Title: **ENDED** [GA] Damaged V5 5500 PCI Post by Renner on 23.01.06 at 07:09:31
[GA] = Give Away
I have a Voodoo 5 5500 PCI, Rev. A1 3100, Hyundai HY57V653220B 0032A TC-6 memory (I think that's only 6ns, not 5.5), that has had two capacitors forcibly removed from the PCB. As such, it is NON-FUNCTIONAL at present. There are high-resolution pictures of the exact damage in this thread. The card was 100% operational before the damage was done. Hank says the missing capacitors are 0.1uF ceramic, size 0406. There is also a scrape across the top of several traces, which may or may not be a problem. It was suggested in that other thread that if they ARE damaged, they could be repaired with a conductive pen. I don't have the skills or equipment to do these repairs, and I've got another working 5500 PCI that I've successfully removed the stock coolers from, so I'd rather give the damaged card to someone else who thinks they can fix it. The card is exactly as shown in the pictures, except I've cleaned up the second VSA-100 chip. I have the cleaned-up stock heatsinks and fans as well if needed. If you want it, you pay shipping (from Canada, method is your choice) and nothing more. |

Cool, how much is shipping to Luxembourg (the cheapest if possible)?
:P |
Title: Re: [GA] Damaged V5 5500 PCI Post by paulpsomiadis on 23.01.06 at 14:18:08
I'm also interested... ;)
...how much is shipping to the U.K.? ??? |
Title: Re: [GA] Damaged V5 5500 PCI Post by Renner on 23.01.06 at 19:37:47
OK, here's what it'll cost me to ship to either location (Luxembourg or U.K.):
By air, $45 CAD (~22 GBP, ~32 EUR). Approx. 6-10 business days. By surface, $20 CAD (~10 GBP, ~14.5 EUR). Approx. 4-6 weeks. Both modes have insurance coverage up to $100 CAD included "free". I plan to ship the card in the original retail packaging since those boxes offer pretty good protection. It costs just as much to ship a somewhat smaller box, anyway. Payment would be through PayPal in CAD. I don't really want to start taking bids, so if you're both still interested at the costs I quoted, can you work it out between yourselves? |
Title: Re: [GA] Damaged V5 5500 PCI Post by LuxKiller65 on 24.01.06 at 08:37:25
Thanks, I'm interested but have not much left in my PayPal address. If you can ship for cheaper uninsured maybe, I'll take it for sure.
|
Title: Re: [GA] Damaged V5 5500 PCI Post by paulpsomiadis on 24.01.06 at 21:01:07
That would be a fine price...but you'll have to wait about a week or so until I get my paycheck (I'm paid fortnightly). ;)
I'll post again when I have the cash... ;D |
Title: Re: [GA] Damaged V5 5500 PCI Post by Renner on 25.01.06 at 05:26:05
That's the absolute cheapest I can ship it to Europe, unfortunately. As I noted, the $100 insurance coverage is included in the base shipping cost -- you can't "opt out". Over $100 declared value has optional added-cost insurance. Sorry, out of my hands...
:( Paul, I'll keep an eye on this thread. Aside: PayPal is SO annoying. Useful, but annoying. I've had a PayPal account for about 5 years now with only a credit card listed with them, and finally ran up against the $1000 USD spending limit for an unverified account. I can't stand the thought of signing an everyday-use bank account with a service like PayPal, so I finally opened a new account at a strange bank and signed it up under a totally new PayPal account. At least this way there's some separation between my real finances and what PayPal can see/touch. >:( |

Title: Re: [GA] Damaged V5 5500 PCI Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 28.01.06 at 16:27:33
45 US Dollars is rediculous for a dead single card, When I shipped my 11 cards to Habbs I did that under Priority which is an insured express way and a fast way and the package was between 500 and 1500 grams aand it only costed me 22 euro's but foor 11 cards and no one.
so for one card you would only pay 12 Euro's for Express Postal services not 38 Euro's :-X |

He stated Canadian funds not US. And for fast air shipping overseas, it's pretty reasonable. |

oh okay then it's okay hehe I was kinda shocked couse of the number , I had the idea that Canadian Dollars had the same money value as American Dollars :)

Unfortunately I don't get to set Canada Post's shipping rates.
I used the online rate calculator first, to see what the options were. The International Small Packet Surface method was the cheapest available, and the Air mode for the same service was about double. Then to double-check, I took the box into my post office and asked how much to ship it by either method to the UK or Luxembourg. The numbers you see are rounded to the nearest dollar (CAD), which I don't think is unreasonable. For reference, today's exchange rate puts the Canadian dollar at $0.8725 US. If it can indeed be repaired, this is a pretty damn good deal for a 5500 PCI. |

yeah true there heh , I was alittle confused with the American Dollars, but now I understand.

