Voodoo5 6000 rig
31.12.06 at 17:39:50

Forum newbie  Smiley  Any fellow users regularly using their 6000 cards for vintage gaming?

Finally got around to building my v5 6000 rig after 2yrs of procrastinating. Basically just gathered up a bunch of old parts laying around for this: Intel mobo, P3-850, 256MB, Win98SE. This video card is schweeet! Just now starting to appreciate the raw power of this thing, as compared to 1998-2001 stuff back then.... about on par with a GF2 Ultra i'd say.

Loaded up Quake2, Q3, Need for Speed 2 SE, NFS3 so far. All the benchmark demos work, even on Q3 at 1600x1200 with FSAA x8 turned on---- only 7fps  Shocked  Playing these games has brought back goood ole memories of my first LAN parties.. sniff, sniff. Amazing how fast 10yrs comes and goes.

Anyway, just wanted to reminisce a little here, and find out who among you have a working 6000 also. My card is a 3700 series with the brick power supply. Everything is in original shape with no modded internal power connectors, PCI rework, etc. I actually feel damn lucky now to have one of these things. Paid $700 for it on ebay couple years ago. Anyone have a rough idea what they fetch nowadays?

Hi rimshaker,
welcome to this forum !

A V5-6000 goes for about 800-1000$ nowadays, so they have been stable in value over the years.
Ok, first ones have been sold for much more, but those were exceptions.
I bought mine back in 2002 for 400$, but it was non-functional and had to be repaired first.
Some weeks ago I built a new rig for her, this time based on AMD. System specs are :
Athlon-XP-M 3000+
Epox 8K3A+ ( Via KT333 chipset )
1024 MB Ram
V5-6000 ( built 2600 )

Unfortunately I did not have much time for running benchmarks, maybe I will do that in the next days.

if you want one complete with a Voodoo Volts external PSU it can get past the 1400 US dollar mark with insurance, tax & custom taxes Lips Sealed

My model is the Rev.A 3700 with a Rev.A 0030 Voodoo Volts Smiley

but yeah a loos card is about 800 to 1000 USD Smiley

If I had one I'd still keep the PSU brick separate and run it from internal PSU connectors. Smiley

It's not electrically sound to have two separate PSU's going into the same PC... Roll Eyes

I plan to build one just like Rolo01's machine for my 3700 w/rework. I may or may not get the "M" CPU (I would like to though Wink ) I'm looking for the motherboard now. Some Joker on ebay is selling memory and lists it for that board so I can't do the auto search w/email reply Angry

My only worry about using this on a daily basis is actually breaking it somehow  Undecided  These functional 6k cards are all based on stuff that was "work in progress" at the time. And even the 3700 series were just pre-production runs.

But as the saying goes as far as computer parts, if they can run w/o problems at the start.. most likely they'll run forever. Thing is.. does this apply to these functional 6k cards??

Wow, so basically even the external voodoo PS is worth almost as much as the card itself.

@ Paulpsomaidis

I didn't say to use the Voodoo Volts Roll Eyes

I only stated if you want a complete set it would cost well over 1200 a 1400 US Dollars Wink since a 6K without a VoodooVolts isn't complete imho.

But even I use the internal hookup when using it to test some games and so on, the Voodoo Volts is just for the 3dfx collection it's self, since it is an original part of the Voodoo 5 6000 it's self. Wink

voodoovolts

I sold one on ebay and it brought in just over $100.00US That was about a year ago. There are different types and some are worth more than others.

Single pin is much cheaper then a 4 pin, man I'd hate to see the bidding on a 4 pin unit.

That could get real ugly.

Umm...but @rimshaker said... Roll Eyes

Which means he's using the Voodoo volts... Tongue

Like I said (and @Obi_wan agreed) it's safer to use internal PSU hookup for the V5 6000. Wink

So if you intend to continue using your V5 6000, get some internal PSU hookup connectors installed. Grin

I also agree with the above. That's why I sold my V Volts. The brick was fully functional but I wouldn't trust it with my V6K.

Safer to use internal PS mod than the external power brick... yea, i can agree with that. But what if you only have one 6k card, and you rather keep it in original shape?

Either way, with that said, I'll look into modding my other functioning original 3700 revA card   Wink

Dang it! Sad

It's so unfair to folks like me who don't have a V5 6000 - then there's so many other people with more than one! Sad

Grumble, grumble...sniff... Cry

Totally agree Paulpsomiadis Wink That is why I went for a much rarer card , the 3dfx Voodoo 5 5000 AGP 32MB Rev.A0 3700 instead, to complete the three obvious different ways of Voodoo 5 AGP Wink

From Top to Bottom 8)
3dfx Voodoo 5 6000 AGP 128MB Rev.A   3700
3dfx Voodoo 5 5500 AGP   64MB Rev.A   2500
3dfx Voodoo 5 5000 AGP   32MB Rev.A0 3700
