Title: Mercury I/O Cable *Transaction Complete*
Post by gamma742 on 05.09.05 at 01:05:49
I thought I'd list this Item for all of you Mercury sub-System owners. If you plan to get your Mercury off the ground you'll need to get the video stream from the AAlchemy Module to the Medusa cable. There are two ways to accomplish this, one is through the "Mercury I/O Connector P/N 650-0832-01A" and the other is with a custom cable such as the one I constructed.

Entertaining offers between $25-$35 USD

Note: only the "Black Cable" shown is for sale...

Code:
added Mon 5th 2005 14:45 Pacific Time Zone

The Item will ship Monday the 12th.

This item is NOT offered in any other forum.

Depends on how heavy the package is and what country it is going to:

the one I sent you was 5 pounds, 10 ounces.  a 4 pound, 3 ounce package I sent to Germany was $23 but a 1 pound 1 ounce package to Australia was $22.45

Free Shipping to Active FalconFly Members in a flat bubble pack envelope :)

gamma, tell me what use does the black cable on the 3rd picture on the backside of the case  in your signature?

i also bought a single fully retail boxed 200SBi and there were two small cables and two connectors, just like on a voodoo graphics or voodoo 2... can i use it?

Those are for SwapLock/SyncLock. If you have several Mercurys or SBi (Iron) systems you can run them together for multi-monitor support. I have some demos... Ah there's a screenshot in another post...

http://www.falconfly-central.de/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=general;action=display;num=1121522887;start=30

Title: Re: [S] Mercury I/O Cable
Post by gamma742 on 11.09.05 at 02:56:13
Well, I donno. I would sort of like to run my Mercury with two 200SBi in a SwapLock ring with the Mercury as the Center Stage channel and the 200SBi's for the left and right channels.

Problem :-/

I only have one 200SBi :(

i thought you agreed with that deal with my 200Sbi...

Title: Re: [S] Mercury I/O Cable
Post by gamma742 on 18.09.05 at 03:10:01
The details of the trade seemed unclear to me. Let me see if I can clearify.

You want to trade me a fully functional 200SBi for my cable plus a Mercury AAlchemy Cap Module?

Title: Re: [S] Mercury I/O Cable
Post by TM30 on 18.09.05 at 15:27:40
yeah you send me the cable + AA cap. i pay the shipping costs.
if then my mercury works i'll send you a functional 200SBi, you pay the shipping costs...

if it doesnt work i'll send you the AA cap and cable back, at my costs...

Title: Re: [S] Mercury I/O Cable
Post by gamma742 on 18.09.05 at 19:13:38
Dude, I can't guarantee that Mercury :-/

You didn't buy it from me, Patience aka; (NightBird) aka; (mystychat) bought mine and I recieved positive FB on the deal. As a matter of fact, I have 100% Positive Feedback on ebay http://feedback.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback&userid=gamma742

I can only guarantee the parts that are mine, the AA cap and the cable.

This was listed as a Sale [S] in the Marketplace.

If you want to trade a functional 200SBi for these parts, that sounds like a pretty good deal.

Here are my terms:

You ship me the 200SBi (you pay shipping).

I receive and test your 200SBi.

a) If it tests good :) I will send you my Cap & Cable. (I pay shipping)
b) If it test bad :( I return your 200SBi (>:( I pay shipping >:()

i already sent him an email but he did not respond on it...

gamma i think it will be hard that we will deal. cause when i have your cap and cable and my merc still doesnt work it has no use for me, but you have definatly a functional 200Sbi from me.

believe me, that is not a good deal in my mind.

no sorry, it has no use without that AA cap

i tested my merc on Win NT. It detects 4 single 200Sbi... so i do not need only that cable...

what about that trading deal with my 200Sbi?

Title: Re: [S] Mercury I/O Cable
Post by gdonovan on 19.09.05 at 14:36:41
Why don't you send your cap card to gamma for testing, if he is willing to test it of course.

Title: Re: [S] Mercury I/O Cable
Post by TM30 on 19.09.05 at 15:15:09
yeah that is also a solution! lets wait whats the meaning of gamma...

but gamma, you have a green brick? right?

Title: Re: [S] Mercury I/O Cable
Post by gdonovan on 20.09.05 at 03:10:40

In case you are wondering what a malfunctioning brick looks like in the display properties.

Title: Re: [S] Mercury I/O Cable
Post by gamma742 on 20.09.05 at 04:19:08
I would love to see a black brick work but unfortunately all of the bricks I know of in the world, only 3 are fully functional and 1 functions but the the graphics are so bad on that one it looks worst than a 4 MB voodoo1.

Of these 4 bricks, all of them are green. Every "Black" brick I have ever heard of is non-functional as a brick.

I think the black bricks are all bad. I think they all had problems and were recalled by Q3D and replaced with green ones. This is only my opinion, I would be afraid to own a functional "Black" brick for fear that I would fire it up one day and it would report 4 SBi cards instead of the brick it once was. See the above pic for details.

