VSA-100 A0 Revision: 100MHz
20.04.05 at 08:45:21

Just found this article which tells a nice story about the A0 revision of the VSA-100. Here's an excerpt:

Quote:
The Voodoo 5 above is based on the version A0 VSA-100 silicon, it still has some bugs in it and it can't run on the speed that it's supposed to do. The final Silicon (which is going into mass-production quite soon) will run on 166MHz compared to the 100 MHz A0 version that was presented to me.

Another nice bit of information just below that piece:

Quote:
Since we're on the subject power-consuming, I've been able to verify that the VSA-100 processor will take up about 15-17 WATT.

YAY! Learned two things already today and I've only been out of bed for like 1 hour Grin

lol that's not the first Voodoo5 board mate Smiley

That's nothing but a Voodoo5 5000 PCI Rev.A1 0900 Wink

The First Voodoo5 evermade was dated back to Rev.A0 4499, yes week 44 year 1999. that's this model:

...

The Dual head Voodoo5 5500 AGP it runs at 100Mhz cores/mem because 3dfx was afraid of burnouts and so on., normally there would be cool blocks on the VSA-100's.

1) Actually there was issues getting the boards to run in SLI mode, the slower clock speeds makes it a bit easier to sync the chips.

2) Most proto cards do not come with heatsinks as they get in the way during frequent rework in the lab, they used temporary heatspreaders that were easy to remove during debugging.

Yes, I have seen a bunch of early protos running a "6000" bios, and these were all lab cards. I think that bios was just the most refined hence the most used.

Have not tried & would not waste my time- The latest 6000 bios is 1.16 or 1.18 and most of the early bios are .27 & .31.

No sense going back.

I have 1.18 on my Rev.A 2500 Voodoo5 5500 AGP, I suppose it would be the latest bios for all Voodoo5 cards, unless there is a 1.19.

my Rev.A 2300 had Bios 1.06 which is seen on many older 5500's. I also see that extra flap of PCB on that dual Head 5500, that must be hard to get off, I mean how tough is PCB?

is PCB a type of plastic , that aslo wonders me, because PCB looks and feels alot like hard plastic or that is it's protective shield.

Actually it's pre-cut, I could snap it off with very little pressure.
