Title: Glide3X, MesaFX, OpenGL ICD, GLU32
Post by nudgegoonies on 03.01.08 at 11:44:32
Hi :D
it's been a long time since my last visit.

I use Win98SE with SESP21D with a Voodoo3 on a 933 P3. The driver is the latest official with OpenGL and Glide DLL's and OVL from the latest beta, the and some default options changed (like Geometry Assist on and GlideSplash off). My first question ist, what is the difference between the those 2 OpenGL ICD's with the same Versionnumber where the latest on falconfly's archive is the WIN2K Version. Can i use this in Win98SE? I tried both and found no difference. Some older games like the latest official Quake1 have problems with both and work better with the ICD from the latest official Voodoo3 driver.

Now to Glide. There is the Sourceforge Glide Page with an open source Version of Glide3X. I remember i had problems with Glide games with that Version but havn't tried it again a long time. The open source Glide hasn't been updated in this time so i thing it's not a good idea to replace Glide3X DLL in the System dir with this one.

Now i checked all the latest MesaFX files. Neither falconfly nor 3dfxzone.it have the latest on there servers. There are more actual ones on dborca's site. The latest MesaFX seems to be the one from the latest SFFT alpha. This is a Windows XP driver but i extracted the DLL and it works quite well. There is one additional DLL for this one wich is called DXTN wich seemt to me a S3TC decompressor. But i don't know how and if it works.

Often there is a Glide3X DLL in the MesaFX distribution. Also there is a more actual one distro on dborca's site. It seems to me these are Versions of Sourceforge Glide that are compiled by dborca himself. Does MesaFX really needs these special compiled DLL's ore does it work with the official ones and what is the difference?

I tried to replace the original ICD with the latest MesaFX together with DXNT and the latest dborca Glide DLL and made some tests. Games like GL-Tron, Armagetron and other Sourceforgegames, Flightgear, etc. and the run also in a window but all those MS OpenGL screensavers don't work anymore. I already thought this has something to do with the GLU32 DLL. This hasn't been updated for years. The latest OPENGL32 for win98 is from 2000. But as far as i understood this dll is just a softwarerenderer and if an accelerated card is installed passes anything to the ICD.

Puh, many things. What really interests me are the MesaFX and Glide3X dependencies. Normally i would repace the official ICD with MesaFX as nearly all these new games don't work with the official ICD, crash system completely or have serious display problems.

Bye  :D

-opengl ICDs: you have pretty much said it yourself :)

-latest mesaFX can indeed be found at dborca's site.dxtn is a s3tc compression library and it does nothing on pre-napalm cards=useless for you.

-yes,the mesaFX glide3x is a special build.highly recommended if you want to use mesaFX.

-screensavers dont like mesaFX,thats a known issue.keep the 3dfx ICD in the system folder and drop mesafx to the game's main folder, thats the recommended use (rename to opengl32.dll) if you need enhanced opengl compatibility for that game.see here: http://helppage.3dfx.sk/#mesafx

Thank You very much!

I searched this forum a bit and i found 2 links to a Glide3X for MesaFX wich are identical to the one i have. So i think this is the right one.

The MesaFX DLL from the SFFT and from dborca's site are not identical but i don't know the differences. Both versions have the same number 6.3.0.1 but differ in size and in time.

Let me guess, there is no need to fiddle around with different Glide DLLs for Glide games. I remeber 2 games with problems as there are POD and Incubation with quitting crashes.

Unfortunately, I haven't heard anything anymore from D.Borca after he joined the realms of 3dfxzone.it ....

The only thing that reminds me of the old days is the statement still posted there "Note: only 3dfxzone and FalconFly are sites authorized by me to host MY binaries"

Before that, he used to EMail me the latest Betas and Release Versions, after which they were integrated into the Archive.

The way I understood the progress, is that the Releases after these days were based on another codebase (original 'universal' Mesa from sourceforge), thus I assumed there would be little to be gained 3dfx-wise from the later releases found on his site (can't confirm though, so I may be wrong on that assumption).

Hi Falconfly,
nice to read from you again :D

Too bad there is no advancement with MesaFX. Yesterday i tried to compile the latest Mesa 7.0.2 but i had no luck. A lot of undefined variables. Maybe i have luck with the current or old version of MinGW (i used the experimental) but i'm afraid it won't work although everything is in place and also the readme's for 3DFX are updated. But i hade no luck with the FX=1 X86=1 options. Another problem could be the Glide headers as i had to extract a lot of single files from the sf glide and as ps47 has written, dborca used a speciel Glide for his MesaFX Versions. Too bad ther is no advancement :-(
