Title: Various questions : need help for my 3dfx ring
Post by Narmounet on 13.12.10 at 10:52:39
Hi all !
Finally after years I've got some time for me and my 3dfx cards.
As you may know I want to do an exhaustive website site in french with history, download and benchs...
But we have still to learn, so I'm asking your help  :)

A) Hardware
I've got all 3dfx's commercial cards excepts the 4500MAC and a Banshee AGP SDRAM.
My 3dfx ring is this :
Asus TUSL2
384 MB PC133
PIII 800EB (looking for a Tualatin)
Seagate 60GB
Monitor : Samsung 2443 (up to 1920*1200)

I'm using Win98SE which I think is better for DOS Game ; if I got more time I'll try on XP...

I think I'll use my current CPU at different frequency : 400, 600 and 800 mhz. Do you think it is a good idea or just 400 and 800 mhz is enough ?

B) Drivers ?

I've got in my head to test for each generation a bunch of drivers.
For example for the VSA-100 I'll start with the first 3dfx drivers, then the last, then the last 3dfx, the last Amigamerlin, the Last Raziel.

But what about the OpenGL drivers, I'm a but confused : do theses package have an ICD and MiniGL drivers on each ?
I want to test the mini, ICD and the third party (Wicked, Mesa and Thunder GL)

C) Games

I've got a lot of games and demo. As I can't test all I'm thinking about a selection.

Glide Games :

- Quake II
- Speed Buster
- Unreal
- Unreal Tournament
- Carmageddon 2
- Rogue Squadron
- Deus EX

Open GL :

- Quake III
- Half Life
- Return To Castle Wolfenstein
- Homeworld
- Max Payne
- Doom 3

Direct 3D :

- 3D mark 99
- 3D mark 2000
- Tomb Raider 2
- Urban Chaos
- The nomad soul
- Motocross Madness 2
- UT 2004
Trackmania Nations

As you see, I think I don't have enough D3D and OGL games, have you some names easy to find and to bench ?

Have a nice day !

-no need to underclock the cpu.
-original 3dfx drivers support opengl via the 3dfx opengl icd.it is good for old opengl games, but newer ones may be buggy (or not run at all).
-3rdparty drivers can contain various opengl drivers, depends on the author.compatibility and speed varies as well.raziels driver is a bit slower, but supports dx8/9 games.
-there are two alternative opengl implementations that can help when the 3dfx icd is not enough-wickedgl (fast, but supports only selected games),and mesafx (slower, but supports everything that can be supported),see here.
-max payne is d3d.

- Perhaps I can hook you up with a Tualatin 1400-S 512K 133FSB CPU. I'll have to check.
- How much spare time do you have? I have 2500+ benchmark results in my database and filling this database with specs, information, photo's and benchmarks is a lot of work. Consider things like GHOST-images to create an Windows install (with games installed) but without 3dfx drivers to speed up the proces. After all it's best to keep your benchmark installation as clean as possible.
- Also write down the driver version from other components like motherboard chipset. Might come in handy for future references.
- Throw in some other cards (TNT2, GeForce 256, GeForce 2 series) with drivers from the same era as the 3dfx drivers for comparison.

If you need game ideas, Diablo 2 will run under both D3D and glide I believe, and if I remember correctly 4X4 Evo 1 runs under Glide, D3D and OGL.
