Title: My VoodooMAC 5 broke! Arhhhh!!! :(

Can it be fixed? It looks to be a simple job, but I have no idea where to go to get it fixed! ???

*ugh*

Did it "pop" off itself (overheat or other End-of-Life of that component), or did you shear it off ?

(can't tell, since the bottom of the component looks a tad burned, or could be remains of a glue?)

If the component is still good, a skilled person with a suitable soldering Tool might get it fixed.
Either find someone you know who has the right tools, or try to find an old TV/Electronics repair shop; those usually can fix something like that as well.

(always assuming there is no special soldering technique required to do it)

Me to the rescue! ;D

If the capacitor is the ONLY broken component on the board - it looks like I could fix it quite easily! ;)

From the pictures it seems as though you've actually PULLED the solder pads away from the board as well! :o

Usually this would mean the card would be F.U.B.A.R. (F***ED - UP - BEYOND - ALL - REPAIR). ::) :P

However, the LUCKY thing is that the original solder pads for the capacitor are connected to some VERY large tracks on the PCB - this would mean it's relatively easy for someone who knows what they're doing to repair! :D

Of course, if you actually wanted me to do the job you'd have to post the card and the 'loose' component to me for rework... ::)

It's up to you, either that or find somewhere local... ;)

Nuff said! 8)

P.S. @Falcon - the 'residue' on the component is glue! ;)

I pulled the capacitor out when I pulled the card out of my motherboard! :o Man I totally freaked out when I found out what I just done! ???

I'll send you the card paulpsomiadis, I'm pretty sure you can fix it. The capacitor still has it's metal pins on so I think it's just a quick solder job.

Do your live in the US paulpsomiadis?

Err...you just asked the WORST question! :o

And unfortunately, it answers itself! :(

I live in the U.K. ::) :P

Which unfortunately means that postage for ANY parcel from the U.S.A. to U.K. will cost a LOT of cash! :o

Just on a general note to any other forum members who live in the U.S.A. - if you can help @Maverick-DBZ-
in the same way that I can (namely by fixing his V5500MAC)...then please reply in this thread... ;)

If not, then I'll P.M. @Maverick-DBZ- with my address as a last resort... ::)

I'm confident that fixing the card is pretty easy, but I'd want to save us BOTH the postage costs - as I'm a student and don't have much cash! :'(

I'll STILL do the job if circumstances push us to go in that direction though! ;)

No problem paulpsomiadis, I'm sure I can find a local repair shop somewhere in my area.

I had a feeling you lived in the UK but I wanted to confirm it. No real bid deal really it's not your fault you like in the UK. ;)

I'll keep everyone posted once the card is fixed. :)

Good luck man! ;)

At least it's fixable... ::)

A mate of mine recently had his Radeon X800 BURN OUT on him...thankfully it was under warantee, so he's waiting for a replacement... :P

PEACE! 8)

Burn? you mean that literally? or did the core just overheat and die?

Title: Re: My VoodooMAC 5 broke! Arhhhh!!! :(

@DenisF - a bit of BOTH actually... :o

The core got SO HOT that it MELTED the heatsink off of the card - consequentially the core then melted! :o

EEK! :o

Maverick-DBZ-, if you can't find a repair shop that can do it, I can pick up the task easily, espeically if you (or someone else) can locate a replacement capacitor. It won't be pretty (no repair to a break like that will), but it will work.

BTW, email me if you do require my services, I would be more than glad to help, but this IP, like all my others, will undoubtedly be blocked as soon as I finish this post.

Thanks for the kind offer, but it already got repaired. ;D The capacitor was still good. Thank god. :o

I did it myself, :o Yes I know it was risky but I got some pratice off some other cards. ;)

I didn't think it would be so easy. :P

edit: why would your ip be banned again?

@amp_man got into an argument with some of the forum members a LONG time ago... ::)

@Falcon and @Patience took a rather dim view of this prolonged arguing - and banned him... :P

Plus some other LONG story about posts on another forum... ::)

Blah, blah... :P

P.S. Glad to hear you fixed your card! ;D

(Pictures?) ???

Close call! Glad you got the card fixed!  Would have been more expensive in the long run if you would have had to go out out and buy a replacement!  Have you seen how much those puppies are going for lately?  ;)
OUCH!  :o
