Title: 2D in Windows on a Voodoo2. Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 21.05.06 at 23:02:47
Is this really possible, even on a single Display Monitor?
in someway it could be but if a GFX card has no bios how would it be possible then? anyways he did give this link though: http://www.video-drivers.com/drivers/121/121783.htm it says it does disable the 3D, but I don' see the point in that, unless it is possible in a way hehe :) |

There was a beta driver for Win2K that allowed a Voodoo 2 to be used for 2D and 3D... :P
...but it was buggy due to beta-ness...ah well! ::) |

Yep, the Win2k V1.00.00beta does that, but it was nothing more than a proof of concept.

Ah okay so it is is somewhat way possible, still odd that it is possible since that a Voodoo2 has no Bios. always had the idea that you need a bios to instruct your card for 2D stuff hehe kinda a crooked way of thinking haha dear dear. :-X ;D
would it work with a Voodoo Graphics as well? Since that a Voodoo Graphics is based on the same technology concept as the Voodoo2 right? |

Technically, yes (limited in resolution though), I guess noone ever experimented with that.

There is a Linux driver, that can do 2D on a VoodooČ too. It can do 1024x768 on a single card, no higher res on SLI (not supported). I never tried that however.
As far as i know, the BIOS is only needed for the card to POST and show basic 2D (POST screen, ASCII in general). When Linux for example boots up on a VoodooČ (graphics disabled up to that point), i guess it can detect the card and then begin to output its 2D stuff. |

In windows its achievable with voodoomage... wich is also unstable
In linux it just has to be used as a framebuffer device and it works out ok On a properly pre-setted configuration it can be even used as only graphics card in the box, experieced that personally... but still unpractical. More like a fun thing to do than anything else. ;) |