Happy brick properties.

Title: Re: [S] Mercury I/O Cable
Post by TM30 on 20.09.05 at 09:45:54
so i will give it a try with the AA cap of gamma... there is a small chance that only this little thingy is defective on my brick...

so gamma, what next?

Title: Re: [S] Mercury I/O Cable
Post by gamma742 on 21.09.05 at 04:20:59
I don't think my cap will help. After speaking with Gary, he has tried a known good cap on his Black brick and 2 others, one of which was Oscar's prior to shipping it to him. In all three cases, it did not help. I too had a bad brick from computer_md (a black one). It was later exchanged for a good "green" one.

I don't see any reason to waste money on shipping if we're not going to have success.

I suppose there is a small chance it would work, a very small chance.

Title: Re: [S] Mercury I/O Cable
Post by TM30 on 21.09.05 at 15:03:20
if your cap does not work, you will have to pay nothing! i will pay shipping for sending the cap to me, and i also pay shipping sending the cap back to you if it does not work.

i also got  today a L440GX+ Server Board, exactly the same as on original Mercury... I will try all!

Better off trying a BX first, every black brick I have tried on a GX starts... and shuts down after 1/2 second.

Title: Re: [S] Mercury I/O Cable
Post by TM30 on 21.09.05 at 16:10:19
what shuts down? the whole system? or only the mercury?

(remember, if my mercury works than with your stuff, you get a bulk black 200Sbi, functional of course. you pay shipping for the 200SBi...

IF my mercury does not work with your parts, you get this stuff back and I PAY shipping costs...)

i talked with a sever admin, he told me putting in a floppy with IDE drivers when NT setup starts (pressing F6...)

so i will try this first, today or tomorrow.

if this also doesnt i think we should try to download the image from your pc to mine... i would setup a ftp server on my pc, no problem.

finally i will try to get another GX+ Board if all the above doesnt work.

I will not give up my (cheap) mercury project ;)

He agreed to pay $30.00 for it, then said he needed my extra AAlchemy Module and promise me a 200SBi in trade.

It's all in the first page or two of this post.

DAMN IT i only get a blinking cursor after boot when i use your image... i bought this board as functional, and the seller had good feedback so i do not know where is the failure :(

can you tell me how these jumpers are set at the edge of the board (cmos clear i know, but the others nearby i do not know...)

and i need to know what bios settings you are using! screenshots of your bios would be cool

i only have one P3 550 installed, perhaps this is it? and i only have a IDE HDD, not a SCSI one!

gamma, i really want to complete this deal, i wanna know if i can get my merc working, if i will get it working you get your 200SBi, i promise. if not, youre getting your stuff back also as promised.

1) Try setting it up with Windows 2000 first to verify it's working, The 2000 disc has built in SCSI drivers and will work with no problem for board testing.

2) A second CPU is required or a CPU terminator card. You CAN use a second but slower CPU in the other slot, the motherboard will either disable one CPU or throttle down the faster CPU to the slower CPU speed.

One problem at a time!

Installing 2000 you can verify if the board and CPU combo is working, once the board is functioning wipe the hard drive then ghost the merc image on.

sorry, but i have to say it again: damn it  ;D

formatting drive was okay, copying files from installation CD to hdd too, but after restarting it says :

NTLDR is missing

Press STRG+ALT+DEL to restart

AND i also notice 2 failures which occur shortly after bios initiation:

ERROR: 8110 Server Management Interface failed to function
            8112: BMC in Update Mode

what the heck?

Are you running a SCSI drive? make sure it's terminated and make sure server managment is off in bios.

also reset configuration data in bios.

NT/Win2K probably isn't too happy about an unterminated CPU slot.

Plug this in and let us know if it takes care of your "NT Loader" error. It should have came with your motherboard (CPU terninator) for running 1 CPU.

Are you using a 40 pin IDE or a 80 Ultra ATA cable?

Is there anything else on the IDE bus (cable)?

Check the strapping on the drive Master/Slave/Cable Select.

Try another drive. Try another cable.

What is the BIOS version on the MB, Maybe it can't detect you drive correctly (newer larger drive possibly too large)?

I think it's a hardware issue. Keep the same motherboard in and lets start swapping out some drives cable and stuff. Put the drive on the bus by itself (CDrom on the secondary IDE).

Sorry for all the questions. I trying to get a feel for what's going on. Some of the question are pretty basic but it helps me visualize the situation.

i use an 80pin cable for the hdd and a 40pin for the cdrom

both devices set as master, both have a seperate ide channel

bios version i have to check

Should make no difference as the GX chipset is ATA-33.

Might not hurt going to the 40 strand cable for the HD though to be safe.

8GB Seagate

Title: Re: [S] Mercury I/O Cable

Should be no problem there ???

