Title: My 3dfx Website Post by rottentreats on 16.03.08 at 17:21:09
Hello Everyone,
I am in the process of making a 3dfx website of my own. I am posting this now mainly to hopefully get some input before I get too deep in the project. Please feel free to give me ideas, hints, suggestions, etc. Maybe I will even get some constructive criticism.. ;) As you will see, it is not very far along, and I am not that good with HTML. ( I had to remove all frames from the site so that it would not be filled with ads/banners ) So let me know what you think. Thanks!! [Click the image below] http://rottens3dfxasylum2.angelfire.com |

@rottentreats - can you add a 'normal' URL to your post... ;)
Zonealarm blocks the image! ::) |

Sorry about not adding just the url, seemed to slip my mind ::)
I will be taking pictures very soon and uploading them tonight. Right now I just am getting the layout of the site ready and testing functionality. I think I will be adding a few links also, such as an "about me", and one for "my 3dfx gaming rig". Not sure what else I would be missing... I really am open for ideas if anyone has any... EDIT: camera died and GF is being needy... :( I guess this will have to finish it later :( |

Hm, from personal experience, a few advices - or basically questions you'll have to answer for yourself :
- What shall be the goal of your Site ? This can be Drivers, Support (HowTo's, in-depth information, Detail Hints and Tricks, special subjects), Image Galleries, Patches or something else. It will also define what audence is targeted, shall it be special insights not covered anywhere else or Information not found anymore elsewhere, or rather "mass media" for a broad audience. Depending on how big this is supposed to get, Tripod (or any other Freehost) often turns out insufficient quite fast (traffic limits, filesize limits, Quality of Service etc.). A Dedicated Site with your own domain is usually the only solution in the long run. Depending on how defined the content of the site it, will also result in a corresponding amount of visitors. I've seen many generic, small Sites that came and vanished, because they didn't offer anything that wasn't already available on the established, bigger Sites - these just draw most visitors to themself. In the long run, any Site can only become successful by Quality, offering something that isn't available elsewhere. Finding the proper anwers to these comments should save you from investing alot of work, which results (worst case) may turn out to be disappointing. --------------- IMHO, the perfect 3dfx Site has a bit of everyhing : - Downloads - Images - Galleries with narrative/explanatory Text - Historical and Tech Data - Modern Layout and Navigation You'll quickly find that all established Sites have some of all above, but still lack something. "Filling the gaps" is usually a good start and a solid way to achieve visitor counts. |

Thanks for the advice FalconFly. For now, I think my site is mainly going to be used to display my collection. ( I don't plan on heavy traffic or anything.. dont even have any metadata) Maybe in the future I will host some downloads/files, or even have tutorials/etc.
Speaking of which, I have now updated the "Boxes & Cards" section along with the "Quantum3D" section. I still have a lot of work to do, and I am still getting use to doing all of this work. ( it is actually time consuming :o ) I was wondering if you guys could tell me how the speeds are... As far as pages/images loading goes. I am using ImageShack for image hosting, and it seems fast on my end.. but it might not be elsewhere.. Questions/Comments are still accepted. ;) http://rottens3dfxasylum.tripod.com |
Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by jandarsun8 on 17.03.08 at 19:19:52
Looks good so far but I would really look at Falcon's suggestion. There's hosting sites out there that are cheap. I'm using Parcom.net for hosting my own site and it's 11.99 every three months with 3 gigs of space, 300 gig's bandwidth usage each month, 1000 email address's. Not a bad price for 4$ month. 9.99 for a domain name for the year and it's all actually not that much considering the headaches that you won't have with having a free site.

Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by rottentreats on 17.03.08 at 19:48:02
Thanks for the feedback guys. After thinking about what I want to accomplish, and who my targeted audience is, I think I am just going to use the site to display my collection.
So that will be my little place on the web where I can put pictures of my 3dfx things. (kind of like exxe's site) Maybe someday it will evolve into tuts/downloads, but for now I think tripod/imageshack will do. Free is always good, and there is enough functionality there... its just html. Update: The site is now completely up to date with everything I have. There are a few things being shipped and I will put them on the site when they arrive. |

