No thats not possible.
You cannot plug the card in cause there is a mechanical barrier to prevent the connecting of incompatible cards:
the voodoo series agp cards all (exept 4500 AGP and some special 5500 4xAGP) use the 2xAGP interface with 3,3V signal voltage, 4x AGP which comes on all new boards only uses 1,5V  :-/

if you want still a 3dfx card in your sys you can use  pci card or a Voodoo 4 4500 AGP  :)

My AGP slot is not keyed.  I've looked in several manuals, but none of them have specific specification as to what AGP rate I have.  I know I can't use 8x, my card is running in 4x right now.

Will putting in a card to test that isn't compatible make my computer/card a'splode?

If you attempt to operate such a combination, you will destroy either the Motherboard and/or the Video Card in most cases.

Intel mainboard? Chances are no.

This should make things clear:

The problem at early P4-boards is that there were AGP Universal slots (without breaks) installed though they weren't "real" Universal slots but AGP4x (1,5V) slots. This constellation destroyed many boards and cards as they were assembled although they didn't match.

Once more the warning to Antohe Cristian: No P4-Mainboard ever had support for AGP with 3,3V voltage even if it had installed an AGP Universal slot!

And to add to the desaster :

Some older Cards were produced as 4x AGP, but electrically were 2x AGP only.
Others were 2x AGP but do not posess the proper AGP Keying and will fit into a 4x AGP Slot.

ALMOST!

None of the Powercolor 4500's are AGP x 4, they are AGP x 2 and run at 3.3 volts even though they have a AGP x 4 connector.
