upgrading video card drivers??
20.07.06 at 01:18:38

ok, it's been a while since I've actually upgraded my video card (almost 3 years this month) and I finally had the cash to do it. I'm going from a Radeon 9600 256 Meg Pro to the X850 256 Meg Pro (still using AGP). Question is, since I'm using the Omega drivers (or even if I was using the regular Cat drivers) since it's still the same manufacture do I have to reinstall or once slapping in the new card, it'll redect it and the drivers will take to the new card since they are the "all in one" bit? Just wondering, makes no difference to me if I have to reinstall them, just thought I'd ask. Like I said, it's been a while since just upgrading a card. Installing a compeletely different card for different manufactures, I do all the time between the Voodoo's and the Kyro's but my main one?

I went from a 9200 to a 9800 and it went fine. It did ask for the CD but I think that was cuz the 9800 was an AIW card. I have a habbit of reloading DirectX whenever I install new drivers.

Okay @jarandasun8, it's a slightly lengthy answer, but here goes...

RADEON (CLEAN) DRIVER RE-INSTALL
==========================

1.If using Omega Drivers - use the uninstaller included in the Start menu shortcuts.
2. Reboot into SAFE MODE.
3. Use Driver cleaner 3 (NOTE - NOT Driver Cleaner Pro) to wipe any left over files and registry entries.
4. Use CAB cleaner (tools menu of driver cleaner 3) to clean your DRIVER.CAB
5. Use RegCleaner (from www.jv16.org) to clean any left over ATI registry entries.
6. Extract your new Omega Driver (or normal ATI driver - but Omega is better) installer and reboot to 'normal' mode.
7. Install and setup the new drivers

DONE - PHEW!

Thanks guys for the answers. Got the new card installed, and question here. Omega's drivers have included the ATI Tray Tools and it does a pretty good job at finding out max core clock speeds and memory timings for OCing. So here's a question, which gets better performance, OCing the core clock speed or OCing the memory timings? Reason I'm asking this, is because I already ran it, and for the core clock speeds, I started getting artifacts at only 14 over core clock stock, but memory timings where able to go almost 40 points over stock, now with my 9600 core clock and memory was at about the same, I was able to go to 460/400 and memory was 230/200 (double that and it's about the same OC as the core- 460), with the X850 it's not the case and I'm wondering why. Not that I want to blow the card up or anything, just looking at what it's potential is. I do have to say, it's one nice jump up from the 9600 though, I'm able to play CoD 2 in the DX9 setting as apposed to the DX7 option they gave for being able to play it at decent frame rates. What a difference!!