So... I have figured something out over the last few months...
3dfx >= Cocaine [not that I would know what cocaine is like...] :o I don't jump on every 3dfx thing I find... but sometimes I feel as if I do not have any control over it. Last night I bought a box, and then I told the seller that I was a collector. Then he told me he had a few more 3dfx boxes/cards in mint condtion. 5 minutes later I had 3 boxes/cards being shipped my way... And now this morning, I just won another auction... it's kind of funny how fast $250 can disapear :D Some people call me crazy, and you know what, I LIKE IT! BTW: I put some background music on the "Enter" (index.html) portion of my website. No one will probably listen to it... but its there if you want to give your ears a listen :) rotten ***EDIT*** - I just updated the site with a few pics of my latest piece, my Voodoo4 4500 PCI with BOX!!! ;D It is in awesome condition is has helped me get one step closer to completing my collection :) BTW: How rare is a US VoodooMAC 4500 PCI Box/Card?? I don't think I have ever seen one... |

Ok Guys... Got a few questions for ya... I received a few boxes today, and there were some oddities...
First: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=140217832581 Click link below if image is loading too slow - http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/8593/56486699uh3.jpg This is a factory sealed blue V3 3000 AGP!! What is up with that? Also, you will notice that "3000" and the "x" are not orange, like they should be, but white! (It is the box on the bottom obviously, I put the one on top so color could be compared) Don't know what to say or think about that... -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Second: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=150225156528 This is a brand new card suposibly, but one of the little thingys was broken off.. The seller put the card in the plastic insert upside down and backwards, it wall all messed up. If you see the picture below can you tell me if I should soldering the little thingy back onto the board in the location where it appears to have broken off? Is the card functional like this? [ don't want to test it and maybe fry it or something ] Any help would be greatly appreciated. (Box pictured above, the top one) Click link below if image is loading too slow - http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/9805/35129499kd5.jpg thanks guys, rotten |
Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by gdonovan on 27.03.08 at 23:40:40
1) Cool box! That is odd! How unique!
2) It will run without it (I have a test board with all of them busted off) and it is easy to reattached if you are inclined to do so. |
Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by paulpsomiadis on 28.03.08 at 05:14:37
Sure it will run without it...
But for electrical safety purposes, it's better to reattach it. Remeber it's an electrolytic capacitor - so be sure to get it the correct way round or it will POP! (from what I can see, just match the shape to the silkscreen on the board. Also, all electrolytic caps have the negative end marked) |
Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by rottentreats on 28.03.08 at 05:28:46
Ok, so just solder the capacitor on the same way as the other caps on the card? with the text upside down? Silkscreen?
Wont be able to do it for a few days - just bought the iron a few minutes ago :) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=250229403139 |

Long term stability issue I think, nothing bad will happen if it is missing. |
Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by paulpsomiadis on 29.03.08 at 07:04:20
Silkscreen = this is the white marking for each component on the board.
It denotes the size, shape and orientation of each component. |

Your technique needs a little work... :P :-/
You can test if it's making contact by using the "continuity" setting on a multimeter. ;) |

5$ for a PCI V5 5500 MAC with DVI and VGA ? :o I'm starting to hate my country even more, here people would ask like 200$ for something like that and we are paid way less then in Germany or USA.
Anyway, congrats on your new card and good luck with your site. |
Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by sigtau on 06.04.08 at 19:24:54
That sure looks like a Craig's List posting. Oops, the secret is out ;)
But seriously, you got an awesome deal. There's a "regular" PCI 5500 card on ebay right now going for $167. Just plain crazy......or more money than sense :P I guess there's more collectors for 3dfx stuff these days. Luckily, I have a nice stockpile of 5500s and V2s to last me until I'm old and gray. Ken |

Hello again guys, I just won the auction below and now I have a few questions. Does anyone have a power supply for this thing that they are willing to sell? or maybe know someone that does or where I can get one? Also, can it be used in any motherboard or does it need to be somethine specific? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

every buy a aalchemy and dont have a PSU some time ago someone try to sell one on ebay for 100 or 200$ starting bid |
Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by rottentreats on 23.04.08 at 20:00:16
When I get the PSU I probably wouldn't use it very often if at all. Just bought it to add to my collection. Plus, to my knowledge, I got a fairly good deal on the board. So I guess I will keep my eyes open for the PSU. :)

Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by sigtau on 24.04.08 at 15:14:30
First of all, congrats on the purchase. I hope it's a good board that will work once you get everything you need.
I took the plunge and transplanted a Soyo P4S Dragon Ultra motherboard into my Aalchemy 8232 system. It originally came with a dual P3 1 ghz CPU/MOBO setup, which is too slow for the Aalchemy card. I'm now running a P4 2.8 ghz in it. I also went ahead dropped in my Abit Geforce 4 Ti4600 card as the primary video. It wasn't just a straight up swap. I had to get extensions for the ATX power, 4-pin CPU power, and front panel LEDs/power button (total cost of $20 from Frys). I also had to re-arrange the mobo stand-offs. In the end, I gritted my teeth and flipped the switch. The dang thing was recognized by W2K (I used a fresh OS install on a spare HD) and I was up and running in no time. With the more powerful P4 CPU setup, I saw a significant increase in performance in non-AA mode. I did see a slight improvement with 4X AA, nothing much with 8X AA. I still need to do more testing so I can compare it with my pre-upgrade benchmarks. |
Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by RaverX on 30.04.08 at 07:02:21
My guess is that it's a "typo", it should be 9939. Why don't you put full pictures with the back and front of the card, maybe we cand see something.
|
Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by TM30 on 30.04.08 at 18:00:55
its one of the first V3 3000 AGP (0999 PCB date is really really early!) ... early V3 2000 AGP also had this locking AGP thingy...
yours seems to be a production one (CE sticker) but that white stamp on the back... hmmm, other production V3 3000 AGP cards doesnt have it... take off the cooler and you will see that it has the old 3dfx logo with the "tripple 3".... |

does anybody know what that number means on the AGP thingy.
I do have cards with numers from 1 to 4. ( all REV. C ) |
Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by rottentreats on 01.05.08 at 12:17:39
Thanks for the information guys! ( When/if I sell the card, I will let you know first exxe )
So is the pcb date on the back a typo? It clearly says 0939. Or was that a different "dating convention" compared to other cards? **Update** I have updated my website (mostly) to everything I have to date. There are still a few additions to be made, but overall I would say 95% of the things I have are up. (click my sig or pcb date above to visit my site ) Oh yeah, heres the link to the auction from where the card came - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250237635407 |
Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by FalconFly on 01.05.08 at 12:49:40
The CWYY infrequently changed and the numbers got swapped indeed.
Before 2001, that's wasn't a big problem though, but seeing something like 0102 makes it kinda difficult to identify the exact date. |

Disregard my last post on this topic... I was just pullin chains :D
My question now is how much memory does the MSI MS6168 version 2 motherboard support? I want to max that thing out. I read somewhere that it is 256... (didn't say if that was total or per slot) So with that being said would my best option be two sticks of 128MB PC100? Also, I was wondering what the fastest CPU support is... Any help would be appreciated :) /EDIT - a little more reading and another source says that it supports a max of 512MB.. can someone please confirm, I need to order some ram for this bad boy :) |
Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by ps47 on 10.07.08 at 08:46:12
confirming 512MB,but make sure to use two 256MB 16-chip modules.as for the CPU,p3 800 100FSB is the fastest thing officially supported.you can get 133FSB support by flashing a special BIOS,but I wouldnt recommend it,too many boards have died after some time when operating in the 133FSB mode..

Hello Everyone,
Right now I am asking for pure opinions, please give me you answer and back it up with reasons. I have recently purchased a Thermaltake Golden Orb HSF for slot1 processors. - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=380045516449 Now my question is what processor should I use in my 3dfx gaming rig - http://rottens3dfxasylum.tripod.com/rig.html I have two choices in hand. the 866/133, or 1000/133. I know a lot of people like speed, but I was also told that the 866 was a great "vintage gaming" proc, and it would give it more of a vintage feel. (ie: load times) So please let me know which you think would be better in this application. (please also review the specs of my system and look at possible bottlenecks) I could obviously do some benchmarking (which I probably will) but I would just like to hear some opinions. Thanks people :) |

Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by NitroX infinity on 20.08.08 at 00:59:12
The general rule is; 4 chips on the back is an 8MiB card (16 chips total) and 12 chips on the back is a 12MiB card (24 chips total).
Voodoo 2's usually use 512KiB chips. But your first one seems special. It either has 12 1MiB chips (most likely) or 8 512KiB + 4 1MiB chips. I'm willing to bet it's a 12MiB card so you can run them together. |
Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by rottentreats on 20.08.08 at 01:07:14
Ok, that's what I figured.
The first card is a 12mb Voodoo2 straight out of the box. The second card is a 12mb BlackMagic Voodoo2. I just found it odd that both were 12mb, but one had less chips. You however gave me the information to understand this.. thank you. FYI - They DO work together in SLI. |
Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by G1nX on 20.08.08 at 02:08:59
The card with no chips on the back is a 3dfx (stb) V2 1000 being a later model the 1mb memory chips were available so they used those.
One interesting question arises what if you soldered on the back of 12 memory chips each 1mb in size. Would you end up with a functional 24mb V2 card? with two of these you would end-up with 48mb in sli :o |
Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by m14radu on 20.08.08 at 08:20:30
AFAIK the V2 supports only 12Mb of memory, and there is no card with more than 12Mb . ( not even a prototype ).
I have to check the V2 datasheet ! |

That's what I figured... but what's up with the holes in the PCB that are filled on his board? I'm just curious...

