Canopus Pure3D VooDoo 2 length
22.02.10 at 21:40:34

I'm looking for a pair of Voodoo 2 card that will fit my old DOS PC. The problem is that the CPU socket on the ASUS sp97v7 mainboard is placed really unfortunate so that standard format Voodoo 2's do not fit (a single card will just fit but a sli setup is really hard). Replacing the mainboard is no option since it has nostalic value. So I was looking for non-reference cards. I see that the Canopus Pure3D II cards are a bit smaller and I think they might fit. But before I shell out a lot of money (the demand for them seems to be relatively high) I would like to know what the exact length is of these cards. I was hoping someone here could tell me.

The PCB itself is 177 mm long, the part behind the PCI-connector is 58 mm long.

Crap, that's still 3mm too long! Thanks for the information though. I assume there are no smaller Voodoo2 designs right? I'm not really an expert on Voodoo 2, I have always been more of a VSA-100 fan.

The only alternative I can think of is the single slot Q3D solutions such as the X-24. But then we enter collectors domain.

Quantum3D's S-12 AGP and a prototype V2 with 1 TMU (6MiB) are the only cards that are shorter then a Canopus card as far as I know.

If the heatsink on the CPU is the limiting factor, you can try modifying the heatsink. In a So7 AMD K6-2 system I've cut out a part of the heatsink so the Voodoo II SLI setup would fit Smiley.

Yes, I'm curious as well about the nostalgia of this motherboard.   Thandor's idea of modding the heatsink is a good idea, however, what about using a different heatsink/fan?

The mainboard stays since this is the PC that tought me the first basics about PC usage and got me hooked to this hobby. It is still authentic, (nothing is modded/changed) I just added the stuff I always wanted as a kid but could never afford. Ideally that would be a creative voodoo 2 SLI setup but that is not going to work because of the length. So for these reasons I want to keep the original hardware Wink

The S12 is not an option because the board lacks an AGP slot. The 90-2440 seems even bigger than the Canopus cards? I think that I have to look into shifting the heatsink under the clamp. For obvious reason I would rather not remover pieces of the heatsink.

Currently Rottentreats is offering the Canopus cards in SLI on ebay. I hope they stay affordable so I can have a look into getting those to fit in my tiny PC  Smiley

True, the 90-2440 is longer than Canopus, if I'm not mistaking is the exact same length of a classic V2. Hmm...You have 4 PCI slots there, you should be able to use 2 of them for V2 without hitting into something.

Maybe if you try to slighty move the heatsink up - the V2 might fit under the heatsink, I remember that I had a very similar motherboard and I moved the heatsink a little up to install a card, socket 7 coolers aren't so "fixed" like newer coolers.

I just moved the heatsink around, which is easy like expected. I can't make it work for regular Voodoo 2's but I think I can fit the Canopus cards now. Now I just need to find some of those to test the theory.

From what I've understand he cannot go with X-24, it's too expensive Sad

It's not really a can't do but I would rather not spend a few hundred dollars/euros on this issue. The X-24 is a collectors items and because of that they sell for big bucks. Additionally they need the proprietary medusa cable which is even harder to find than the card.

But it seems that the Canopus + moving the heatsink 3mm to the right might solve the space problem.  Smiley