Title: Re: [GA] Damaged V5 5500 PCI Post by gamma742 on 29.01.06 at 04:18:27
Another thought. It cost more to ship from Canada to the US than from the US to Canada. Donno why, but that's how it is. Or so I've been told.

Title: Re: [GA] Damaged V5 5500 PCI Post by paulpsomiadis on 29.01.06 at 16:33:30
I'll DEFINATELY be buying the card at the end of this week... 8)
...shouldn't pose too much of a problem to repair the card when it arrives as I have another dead V5 lying around for spare parts! ;) |
Title: Re: [GA] Damaged V5 5500 PCI Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 29.01.06 at 16:38:01
hmm dunno about repair'n cards hehe the components are small and need to be placed securely with extreme care, since it's a non working card still nice for Display hehe to show people what a 5500 PCI Is :)
There are more auctions on ebay with 5500 PCI's it's not that they are that rare at all, If you need a working one Paul I'll be wishing to give you an url ;) |
Title: Re: [GA] Damaged V5 5500 PCI Post by Renner on 30.01.06 at 17:30:31
Listen:
I told you already that Paul has dibs on it, because he called it before you. Since I'm not asking for bids and only want to cover the shipping cost, it's first come, first serve. I'm not going to give it to someone else under the table just because they get the money to me a day sooner. Furthermore, I couldn't give you a shipping quote over the weekend. Canada Post's online rate calculator isn't always accurate with respect to what I actually have to pay at the post office (it was low by $10 CAD on the overseas quotes). The post office here is NOT open on the weekends, and I have to make a 25 km round trip to get there on most weekdays. In other words, back the hell off. |

I was refering to Obi about the V5 on eBay so STFU >:( |

Paul, PM me when you're ready for the card. "Auction" is ended. |

;D Don't forget to show us pics of that card Paul, if you gonna do something artistic with it! |
Title: Re: **ENDED** [GA] Damaged V5 5500 PCI Post by paulpsomiadis on 03.02.06 at 23:30:34
Okay, I have the cash - so negotiations are underway... :D
...assuming all goes well and the repairs 'revive' the V5500, I think I'll opt for the silent approach and go with two Zalman heatsinks... ;D ...plans remain open though, as I'm in no hurry and will wait for SURFACE shipping (gives me time to think what I want to do with the card) ;) |
Title: Re: **ENDED** [GA] Damaged V5 5500 PCI Post by Renner on 04.02.06 at 00:32:20
I went with the 32mm Zalmans on my Mac edition 5500, and they seem to work pretty well... but I also have a 120mm Panaflo fan blowing down the length of the card. There's lots of airflow over the sinks, and it's still almost silent (all you can hear is a whisper of air movement).
I posted some pictures in this thread, if you're interested. I also considered using a pair of copper Vantec Iceberq chipset coolers. I have one of these on a northbridge chip and it's quite effective, but with the 5000 rpm fan it's relatively noisy. I suspect they would seriously outperform the stock coolers at similar noise levels, though, and they wouldn't overflow into a second PCI slot. They also look damn sexy. Put some of these babies on the RAM, and you'd have the nicest-looking 5500 ever. Of course, all that would set you back about £50... ;D |
Title: Re: **ENDED** [GA] Damaged V5 5500 PCI Post by paulpsomiadis on 05.02.06 at 02:53:47
Hmm...I'd like to see your pictures, bou could you provide SMALLER versions (800x600) as 3MB is HUGE for any picture! :D
Vantec coolers are sexy indeed...but WAY too noisy! :( NICE RAMsinks...drool! ;D P.S. - cash sent, card bought! |
Title: Re: **ENDED** [GA] Damaged V5 5500 PCI Post by Renner on 05.02.06 at 04:11:51
Well, I scaled 'em down to 1MB each... hope that's enough. ;D

Hmmm... file must have been damaged during upload. I've been having some trouble with my connection, so it might have been resumed and got messed up.
Fixed now. |
Title: Re: **ENDED** [GA] Damaged V5 5500 PCI Post by paulpsomiadis on 08.02.06 at 23:47:30
Hmm...apparently surface mail from Canada to the U.K. is MUCH faster than from U.S.A. to U.K.
CAN -> U.K. = 1 month (4 weeks) U.S.A. -> U.K. = 2 months and a week (9 weeks) Crikey! A bit of a difference... Anyhow, I'll let you all know when the card shows up... (oh and I got the mail turnover times from experience, as I also collect Laserdiscs from U.S.A. and CAN) |
