Title: [S] Various 3dfx - April 2009 Sale
Post by FalconFly on 13.04.09 at 12:21:04
It's been a while since the last sale and the job has kept me too busy.
But now it's the time again and a few asorted parts are for sale :)
Auction has ended 1816Z

Highest bids :
Item 1 : RaverX, 115 Euro
Item 2 : RaverX, 2 Euro
Item 3 : RaverX, 2 Euro
Item 4 : Tweakstone, 110 Euro
Item 5 : razrx, 125 Euro
Item 6 : RaverX, 95 Euro

End of Sale : Sunday, 19 Apr 1800Z (=2000L German DST) or last bid +5 Minutes
(if you have questions about how this termination works, please ask to get it explained, it's very simple)

As usual, all transactions come with full money-back warranty if the buyer is not happy with the item.

To keep things simple : all prices have to be exclusive shipping costs (keep those in mind, Germany has expensive shipping prices!).
See bottom of Post to see international shipping prices and notes.

Item 1 : Tagged Banshee Card

http://www.falconfly.de/temp/Mar2009_Banshee_Tagged_front-p.jpghttp://www.falconfly.de/temp/Mar2009_Banshee_Tagged_back-p.jpg
(click on thumbnail for HighRes Image)

An unknown, Tagged Banshee card, PCI. I can only assume I got it from Gary, as it has been here for some time.
600-0044-02 is also embossed into the Guillemot Maxi Gamer Phoenix, but their retail PCBs were brown to my experience.

PCB Date : 3698
(Note : 1st 3dfx Banshee Drivers are dated 30 Aug 1998, hence this card is an early one)

Working condition : unknown (traditionally I have never powered up such cards)

Item 2 : Diamond Monster Fusion, AGP

http://www.falconfly.de/temp/Mar2009_Diamond_Banshee_front-p.jpghttp://www.falconfly.de/temp/Mar2009_Diamond_Banshee_back-p.jpg
(click on thumbnail for HighRes Image)

The good old Diamond Banshee model, reportedly among the fastest Banshees ever built and shouldn't be missing in any decent collection.

PCB Date : 5198

Working condition : sold as working (no testing platform available)

Item 3 : Quantum3D Obsidian2 90-2440 10MB

http://www.falconfly.de/temp/Mar2009_Quantum3D_Obsidian_10MB_front-p.jpghttp://www.falconfly.de/temp/Mar2009_Quantum3D_Obsidian_10MB_back-p.jpg
(click on thumbnail for HighRes Image)

I also got this one from Gary, possibly from a coin machine. The only type of its kind I ever owned with such odd VRAM equipment.

PCB Date : 1599

Working condition : unknown (traditionally I have never powered up such cards)

Item 4 : Quantum3D SB100, PCI, 600-0121-04

http://www.falconfly.de/temp/Apr09_SB100-1p.jpghttp://www.falconfly.de/temp/Apr09_SB100-2p.jpg
http://www.falconfly.de/temp/Apr09_SB100-3p.jpg
(click on thumbnail for HighRes Image)

This one has been with me for a long time, even without shades makes for an impressive piece of Hardware.
Special : still has the original mounting bracket and is in superb condition.

PCB Date : 4497

Working condition : can't get it to work

Item 5 : Voodoo4 4500 PCI, full Retail

http://www.falconfly.de/temp/Apr09_V4-1p.jpghttp://www.falconfly.de/temp/Apr09_V4-2p.jpg
http://www.falconfly.de/temp/Apr09_V4-3p.jpg
(click on thumbnail for HighRes Image)

Basically an all time classic, not much to say about it.
It is absolutely complete, from Manual, Driver CD to its FCC compilance and comes with a Demo CD as a Bonus.
Special : card's fan has the old, original black 3dfx Logo!

Working condition : Tested and fully working!

Item 6 : 3dfx Velocity 100, full Retail

http://www.falconfly.de/temp/Apr09_Vel100-1p.jpghttp://www.falconfly.de/temp/Apr09_Vel100-2p.jpg

(click on thumbnail for HighRes Image)

Last but not least, something well known from the bare cards, but this absolutely complete Retail Package doesn't come along often.
I believe it took me no less than 2 years to aquire this item - and back then it emerged (as usual these old days) from a bidding war, if I remember correctly.

Working condition : sold as working

International Shipping prices (DHL Postal Services, Germany)

Code:
Destination     Parcel    Insured Package
Germany             3,90€           6,40€
Europe             8,60€          17,00€ !
Worldwide      12,90€          32,00€ !!
Allow for 14 days ground shipping for Europe and bare in mind international ground shipping will take a long time; Air Mail will just about cost a vital organ :P
(conditions permitting and depending on sales price, I may upgrade the shipping type free of charge for buyer's safety and convinience)

I've installed Anthony's WinXP Driver and looks good in the Device Manager.