If I were you, I would use http://www.mbhs.edu/~jaosborn/boot98se.exe Boot from it and run Fdisk and delete all partitions then create 2 partitions both using FAT 16 (say no to large disk support) C: = 2GB, D: = 2 GB. then install Win98SE to the C: Then install Windows NT4 to the D: This will automatically create a "Dual Boot" system.

We have to get NT4 or Win2K on this machine if you ever want the Mercury sub-System to function.

There should be no issues with the image. I have dual SCSI drives in my mercury drive 0 is the OS and everything else, games, demos, and what not. Drive 1 is strictly for back-up. I have images only on that drive.

When I was tasked with making a smaller image for you, I created a current image of drive 0. Then I deleted all unneccessary files and programs from drive 0. Then I rebooted to make sure it would boot okay. Then I made an image drive 0 and named it Mercury.gho Then I restored my original image "Ghost.gho" and rebooted. Everything was great. Then I restored Mercury.gho and I had your image back on re-boot. NT4 with Mercury drivers, no games or demos and such. Then I transfered your image Mercury.gho from the D: drive, through the network to my laptop and contacted you to let you know it was ready for transfer.

Finally, I restore Ghost.gho back onto drive 0. A few days later I successfully transfer Mercury.gho to you through MSN Messenger. Followed by emailing you a copy of Norton Ghost 2003 with instructions on how to restore the image.

That's right. I did send a image to you. You wanted all the Q3D programs, Demos, and such.

If the image can restore on my machine, the image is good.

Your welcome to do and integrity check on the image itself. There's nothing wrong with the image. I spent quite a bit of time creating and testing it for you.

Just checking in with you to see how it went over the weekend. I ran across some pics back in the early days before I acquired a Mercury Case and was building a "Mercury on a Budget". I thought you might enjoy...

Did the new motherboard do the trick :D

Nice Gamma742, I like the Fairchild A10-A Thunderbolt II also known as the Warthog :)

What is the name of that Flight Simulator, I do see Open GVS but I suppose that that's alogo like Wicked 3D uses hehe.

Does that Simulator also run well on the V6K as well with FSAA x8 @ 1024 x 768 x 16 in Glide?

That brick DNF as a brick. I returned it for a green one. I had the green one in there for awhile before I bought a Mercury case, that is the correct gx motherboard. I didn't take any pictures of the green one in there. I was mainly documenting the case mod (3 fans with fan bus switches) I did enjoy the case modding but once I found an opportunity on a Mercury case, the thrill was gone :-/

Good Luck and Godspeed on your Mercury Project this weekend ;)

Yes. 2.1 or something like that...

NTFS will do better but I'm trying to get 98SE on there and 98SE won't work on NTFS.

NT4 doesn't like FAT32. I'm trying to keep both OS's happy.

Both OS's can agree on FAT16.

Are you having any luck?

No no...  No hard feelings. I feel sad for TM30. I believe he truly wanted to get his Mercury working. This is no easy task. I did everything possible to support him (want some drama, read the post). He may have lost interest. Donno.. I know that when I had a Mercury sub-System, I had a burning desire to get the thing working. I thought about nothing else (3dfx wise) until I was successful. I was thankful to Gary and Oscar for their support during the project. My only regret was that I sold it to Patience. Sure, I own another one that I bought from Logical Madness but it's not the same. The one I sold to Patience, I built that one from scratch. LM's machine was a turn-key purchase. It's kind of like the difference between buying a AlienWare or building your own Killer Gaming Machine. Some think I'm crazy and there's probably enough evidence to support that. Pride of ownership, Build it yourself ;)

Don't worry, my Packages into the US with standard German postal services took anywhere upto 45 days.
Unfortunately that's normal (unless Air Mail is used, but over here that costs both arms and both legs for light equipment, doing it with heavier stuff is as good as impossible :P )

"Deutsche Post" doesn't even offer Tracking for private customers (including that costs about the remaining body parts)

Good news is, that (eventually) everything always arrived in good condition.

heh I surely hope not , hmm time that we got out PyroGX's and look for the thing our selves ;) My Fusion Canons are ready are yours too?  ;D 8)

and oh I must mention something also I won ebay auction from someone in Berlin and first it were 3  Vintage Dino-Riders fully boxed from 1990 for about 147 euro's and I let that be shipped via Deutsche Post onroad like Parcel post and that took about 12 days which is indeed some what on the slow side. and the next thing I bought from there was a Dino-Riders Deinonycus Boxed never used from 1985 for 120 euro's and I let that get shipped by air and that took only 5 days so to USA it would take at least 12 days and no longer she aka Petra the seller said that her self.

Anyways 45 days is very bad by thinking the package is indeed lost and in a place where it should not be...

I sense that something strange has happened

@ Gamma742 That ship is that a real photo or some photoshop art? Man just imagine :X damn scary man. :P or maybe fun like White Water Kayakking ;D
