AMD CPU's

Wondering which one might be better, AMD 2800+ Barton core at 333 FSB Socket A or the new Sempron 3100+ Socket 754 chip. With the cutback on the lvl 1 cache and other changes with the Semprons, I don't know how big of difference the 754 socket will be compared to the Socket A board (although there's a little bit more of upgrade options later on down the road).
I have to replace the motherboard that the 2800+ is on for a friend and because of cost, I'm wondering which is better way to go, got about 150$ that we have to play with right now. The 939 socket is just way out of price range with having to get a cpu for that right now. Just kind of wondering what you guys might think. Just replace the board, or get a new Sempron/board combo for about 130$.

Advantages for the Barton:
1) The Barton has 512 KB L2-Cache compared to the Sempron's 256 KB.
2) The Barton has 2083 MHz compared to the Sempron's 1800 MHz.
3) The Barton can have Dual-Channel-RAM with the appropriate Mainboard and at least two sticks of RAM, the Socket 754 is limited to Single-Channel-RAM.
Advantages for the Sempron:
1) It's manufactured in 0.09µ-process compared to the Barton's 0.13µ so it runs cooler.
2) The Sempron has Cool'n'Quiet.
Overall I would prefer a Barton always if you compare Barton and Sempron (except for comparing an XP 2500+ with a Sempron 64).

The semprons cache might be less then the bartons but its cache is faster. Sempron is usually seen as a weak processor. In my country a second hand Barton 2500+ is more expensive then a new Sempron 2800+. I think the reason is that having an Athlon sounds much better than having a Sempron. Otherwise Sempron has a BUS of 1600 and 64bit. So excepting the name I would rather go for the Sempron.

Nice explaination
. I just know that socket A Sempron 3000+ has Barton core, 2000Mhz and 512kbyte cache and Athlon 3000+ with Barton core has more then 2100Mhz. As far as I know the same speed at lower clock rate is due to the different cache. This lead me to believe that Sempron has better cache.

No, the Sempron's rating is not comparable to the rating of the Athlon XP or Athlon 64.
A Sempron 3100+ (socket A) is approximately comparable to an Athlon XP 2600+ while a Sempron 3100+ at Sockel 754 is approximately the XP 2800+ with (IMHO) slight advantages for the XP.

Thanks guys for the help, I appreciate it. I mentioned to him that he should probably go with the Sempron 3100+ with the 754 socket. His old board had three DDR slots and this board only has two so we'll loose a little bit in memory (he had a gig of ram- 1x512, 2x256) but for the money he's got to play with, kind of limited on options here. Besides after looking over 754 style socket, he can add a 64 bit chip to it later on down the road when prices come down on those, so that's the main reason we're going that route with it.
Thanks for the explanation on the chips though, clears up alot (well for the most part
) on what the differences are.
Yeah, I don't know about the 3100+, it was listed on Neweggs website though.
