Add: Daytona

Daytona supports up to 256MB of DDR-SDRAM per chip.

Someone (Rolo01) ran a Daytona at 180MHz with no heatsink! That's a huge improvement over Napalm.

Yeps, that surley is, but what is so different between Napalm and Daytona?

They both have things in common , now don't they?

This is something that has chased my mind for some time.

The Daytona=vsa101
The Napalm=vsa100

The daytona used .18micron over .25micron and it used 64bit DDR ram. And because of the .18 micron it used less power.

It is a pity that that used 64bit DDR Ram on the daytonas. So the advantage of DoubleData is gone, the performance is equal to 128bit SDRam.

Daytona was a low end part.

1) The Daytona was the first .18 micron die chip made by 3dfx, it's power consumption is so low that it can be operated at 143 mhz with no heatsink.

Cough, 180MHz. Rolo01 can confirm. At the very least 166MHz.

Hey, my 32 MB card is clocked at 143 mhz and it's going to stay that way.

Dead prototypes are no fun.

Speaking of which, I have been inside all day with a nasty cold so I spent the time benchmarking 13 diferent 3dfx cards, page coming soon.

Diamond Monster 4 MB
Quantum3D Obsidian SB50-4440
Pre-Production Voodoo 2 8MB
Pre-Production Voodoo 2 12 MB SLI
Pre-Production AGP Banshee (100/100mhz)
Gigabyte AGP Banshee (110/128mhz)
Prototype Voodoo 3 143 mhz
Prototype Voodoo 3 MCM 143 mhz
Pre-Production Voodoo 3 164 mhz
Prototype Daytona 32 MB DDR 143 mhz
V5-4500 (5500 in single chip mode)
V5-5500 AGP 166 mhz
V5-6000 AGP 167 mhz

Nice job with the benchmarks. My Diamond Monster used to beat the stuffing out of the Obsidian 50-4440. I guess because I was using Diamond drivers for the Monster and Q3D rel.3 for the 50-4440. The 50-4440 wouldn't run over 53MHz and the Diamond drivers had a slider that went from 53-57MHz. The default setting for the 50-4440 is 50MHz I believe.

I could actually push the Monster to 60MHz with no errors by adding following line in the autoexec.bat file:

SET SST_GRXCLK=60

Will depend on the game engine too- Just look at the Banshee cards compared to the Voodoo 2's. Games with single pass engines will run faster on higher clocked cards with 1 TMU but if a game like GLQuake takes advantage of extra TMU's then it will surge ahead even with a slower clock.

Adding notes and polishing up the page now, will also have some screenshots too.

Nice work of the V2SLI  Wink. I wonder what it looks like in a faster system. But anyway, Gdonovan you proved me that a Voodoo graphics card can run with CPU higher thatn 800mhz.
Maybe this 1000mhz cellie is just a rare exception, but if it is not I wil try my Voodoo graphics (when I get it) on my athlon 2600Xp+ (when I fix my cooling system  Tongue). What if the voodoo2 had 16mb ram per TMU, it would own that 143mhz vooodoo3 Wink (maybe 5fps faster).

I don't see why it would not but clearly the cards are bottlenecking- I did do some tests with the pc downclocked to 667 (10 x 66) but didn't include the results as I had enough work to do Wink

The only game where the Monster card picked up anything of note was Quake 3 of course, 18.1 vs 19.8 fps. The Obsidian card did better, 24.7 vs 27.2.

The SLI rig did really pick up from 667 vs 1000 down in the low resolutions for Q2 and Q3, here are the results.

Quake 3 667 mhz = 50/50/44
Quake 3 1000 mhz =70/66/46

Quake 2 667 mhz =110/92/65
Quake 2 1000 mhz = 130/99/67

GLQuake = no change.

Quake 3 is such a CPU hog!

Remember most of the cards were pre-production, a set of production boards with hotter clocks or more refined bios settings would generate better numbers. Just look at the spanking the GA-630 gives the 3dfx Banshee! That card smokes!

If I have some spare time I'll toss in some production boards and note the numbers and do a little overclocking for fun.

I have my V2 SLI running at 100mhz in a Athlon2600xp.
If I have my system up and running againg I wil do some test. I have posted some teste some time ago on 3dfxzone.

This pure3d card I'm testing right now is scaring me- The damn thing has overclocked to 65 mhz without breaking a sweat and just keeps on going!

Time to try 70 =)

No go on 70, starting to get some texture corruption.

66 is the best it will do, not bad. That's 16 mhz over spec.
