Title: Shall I keep the Vooodoo2s?
Post by Rob on 23.08.03 at 12:55:06
Hi

I have an Athlon 850 system (KT133) which currently has a 32Mb TNT II (Diamond V770D) AGP card and two Voodoo2 cards in SLI.

The Voodoos consist of one creative and one seemingly unidentifiable card.
To run these cards in my system I need to install reference drivers, mismatched SLI and Athlon compatible drivers.

Benchmarking the cards in Quake III  shows that they only achieve ~1FPS faster than the TNT II using the same settings (800x600 x 16bpp, Texture detail one setting down). By slightly overclocking it, the TNT II can match their performance.

The cards have caused instability at times, although improved cooling may have fixed this.

Is it really worth keeping my Voodoos in this system? They generate a lot of heat and perform similarly to the TNT II (with possible reliability issues) with less features.
Glide is one advantage - although most of the games I play don't require it.

It seems that owning Voodoo2 cards can be a pleasure and a pain at the same time.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Rob

For me u must keep Voodoo2 cards because under glide games they run very good ;)

If you don't play any games that depend upon them then remove them by all means.

I couldn't remove mine since I play many DOS and Windows glide games and prefer some OpenGL games on them (for reasons more of nostalgia than anything else  ;) ).

Yeah, like Patience says, it'd be easier with TWO Creative V2's. :P

Your best bet is to keep the Creative V2 you already have, and GRAB another Creative V2 from eBay to get a matched pair. ;)

After this, get some cool looking heatsinks and some thermal epoxy and glue them to your Creative V2 pair. :D

You'll probably need a good fan for some air movement down the length of the cards too... ;D

If you can manage all this, then you'll have some GREAT 3dfx memorabilia (I should know, as I ALREADY did ALL of this to my matched pair of Creative V2's and they work GREAT!) 8)

It's up to you really, but the 3dfx community is a nice place to be part of! ;D

PEACE! 8)
