when editing the default setting using a voodoo5 5500.. |
