Can anyone tell me when the Quantum3D 50SB was announced?
07.01.09 at 12:33:30

Just wondering if there are any solid dates when it was announced, and when it was released? I know both dates are somewhere in 1996, but what month?

I can't find any news articles on it online.

Thanks.

The PCB dates are xx96 but Q3D wasn't established as company until  March 97. The first cards were probably sold/given away as demo prototypes by 3dfx itself.
Just my 2 cents on the matter.

True, but wasn't Quantum3D an internal division of 3dfx?

That's why it says 3dfx Obsidian on the board right? They were full retail these cards, not demo boards.

Yes Q3D was born from within 3dfx. The question remains how did they sell the cards until the actual launch of Q3D as separate company. During that time they mostly relied on partners for the majority of customers and probably only a few were supplied directly with Obsidian cards that have the 3dfx stamp on them that's why i said demo boards. This is due to the fact that they were chip manufactures and did not have large scale factories where to produce these cards.
This was one of the reasons they bought STB for factories and a way into the retail market.
After the launch of Q3D maybe there was a relaunch under the new company name with new Box design but for a niche market where high performance 3d cards were required and price was not an issue.
With the X-series cards they had a try at the retail market but could not compete because of their high prices and tough market conditions.
Again my view on the matter.

No- Quantum3d was a spin off because board partners like Diamond and Orchid were uncomfortable with 3dfx selling boards.

3dfx would always have the advantage you see, so Quatum3d would just do the arcade and mil-sim market (high end) and 3dfx would just make chips.

Yea, I didn't mean Quantum3D as the company, but the people that worked at 3Dfx were like an internal division that handled the Obsidian range, (Before March 1997) and those people later, went to work under the company name Quantum3D (after March 1997)?

So let me get this straight. Before March 1997 Obsidian was a product group owned by 3Dfx

And 3Dfx sold the Obsidian product group to the market, but Diamond and Orchid weren't comfortable with that, so Quantum3D started selling the Obsidians?

So between 3Dfx initially selling the Obsidian cards, to 31 March 1997, 3Dfx were in fact selling Obsidian boards, ie. the 50SB boards, and after the 31 March 1997, Quantum3D started selling them, and developing the multi chip design further to the 100SB boards, is that correct?

So when did 3Dfx announce the original Obsidian range to the public? That must have happened some time before Quantum3D spun off then?

In the timeline on your website, it says this :

Quote:
April 8, 1997- 3Dfx & Quantum3D announce strategic relationship. Quantum3D will enter the market as the sole distributor of 3Dfx's Obsidian GraphicsTM family of realtime 3D graphics accelerator boards which have been shipping commercially since last summer.

Is there more specific info on when the obsidians were shipping? Like a month? And perhaps an announce date?

Look for arcade announcments, that where 3dfx's first sales were.

Home Run Derby was the first.

That's May 16th, 1996. Great, thank you for your help Gary, it always was a bit vague in my head how the Obsidian story worked before Quantum3D spun off.

Were the Obsidian 50SB boards before the Quantum3D spin off solely targeted for the arcade market? Or was it only when Quantum3D in 1997 targeted the retail market that they were sold boxed for the PC?

I think that 3dfx at the time didn't consider sales in the retail market due to the expense of ram.

That pretty much leaves workstation, arcade amd mil-sim as your only markets.

3dfx never had any great drivers that I know of for workstation applications so that only leaves mil-sim and arcade.

Heck, GLQuake required a mini driver so I suspect retail sales caught 3dfx by surprise. I'm sure they wished for it but didn't figure it would happen like it did.
