- Uninstall 3dfx Tools
- boot in Safe Mode, delete the Voodoo Card in the Device Manager
- then delete the 3dfx .inf File(s) from the Windows\System Directory
- and finally delete all relevant 3dfx Entries in the Registry...

That leaves the System clean of all 3dfx Entries.

Running the 3dHQ installer at that point should work fine.

In case of errors, you could reboot, and select "Standard VGA" initially.
After that, the 3dHQ installer should work just as fine, if the previous method somehow would not work.

The most important step is apparently to clean the Registry, since some old entries are known to cause siginificant problems with the Beta's....

Those that are referring to the Active Display adapter.

They are too many to list individually, usually you can delete ALL 3dfx entries.

But since you are not sure about the Registry, having a backup will make things alot easier.

I have win98se athlon600 &voodoo3 3k agp.
I had installed the 1.07 WHQL(but i had a date of 11/10/2k which i think is different from what is listed in the archive) & started getting page fault problems in module DIBeng .DLL. Per searches & checking MS knowledge base the driver for my voodoo was the likely suspect. I had a few private email exchanges with falconfly & consulted someone else nearby. He installed the 1.09.00 Beta driver & my page fault problem is gone, but none of my fav games work. I tried to play MS motocross madness & i get a message that there is no 3d accelleration card in my system-but the system says it is. I have DirX8(4.08.00.0400) and DxDiag says that DirDraw,D3D & AGP texturing are not available and there is no enable button.  DDraw & D3D do test out to work however.  It appears i am going to have to use a different driver to play my favs & in return for my info on the 109 driver i sure would like to hear recommendations about a good stable DirX8 compatable driver with  tools. I liked the 2.6.2.116 tools. They were easy for color mgt/contrast/brightness so i could shift to a mode for working with dig photos from my camera & back to the brighter set up for my games & usual desktop appearance. I think that leaves out the 1.07b drivers because there are no tools for those.
BTW the tools with the 1.09b driver are nice for those that really want to get into the details of everything including O/Cing if they can get it to work-i am pretty sure you need DX8.1 for those drivers & tools.

The 1.07.00beta Drivers can be installed after any other Driver w/ 3dfx Tools is already installed on the System.

That way, the Tools are retained, and the new Driver uses it without problems normally.

Other than that, the x3dfx and AmigaMerlin are likely the most successful ones, people like those alot.

And even though the newer AmigaMerlin releases are based on the TDHQ Cores, they are apparently much less of a hassle to install and operate...

Lets discuss the TOOLS a moment.  The 107WHQL driver i installed came with 2.6.2.116 version. Your archive only lists the 1.5.6.66 & the 2.6.2.228.
Other sets/series are available with other/3rd party drivers, ie: 2.6.2.228.   What are the basic differences?
It seems that some of the settings for tools that i've seen recommended are not available in the tool set i have.  I know i need & want the color mgt settings easily saved & switched for different uses & that is available to me in the set i have(but not available in the 3dhq 1.01),  but what about the others? And what does one set have in the way of settings that others don't?

Well, the most significant difference in what you see in the 3dfx Tools, is usually the advanced Options section.

Here, everything is listed, that was programmed into the .inf File (the most common area for 3rd party Driver Tweaks).

When it comes to what Updates actually went into 3dfx Tools by 3dfx, I'm actually a bit clueless.

I don't know what for example the difference is, between the V2.6.2.110 , and the newest V2.6.2.116 (that I know that exists)...

I can only imagine, these are minor compatibility fixes by 3dfx, possible more for Win2k, rather than the established Win9x.

The V1.x was the 'oldschool' 3dfx Tools, optically different to the common, new Style 3dfx Tools V2.x ....

I also believe the old one may not be suited for Win2k, but I'm not sure about it.
