Title: Counter Strike + Voodoo3 + XP SP2
Post by Steed on 30.11.05 at 00:02:52
Hello,

I am having a problem launching CS 1.6 on Win XP SP2 and Voodoo3 2000. I have Amigasport 3.0 XP installed + 'Real' glide2x.dll (http://www.inc_exe.szm.sk/glide2x_v345.zip) in windows/system32 and opengl32.dll copied from WickedGL dir. When I launch the game, the desktop goes 640x480, I notice the CS picture, and then basically I get black screen (some desktop fragments are visible though, I can also restart/standby my pc) and the game does not run. Any ideas what could be the problem? ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

..last time I was running CS1.6/voodoo3/xp,I had no service packs, but this shouldnt be an issue.first, you should test your opengl (wickedgl) funcionality, preferably with some simple game like glquake (quake3 demo should be sufficient as well),place the wickedgl opengl32.dll to the game folder and try running the game.if it wont launch, you may have a driver problem.

..one more thing you can try, find the 3dfx opengl ICD (should be in your windows/system32 folder, filename is 3dfxICD.dll),copy it to your CS folder, rename it to opengl32.dll and try launching the game.the icd should work as well, although the image quality may be a little bit lower..

I have noticed that in your game guide (http://www.shifter.sk/helppage/guide.htm) it is said that WickedGL opengl32.dll should be put into windows/system32  while here (http://www.shifter.sk/helppage/default_fix.htm#gameguidetoc) it is said it should be copied to the game directory. Which is the right way?

Also in 3dfx Tools OpenGL/Glide settings I set Refresh OpenGL/Glide to 85 (I have 1024x768x16 set to 85hz via monitor settings) and I know Win XP limits OpenGL refresh to 60Hz. Could this be a problem?

Also I have pretty much all 3dfx Tools settings similar to those recommended in Best Settings section at 3dfxzone.it for Amigamerlin 2.9 (high quality setup). Is that ok? Maybe there are some settings of which I should not use certain values?

both ways should work (the second one forces wickedgl for all apps, maybe I should remove this)

conflicting refreshes could be a problem, try setting everything at 60Hz and see what happens..

alternatively, you could try uninstalling amigasport and installing SFFT,but this should be the last thing you try.have you tried placing the icd in the cs folder? have you tried running another opengl game?

I tried this and it launched the game well, thanks. BUT... I really don't want to use it. I want to use WickedGL.  As I explained before, I tried with WickedGL opengl32.dll in game dir, and it crashed. Could you recommend me what to do to make WickedGL available?

/scratches head/
the thing should just work, afaik.have you tried wickedgl functionality as I suggested (run glquake/quake2/quake3/whatever with wickedgl)?

I could plug in my v3 pci and try it myself, but one of the very few things I lost when my disk went down was the steam cache, and that means loads of downloading and other steam pain before being able to test..

No I didn't test wickedGL with other games, actually I don't see much point in doing that - even if it works there, that won't make it working with CS. I have now mesafx, and the game runs just as well as it did on win 98se. Regarding mesa btw... Is that ok to use your 'real' glide2x.dll with mesa's glide3x.dll in system32 dir? Currently it's the way I have it.

A pity WickedGL doesn't work... I was hoping to get a few fps more with it.

glide2x and glide3 dont have any conflicts, its up to the user to decide which versions of them is he going to use.make sure you have the last glide3x.dll (420kB) in your system32 folder if you are using mesafx.

I had terrible fps when using mesafx with halflife based games, icd was always faster..as for wickedgl,I think it would be useful to know if the problems are caused by wickedgl or by steam.

I cant get this one from my head,I think I'll get steam running in the next few days and check on this myself ;)

Would be nice if you posted the results after that, and maybe a solution to this as well (in case you find one) :)

Also, the latest glide3x I have is that of mesa 6.2.0.1 which is 450 560 bytes. The latest mesa 6.2.0.2 does not have a new glide3x, only opengl32.dll.

the latest glide3x for voodoo3/4/5 is in the root folder of mesafx 6.2.0.1 full package,or you can download it here.

I'll have a look at that wickedgl problem, probably sometime next week..

Did you check the wickedgl problem, ps47? Any luck with running CS with it?

it might be better to use the latest Sage 1.90 from dborca, unless it's impossible to converte CS_Source to OpenGL.  :-/

IMHO he should start with a normal WinXP Driver without any modifications or other hand-fed files (may also be an old one), just to get a safe start.

From there on, I'd start looking for more current and optimized stuff, otherwise Problems will be hard to nail down.

PS.
Am I wrong, or did CS 1.6 introduce some High-Res textures ?
Since I don't play CS, I'm not sure... But if so, it would explain the Problems.

Yes The Source Engine does have High res textures, and there have been bug fixxes for that part.

Highres textures would be the case cause they are in 2048 x 2048 format hehe a true no go for the Avenger hehe

as I said,I had CS1.6 up and running under xp with v2 SLI and v3 pci, runs fine with ICD and wickedgl..and no,I havent tried it with xpsp2 yet, every time I want to do it I remember what PAIN steam installs are,and loose interest suddenly :P

but I will try it out, eventually.I'll probably take a few day vacation, last few weeks have been stressfull.time to relax and do some fun stuff,I have two machines that need a fresh install of win,one hdd dying,a v5mac that still needs to be flashed to pc,and two rooms full of junk.ask me,its time for a vacation to fix it all up ;D
