Motherboard? ........
21.07.07 at 06:43:21

Two gaming machines.... well kind of. Second box inherited the X850 Pro ATI card I bought last year, along with the 500 watt P/S. Thing reboots every time I play a game, doesn't matter what game, any game. The power supply and the vid card came out of a working box, no problems. I have put the X850 into my main box (the one that is now housing the X1950 Pro) and no problems what so ever.

The second box is running a everything on a Epox 8kra2i. I bought it off ebay as I heard they are one of the better boards out there. I've had problems with the RAID setup ever since I bought it. After not hooking it up with raid, it was working just fine..... with a 430 watt and a X800GTO card in it. Since putting in the bigger power supply that did work out of the other box and the upgraded video card (X850 Pro), nothing else has changed.

Ever since the upgrade however, it will not work. Not after a fresh load of XP, not after updates to the drivers (and down grades).

My only opinion here is that the mother board does NOT like the vid card for some reason.

Video card works just fine in my main box. Any ideas here because it's harder then a witches heart to find a working socket A board now adays. Especially one that is new.

X800GTO works fine after reinstalling the 7.7 drivers, so what is the problem with the X850 Pro??

Check your psu's rails in both idle and load states with a multimeter.

Try tinkering with some of the AGP settings in the bios?

I'm running a x850 on an Intel 848 board with a 2.8C and a quality 450 watt power supply with no problems.

Checking the rails might give you an idea if the PS is an issue or not, perhaps a software monitor?

Cool, thanks guys. I'll take a look at the psu.

Oh, and thanks Gary, I'll take a look at the bios as well. Went through a couple of different times taking off the fast writes and stuff, but maybe I missed something.

I use the EVEREST as it will display power and temp readings live, there are others out there though.

Indeed, I prefer Speedfan which can be found on http://www.almico.com Smiley. Works fine, too. Doesn't give you 'information' about a chipset (or whatsoever) itself but that's where we aren't interested in at the moment. (And I suppose you already know what kind of motherboard you have Tongue)

I'm at work right now, didn't have a chance to post while I was at home. The 12volt rail is coming up at 11.60 so I"m not quite sure if that is out of spec or not. Electricity is not my greatest talent.

As far as pc spec and watching heat and what not, I've been using PC Wizard 2007 (very similiar to Everest but since Everest isn't updating the free version any more I found this which is also free...) link is here, http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php

I also use Speedfan as well.

Anyway, that's about it. I'll have to post more when I get home.

Use a multimeter. Software is pure junk in a matter of static values or relative drops or peaks. They take values from onboard sensors. Very bad sensors with low poling interval and sometime preposterous calculations. A well calibrated multimeter can reveal amazing things Smiley

Just be careful WHERE you stick those multimeter probes when the machine is switched on. Wink
