Intel hit with record $1.45B fine
13.05.09 at 17:47:59

Way to go EU!!!!

http://www.bnn.ca/news/9319.html

The European Commission imposed a record 1.06 billion euros ($1.45 billion US) fine on chipmaker Intel Corp. on Wednesday and ordered it halt illegal rebates and other practices to squeeze out rival AMD.

"Intel has harmed millions of European consumers by deliberately acting to keep competitors out of the market for computer chips for many years," European Union Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said in a statement.

yeah, once again the EUtards are trying to use all the legal firepower they have at their disposal to squeeze as much money as they can from anyone they see as a good target (while trying to look like heroes of law in the eyes of common people).they are just as bad (if not worse) than intel with his shady deals.

they are just going to waste all that money as always-either using it on useless projects that will benefit no one,or just let it evaporate in the belly of the EU bureaucratic machinery (part of it will magically appear on the secret bank accounts of a few selected people-one will need a lot of money to live happily on some small private island once the whole europe turns into a total dump),take your pick.

seeing news like this makes me want to puke.

It is a three-edged sword as usual...

On one side, the punishment was long overdue and hits the right guys, no question about it.

On the other side, the damage done to the customers is only a small piece of the cake, as the most damage done was to the competitors - which in turn won't see that fine, just goes into the EU funds.

On the third side, punishing one monopolist while letting other, often even bigger monopolists walk freely due to more intense lobby entanglement inside the EU is just as wrong as the criminal activities intel has long been known to cunduct.

Fine by me, I ain't buying intel anyways. LOL

The EU is doing a good thing with this, as no-one else can do it over here, only downside is, that the cash goes to the EU.

AMD should sue the EU for embassling their missed income. AMD should get a big part of that money in my opinion.

A 1.45 Billion dollar fine without anything going to AMD is theft, pure and simple.

What is to stop the EU for fining anyone they wish just to line thier pockets?

Cut them off, they will change thier tune quick enough when a few hundred companies start crawling up the buracratic backsides.

Intel is getting investigated (and losing cases) worldwide....

Technically it's stealing from thieves, but I agree, damage done should be remedied to AMD.

Business law regulations are really funny. If I sue a business over damaging my own business and win the case - I reveice compensation.

Not in this case, however, makes me think whether the EU initiated their own investigation independently (then it would make sense)...

---------
Not sure if it's the same in the US or on the Asian market, but going through many of the Tier 1 advertising in the print media here, I'm seeing alot of "intel only" Ads.
Upto a point where it really becomes arkward, considering there's very competitive systems to be built with the Phenom II as well.

Is not the difference here that it was the European Commision (for Europe) and not a European court/judge (for involved parties) made the call?

As the matter affect, I kinda belive in EU. Seeing many projects funded by it I would say that this was done as it should be. 1.5 B $ is better off in hands of EU Commision then in USAs hands; EU might invest the money into something other then new rockets and bigger guns!

This fine to intel is enough help for AMD, belive me. It cuts them short on marketing, on development, on everything so competitors do have an edge now, even if they dont get the money directly. And why should only AMD profit from it after all? What about Sun? What about motorola? And VIA? What about hundreds of smaller, barely known companies?

Like crooked beaurecrats in Brussels?

Theft is theft, Intel should go tell them to pound sand.

I couldn't agree more..believing in EU is like believing in santa claus-too bad the nice big man with the power to make all wishes come true simply does not exist..

EU should quit doing this stupid cr@p and start focusing on fixing the real problems..before the problems start to fix EU.

I guess it's like with all governments - there's good stuff, there's bad stuff and there's the really ugly stuff.

Politics - as usual Tongue