This is how a product with a PCB is usually made;
First you have the blank PCB, components are placed on it. But rather than soldering each component seperately, the PCB with it's components rolls over a bath of liquid tin (or whatever they use to soldier) and the backside slightly touches this liquid stuff. So any small holes on a pcb usually get filled up. So the question is not 'Why are the holes filled on your PCB' but rather 'Why aren't the holes filled on the other PCB' ;) |

Well, that is a good question! I got this card and a few others from an old arcade guru. He said the card was probably pulled from an arcade machine and could be special somehow. Probably not, but it's on eBay either way right now :) |

Slashdot - 3dfx' Voodoo5 6000 Still Alive:
Pretty interesting to read what people thought back then.... http://web.archive.org/web/20010729022650/slashdot.org/articles/00/09/06/1136247.shtml ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BTW - I found that article because google is awesome: "In honor of our 10th birthday, we've brought back our oldest available index. I have owned 6-7 boxed 3dfx Voodoo2 1000's in my life. I have never seen this sheet in any of them except for in one I just got. I could not see anything different.. anyone have any ideas what they were referring to as a "different look"?
|
Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by G1nX on 07.10.08 at 01:12:33
Well keeping in mind that before the V2 1000, 3dfx did not offer any products of their own only chips and some reference boards. So i guess this is the STB part saying that the Black Magic has a different look as a package and a different name to symbolize the merger.
Just my opinion on the matter. |

What is the best thermal adhesive for GPU heatsink application?
(namely for a vsa-100 chip on v4 & v5) Arctic Silver Premium Silver Thermal Adhesive? |

Thanks for the link razrx! That's what I have been seeing but I was unsure if that is what everyone else uses and whether or not it is the best for that kind of thing.
I will let you know how this stuff works :) - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360101835409 |

Well from my own experience i can say the stuff works very well as do most Artic Silver products. You just have to take into account the fact that the chemical reaction happens very fast 4min max so you also need to be fast and apply it before it's no longer putty. More useful info in the instructions manual. |

It's funny, how I keep the front page with the music open when I'm browsing, it's actually quite cool when the music starts, with all the game sounds in it. :)

Quick question: will Canopus Pure 3D II cards function ok without a fan? Or will they start on fire? I recently purchased 2 for a SLI setup and one of the cards does not have the fan...
|
Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by sigtau on 11.01.09 at 00:15:08
The Canopus V2s should be fine without the fans. However, they just don't look complete without them. It is possible to duplicate the original fans using parts from Digikey or Frys. When I scored my first SLI pair last year, one of the fans was shot. I ordered new Sunon fans from digikey. The trick is to find new connectors that match those that are on card. I couldn't find them anywhere, so I performed surgical to attached the connectors from the old fans to the new ones. Since you don't have any of the parts to attach the fan, you will need to get nylon spacers, nuts, and bolts. All can be found on the Digikey site pretty easily. With postage, you are probably looking at ~$15 to get the fan working.
The alternative cooling solution that is equally cool would be a pair of the special Tennmax V2 stealth coolers for the Canopus card. Good luck finding one of those in the wild. |

Nice vid.
What happened to your site? It says it's removed due to Terms of Service Violation? |

Or maybe another one bites the dust. Sad to see a voodoo 2 go bye bye from bad ram :'(. I have a voodoo rush and two voodoo 1s that have the same problem. |

Brendan, your site has been down for ages.
Did you lose interest or what happened? |
Title: Re: My 3dfx Website Post by rottentreats on 08.04.09 at 20:12:10
It's actually due for a revamping and was taken down. In the next month or so I will be taking all new pics and updating somethings. (plus I have some important stuff to add)
With that being said, I had some backups of the site, so I took 5 minutes and re-uploaded them. It can now be accessed at: http://rottens3dfxasylum2.angelfire.com/ That will be down in about a month when the new site/domain is up. :) |

FWIW, on the Box & Card page you have Click To Enlarge hyperlinks standing alone in some of your rows that go nowhere.
