@patience,
Kudo's to Daniel for his efforts, but I have been fooling around this morning with the new .dll's and although now the game starts it's very buggy and always kick's out to the desktop within minutes :( From what I have gotten to see in the 15 or so minutes I've gotten to play a bit, the game looks absolutely terrible (textures and lighting are not right at all), funny thing was that the frame rate was a bit better than I had expected on my system, maybe because it's not rendering the scenes correctly :-/ This new wave of modern game's are just going to overwhelm the older cards capabilities :'( |

@patience,
Here's proof positive it runs on my system now, forcing 32 bit helped the stability for me ;D http://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=358&whichpage=30 |

Which of the two D3-MESA releases did you use @Voodoo5500? ???
Was it the one released on the 20th (1st) or the one on the 21st (2nd)? ??? Let us know... ;) Also some more details on how you got it to run stable... ;D ==EDIT== Yup, it does INDEED run on a V5500 - I've got it up and running on my Uncles V5500 PC... ;D I used Mesa 21st (2nd) to run it... :D But HOW do you FORCE 32bit? The game keeps crashing in 16bit... ??? Let us know will ya' @Voodoo5500! ;) |

@patience,
To clarify, my first post should be taken in the context that I have just recently finished/experienced the game on a Athlon 64 3400, Radeon 9800 pro (High graphical set-up) and in sheer frustration of my 15 or so desktop crashes trying to get the game to run on my 5500 system with Mesafx. As I mentioned earlier my forcing 32 bit rendering in the 3dfx tools is what I am attributing to the increased stability I am now experiencing. Before even attempting to run the game with mesa, I wanted to eliminate potential problems and set my processor, video card and 3dfx tools to factory defaults. @paulpsomiadis, 8/21/2004. Game settings = low detail and 640 x 480 resolution. If someone has a similiar or more powerful sytem than mine (the fortunate few of you with 6000's), can stomach the current graphical errors and low frame rates in graphically intensive moments, then I guess to some extent we can consider this another miracle victory for the older cards ;D It aint pretty, and should not be considered practical if you want to experiece Doom3 in all of it's glory, but for me anyway it will run as I played about a 1/2 hr. session last night before going to bed ;) |

@Voodoo5500 is correct, the "Force 32bit Rendering" option in 3Dfx tools does increase stability... ;)
[even though I wouldn't know as I ALREADY had it turned on - DOH! :P :-[] Even with this 'increased' stability, the game is still pretty flakey... :P It will usually hold out until the FPS drops below 2FPS then BOOM - you get kicked back to desktop! :'( I had the game at LOWEST detail - 640x480 (pretty much everything OFF in advanced options, except VSYNCH...) :o All this aside, it's STILL one hall of an achievement to actually RUN DOOM 3 on a V5500! ;D Kudos to our resident MESA man @Dborca! 8) May he bring us many more 'surprises' such as this one! ;) |

I've been playing for a while with no crashes... ::) Still haven't tried Medium detail YET, but I'll get round to it! ;) Kudos again Daniel! 8) |

Doom3 on my Voodoo5 runs very well at 800 x 600 x32 at normal details :) about 40 frames per sec at the most, still fast enough. FSAA x2 ofcourse.

You are right. Soon we will have to buy a video-card for every game |
Title: Re: Doom 3 on Voodoo 5 : this is posssible ! Post by OutOfRange on 06.04.05 at 21:58:05
what's the sense in your post jblue ?
we are talking about a game that is not designed to run on 3dfx based cards... it's just for fun and nothing else... that has nothing to do with todays 3d accelerators... |

It's about all video-cards. Yesterday we had pci video-cards Today we play on agp video-cards!Tomorrow we play on pci express video-cards.And the day after tomorrow we will play on God-Knows-what-nvidia-video-technology cards. Technology is evolving to fast |

Well...
PCI was around for many years, so was AGP, and PCIe is likely to do the same. If you're looking to stay up-to-date without ever buying new Hardware once a while, you should stay clear of PC's and... well... buy a chess game. |

hmm I have recieved a mail form dborca the God and creator of the whole MEsaFX thing and he told me that the Doom3 MesaFX file is the one to use but it has to be updated since that that Quake4 is an updated version of Doom3 Engine.
I have tried it myself with Amigamerlin 3.1 R11 and SFFT 33 and it was a no go for both combinations unless somebody else has a better combination I'd like to hear ya out hehe :) |
