Title: better 2D on V4 or V5?
Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 19.10.05 at 22:38:59
Hello all 3dfx people :)

not very long ago I read an article or a post about the 2D difference on a Voodoo4 based card and that of a Voodoo5.

What I read then that the 2D image quallity was somewhat sharper on the V4 than the V5, is this because of the V5's SLI connction?

Because I dunno why that should differ, since the Ramdacs are both 350Mhz.

So is there really a difference between these cards in 2D?

May The Force Be With You...Always,

Ben Kenobi.

Clever question, I'd like to know more about this too...

yeah I always have wondered about this, maybe someone might have an explanantion about this one , it would be great to know if there is a big difference anyways, might be that the Voodoo4 4200/45004800 have better mem timings or so or is it something else?

2D processing is the same on both cards. V5 uses only chip 0 to draw 2D.

The difference is the routing of RGB signals. RGB is dedicated route on V4 and it is wire ored on V5 (chip 0 and 1 have their RGB and sync signals connected together). That could introduce a bit of ghosting from unterminated reflections on the signals.

The other difference could be the choice of RGB filter. V5s have a Pi filter from muRata and that could have a lower cut off frequency then V4. Mainly, if the V4 came from another manufacturer, they would select descrete implementation of Pi filter with different characteristics. That would have the biggest impast on image quality.

Ah Thank you very much Hank for the explanation there, and welcome to FalconFly.de also ;) We all hope you enjoy your stay as well.
