Title: Hijacked!
Post by paulpsomiadis on 10.04.04 at 17:38:51
Well, it seems that some little malicious B4ST4RD has guessed the password to my Yahoo! email account! >:(

I tried to sign in using my usual ID and password on Wednesday night (which by the way I use EVERY day, so I NEVER mis-type it!) and I got an 'invalid password' error! >:(

WTF! :o

So it seems that someone has guessed my original PWD and then signed-in as ME and changed the PWD to what THEY want! :-/

They also took the time to change my 'PWD question' and the answer for it...so I can't even request a NEW password! >:(

I've contacted Yahoo! support, but no luck YET! :'(

So if anyone (mainly just Falcon) got any email from: - gppsomiadis 'at' yahoo 'dot' co 'dot' uk

PLEASE ignore it until I post a reply in this thread that I've got my Yahoo! account back... ::)

Goddam F00KIN' haxors! >:(

K1LL 'EM I SAY! >:(

Hmm...

Beware though, that all other Passwords (including this and other Forums for example) are at stake, if they know what they're doing.

Passwords should never be so easy that they can be guessed or discovered with social engineering...

I take it you don't use the same username and email in every place you're signed up for, aye?

Cause if you would...  :o

(*hint* the hacker's finest tool is codenamed 'google' *hint*)

lol, this reminds me suddenly of a scam on Nitto (a flash-based drag racing game). Scammers would come into the chat area and say something like "hey check it out if you type in your password it comes out like this *********", and so ignorant people would type in their password, it woud pop up on the screen (not as ****), and the next thing you know, 15 people leave the room and the user is screaming the next day because their account got hijacked  ::)

Good luck paul, i get the feeling you're going to be very busy. Don't expect much from yahoo, start moving all your forums (if you have many) to a different email account. Do you have ebay, credit card info, and the like going into that account? If so, I feel really bad, it could cost you a lot of money potentially.

Lets pray the person who *hijacked* his account doesn't know how to use google.

Thankfully there is nothing too sensitive going INTO my account... :-/

However, there's a LOT of private info in there about my family, etc... :-X

Needless to say I'm NOT amused! >:(

Plus I have an address list of over 20 emails or so... :P

ZOINKS! :o

Well, I have begun the LONG and ARDUOUS task of changing ALL of my eBay, PayPal, NOCHEX and forum(s) passwords... ::)

This will take a LONG time, but as Falcon pointed out, better safe than sorry! ;)

Sounds like a good idea ;)

Just make sure you have full control over your EMail or use another one before doing it, since the hijackers would receive the same "Account Password Changed" EMails on the hijacked EMail Account.

Hey paulpsomiadis,
Sorry to here about that matey! It must be horrible because it probably makes you think 'Who would do it?' or 'Is it someone I know?' or even worse: 'What else do they know?'.  :(

I don't know how Yahoo works with their email security but on MSN Hotmail, if someone can guess your answer to your secret question, they get straight into your account and the first thing they have to do is set a new password.  I've known this happen many people.

When I used to be at college, me and my mates tested each others accounts to see how secure we made them. One of my mates did the dumbest thing by having a question like: 'My favourite colour?'.  First answer I typed was 'green' and BANG, I was straight in.  I passed the account back over to him right away and advised him that the most dumbass thing to do was set easy questions like that! Not good!  :(

But some people have more malicious intentions.  We all used to have Hotmail accounts but one of my mates insisted on Yahoo! and he used to use that Yahoo Messenger thingy, in which you had to have a Yahoo! ID. Someone managed to get in on his ID profile and change all of his pics to child porn!  :o  Talk about scary! Because the thing is, he could get done for that and could have been set-up.

Yes, it certainly makes you wary and cautious.  Best thing to do is regularly change your password(s).  I know it's a pain in the arse but it's worth it in the long run.  I hope Yahoo can sort you out and you get your account back.

Ya' mate, i'm REALLY P1SSED OFF at Yahoo! in general at the moment! >:(

First off janskjaer is correct about the security 'question' on Yahoo! mail, it's the same piece of CR4P that the MSN account security offers... >:(

All someone has to do is guess the answer to your 'secret question' and BAM they get your password! >:(

Also it DOES make you paranoid about your mates - I'm currently wondering who would be such a TOTAL A$$HOLE to want to hack into my account, and more to the point WHY? :o

What POSSIBLE reason would anyone have to hack into MY account? :o

As for Yahoo! support - total F00KIN' joke...I've emailed them TWICE from my University email account... ::)

...all they've done is sit on their collective A$$ES so far! >:(

(they're probably DUMB enough to think I'M the hacker, and the 'new' owner of my account is ME...if that makes sense!) ::)

AARGH! Goddam it! >:(

Oh, and an apology to anyone reading this thread for profanities used in this post... :P

...rightly so, as I'm VERY P1SSED OFF! >:(

I'm not choosing a new mail server for a while... :P

I'm just using my University email account for now. ;)

Plus I had something like 20 email addresses in what WAS my email account - and I need them back! >:(

We shall see what happens! ::)

Okay people, the problem has now been resolved! ;D

"But how?" you all ask... ???

First off I'd like you all to join me in a new chant...

>:(!K1LL MICRO$OFT, K1LL MICRO$OFT, K1LL MICRO$OFT, K1LL MICRO$OFT! >:(

Right, that's the VERY BIG RANT over with... :P

The problem occurred due to an update from the 'really' reliable Windows Update service. ::)

Apparently it meant that anyone trying to log on to 'online' email servers got an 'incorrect password' error due to the fact that the password information WASN'T BEING SENT...AT ALL!!! :o

O.K., now return to the chant above...ready eveyone! ;)

L8R Dudes! 8)