But both 3dfx Donut Demo and Quake II fail to initiate Glide, any other quick ways to test Glide under WinXP on an Obsidian ?

Good news, I've aquired a suitable test platform, so I will be able to test the cards under Win98 (Results will come most probably on Friday)

--- edit ---

Turns out it is a 4x AGP only platform, so will only be able to test PCI cards :P
(but it got me an AthlonXP 2200+ with 256MB RAM, DVD Drive, Case, PSU and Floppy for about 12$, which is an okay bargain ;) )

Installing Win98SE right now.

Good to hear - looking forward to it :)

Title: Re: [S] Various 3dfx - April 2009 Sale
Post by FalconFly on 18.04.09 at 00:52:19
Oh well, got Win98SE installed, the SB100 also installs fine and now also has the Q3D Display Properties Tab. Looking good so far.

Did some testing but basically everything going 3D failed (inlcuding the definitely working Radeon 7000 AGP) and eventually the System failed to boot all together :P

Turns out the Harddrive I used is toast, so I have to reinstall on a new Harddrive tomorrow.

--- edit ---

Bad news, I can't get PCI cards to work reliably in the test System.
I finally managed to make the PCI 2D Card run (attaching or touching the VGA cable is enough to make the card freeze).

But : although properly installed I only get pixel glibberish from the SB100...
Might be it has the same problems in that system as the 2D card, might be it's toast against all expectations.

Anyway, I have to assume the card is possibly damaged and will change its status in the auction accordingly.
Due to that, recalls of bids already placed on it are accepted of course.

In fixed timeline Auction (no extensions) that would be true.

But with the +5 Minutes extensions and the permanently updated Highest Bidders overview, a quick edit is not a hughe problem (has to occur fast though, which it did).

Always monitor (refresh browser) the 1st Post overview, as usual this will always show you the top bidder and current termination. That's the best way to keep the overview on all items.

@ RaverX

Yes, that was quite a blast. Luckily I didn't place more items into the auction, otherwise keeping everything up-to-speed gets really messy ;)

I find these type auctions too confusing as well. I have wanted to jump in at times as FF has some nice items. I have stayed away because of the extended closing times...

Agreed as well.

My suggestion would be to put the description of what the "+5 min rule" is in the initial posting for reference.  Sometimes I forget the finite parts of that rule.   ::) LOL

Since this wasn't the first Auction with the +5 Minute rule, I assumed everyone knows how it works.

For those that don't or participate in my Auctions here for the first time, there is the note to ask ahead of time to get it explained...

Having to explain it, clear up misunderstandings or seeing participants overlook almost an entire page of new bids (browser error?) while updating the highest bids table + current auction termination upto 3x per Minute (!) is a worst-case scenario and hurts everyone.

Of course I could make the Auction EBay style, but that means everyone will try to "snipe" their items last minute. People with less potent internet connection would definitely lose out and we'd have losing bids due to smallest time syncronization problems (just see how important it is to get people synced onto the right time zone and you see what trouble we'll run into when it comes to synchronizing onto 1 Second).
I really hardly see such auctions in Forums for exactly these reasons, except when I can't be around to manage the final minutes, which I try to avoid.

Another way I've seen was to make the auctions either open end (seller can at any time agree to a price suggestion, often leaving other people pissed getting into the auction too late), and last but not least the "buy it now"-Model. That doesn't work for me, since I can hardly assess a reasonable value for many of the cards I sell. Often enough, those that I assume would spark alot of interest fail at 1-2 Euro, cards that I assume are "generic" rocket upto beyond 100 Euro (?).

At least that's my perspective.

Bottom line :
Having the first posting open in a separate Tab and hitting refresh once every Minute can't be too much to ask, works for 50MBit connected users just as fine as for 56k Analog Users.
That's as convinient as it gets and people don't even have to monitor every individual posting, even so they have at least ~3 Minutes to check on their item and consider increasing their bid or not. Honestly, IMHO doesn't get any better than this, while keeping fair play for all. At least I don't know of any way to further improve that auction technique.

(for those that mind the high sales prices reached, bare in mind that is usually nothing compared to the bidding wars I went through to aquire many of them - and I bet you have never seen me moaning about it ;) )

-- edit --

Next time I will make the 2nd Posting an explanation Post concerning the +5 Minutes rule. That should keep everyone up to speed :)

-- edit 2 --

Since we have a Voting function in the Forum, I'll start a Poll about the most desired Auction technique. Having the majority decide about what they like best is probably the smartest solution and I'll then make my auctions that way.

Oh ya- Between you, me, Oscar and Patience we use to have some pretty mean bidding wars on Ebay.
