Title: mk4 (or older games in general)
Post by Pablo on 14.04.04 at 10:06:09
Hello,I have a new question:
is there a way to fool/cheat older games
that look for older drivers or cards?.
Mortal Kombat 4 doesn't support v3,it works
with a monster card, but it has only software and direct3d
avaiable with a v3.
It happened with resident evil too,I had to set it
to "rendition",and I hated that,but the games
uses direct3d anyway,I tryed it with the monster card
and even on 3dfx mode it was just direct3d and looked
the same,BUTit does matter in mk4 because,I dont' know if it's just me
or what,but,mk4 in direct3d mode doesn't look the same
it used to in glide
I tought that games like mk4 look for files
like the fxmemmap or the glide 1 dll or something
like that,so I placed all the monster drivers files
in the game's directory, but it still can't find glide.
The "limit memory" setting doesn't change the
way the game behaves,("glide card not found",grrr).
Every thing that uses glide is working,it's just that kind of older games that seems to
look for specific registry entries or something like that.
so,is there a way to fool that games?.

Well,it's working,with a third party glide dlls for v3
(the ones from the "voodoolizer 1.05" drivers set)
placed in the mk4 directory, the only side effect
is that I have to remember to switch to software
mode before quitting the game,or the display won't
be cleaned/refreshed.(the system stays operational
but with a black screen. I know it's operational
because in that case I have to do a "blind reboot"
by means of alt-f4. anyway,I doesn't happen if
I remember to switch to software mode before quitting).
I'll try with banshee dlls anyway.I already tryed with
the dlls from both the oldest and the latestt drivers,
but with the oldest dlls it does a "general protection bla bla"
crash, and with the latest it behaves like with the
v3 dlls.I'll download and test other versions just in case.

Nope, that dll behaved the same way: "glide card not found" :(
I'll keep trying with other versions of banshee dlls just to test it,
but the game is working with that third party one anyway.

Pabler, I don't know about MK4, but I do know that Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 for PC needs Vesa support. If your videocard does not have vesa support, then you will have trouble playing.

I do know of a Vesa fake/a vesa emulator. It's this one file you put in with your Mortal Kombat directory, and you can play. I'm sure I backed that file up. If you want it and still come back here to hopefully find that answer, give me a buzz  on aim: Lucidtomr
You can alternativly probably find the vesa patch on a p2p app.

I had absolutely no problems running mk4 on voodoo3/5.just make sure you use an original glide2x from 3dfx,not some lame wrapper.as for resident evil1,the game was coded for voodoo1,no surprise it has problems with voodoo3,the cards work a bit different (v3 not being an addon card etc).the rendition mode should work fine.
