Title: Win2K better than XP on Glide games? Post by chevy05 on 03.05.06 at 20:10:34
Have a Dell 8300 Dimension that has a 3Ghz Intel in it that I want to use for old games. I installed Windows ME on it and the games ran great with the 5500 PCI card, but USB 2.0 and other drivers are missing for ME, and ME needs to be reloaded about once a year due to software rust as it slowly deteriorates. I loaded XP Pro, but I could not find a set of drivers that worked good for my Nascar 3 and Rogue Squadron games. I tried almost everything on Falcon's server. I am now wondering if Win2K and 3Dfx's own WHQL driver would be best. I don't own a copy of Win2K, but I have heard that it is very stable and does not deteriorate like 98SE & ME. The PC will be used by my son for homework and surfing the internet and such. Our newer games will be played on our other PC with XP and an ATI X800 Pro. Bye the way, Glide Wrappers will not work with these games and the ATI cards.

A dual boot solutions may resolve your problem no?

I have done dual booting in the past, with bad results after a few months. Seemed as though the boot.ini file would become corrupted on me. Both with Microsoft's boot manager, and with System Commander. Kids could be part of the problem ;) My PC has the 875 chipset and it is not naturally supported by 98 or ME with drivers anyway. But your suggestion is definitely a good one for older PC's with hardware that is supported by 9X or ME with drivers. Thanks.

Well I don't know about Nascar 3, I've got Nascar 4 and that works fine with both 2K and XP but the Rogue Squadron games at least not the original Rogue Squadron will not work on NT based systems (IE. Windows 2K, or XP). I've tried, but it won't even do the install- comes up with an error stating that it won't install on NT based systems. I've set up a 98SE box for to play that (along with some other old games). Hope this helps out some in making a decision on what to do before you go through the trouble of getting Win 2K and finding out it doesn't work for you still.
