Green dots on Voodoo1 at 800x600
15.03.06 at 10:54:31

I got my first 3dfx card the other day, a mint Diamond Monster 3D Voodoo1, but it seems theres a little rendering problem, at least in Shadow Warrior.

I'm running Win98 with the latest Diamond M3D drivers. At 800x600, there's all these little green dots on the screen, particularly in the Ammo/Health bar down the bottom. There's no problems at 640x480 however. What could be causing this?. I swapped the pass-through cable with the one from my Voodoo2's, but it didn't solve the problem.

Wow Shocked

I thought only Descent 1 ran at 800 X 600 in GLIDE (on a Voodoo1 card). Shocked

Lots of people think the V1 can only do 640 X 480. Does this game run on the original Quake engine?

That problem sounds familiar to me but on GLQuake. I think it was when I switch out the V1 card for a pair of V2s.

Hmm...  Seems like it might have been triple buffering (on the V2's).?.?

The Glide patch for D1 allows 800 x 600 for the Voodoo Graphics chip.

GLQuake can't run at 800 x 600 due to z-buffering requirements, D1 doesn't require z-buffering hence the ability to run at the higher rez.

Shadow Warrior is a Build game, but it still doesn't run that fast on a Voodoo1, even though the 3dfx patch was designed for it.

I'll try turning some options on/off in the settings.

Green dots...check the heat of the card when running at 800x600. Wink

I had some green dots appear with a V2 SLI setup at higher res' due to the chips getting too hot. Roll Eyes

RIGHT, now i've got a freakin 80mm fan sitting directly on top of the Voodoo, and the green dots are still there Sad. She's cool though, the RAM is cool but the core and TMU are pretty hot (i burnt my finger by keeping it there running a test, ow)

There's roughly 3 shimmering green dot fountain things spread around the screen. At 640x480@85hz, theres a few fountains, but at 60hz it's all clear. At any 800x600 refresh rates, there's dots.

This could actually be a problem with my integrated ATI Rage chip. Maybe the green dots would disappear if my Voodoo was linked too a real video card.

Give the card a try in another PC (if possible). Tongue

Be sure of the following first... Wink

1. Maintain the cooling you have. Cheesy
2. The other PC has a PROPER GFX card (no integrated CR@P!) Roll Eyes
3. A clean install of O.S. and drivers. Wink

This should eliminate practically everything from the equation... Smiley

But if it still has them...BTW? ???

I just got back from testing it on my sister's comp (still bloody integrated graphics Angry) and it fared a lot better compatibility wise, but 2 small dot streams appeared at 640x480@85.

While I was at it, I ran some of the tech demo's on my Monster 3D disc and I nearly fainted. The shiny, reflective animations are amazing and the human models looked like they had about 10000 polys.

Yeah, those reflections in the Voodoo demos are ACE! 8)

...but still the integrated GFX... Tongue

...guess we won't know if the card is faulty till you try it in a PC without integrated GFX. Roll Eyes

Yeah I think so...

In 3dfx gaming you could remove the loop cable and plug the monitor directly into the 3dfx card.

Of course when you exit the game, you'll have to plug the monitor back into the 2D (on-board) connector.

It was just speculative really since the Voodoo's image is routed through the frame buffer of the main GFX card when it is sent to the monitor. Tongue

I tend to agree with you guys that it's probably a knackered Voodoo card... Wink

...but I was just trying to eliminate 'extra' factors to confirm if the Voodoo board was indeed royally toasted! Roll Eyes
