So how does D2X-XL Look compare to D2_3dfx ??

And does it have mouse support in the game ??

I play D1X as it has mouse support in the game but D1_3dfx although looks superior, lacks mouse support :'(

well I haven't tried it yet I was surprized to find it and yes it is better I think as I read this:

D2X-XL fixes virtually all bugs found in D2X 0.2.6 and adds a plethora of new features. Here are some of the more prominent additions:

   * Mouse control working properly, improved and dual joystick support
   * Improved support for playing Descent 1 missions
   * Fully implemented capture the flag game mode
   * Entropy multiplayer game mode similar to the one found in Descent 3
   * UDP/IP communication and tracker support
   * All cockpit styles available in all screen resolutions
   * Colored lighting, cameras and monitors, in-level teleports, speed boosts (wind tunnels)
   * Increased number of cubes, walls, triggers and objects
   * Support for environment areas (sky boxes)
   * Triggers attached to robots

With our V6K's hehe FSAA x8 should look sweet in OpenGL as well there is even Cockpit Modes in all reso's  :P :P :P

The Descent Bulletin Board has a section of their forum devoted to D2X-XL if you have questions, suggestions or bug reports:

http://dbb.vonclan.net/

The author's username in the forum is Diedel.  He has created Mac and Linux ports of D2X-XL as well.

what about Win2K Pro and WinXP Pro?

Would I need an original version of Descent2 and then instal the addon or can I download the addon and then play the game right away?

hehe i just came accros these wonderfull things so that is why I posted them only I never used them hehe

I use Win98 SE for all of my gaming, so I am not really in a position to say anything about Win2K or WinXP compatibility.  Diedel's installation page (http://www.descent2.de/d2x-install.html) does indicate that you have to have the original D2 installed in order for D2X-XL to function.

The Descent Bulletin Board probably has the answer to your questions about Win2K and WinXP, if the documentation dosen't address this specifically.  You can do searches on that board just as you can on this board.

hehe thanx :)

I can always Install Win98SE on my second HDD not such a problem and thanx again for your help :)

Well this week I'll be testing the renewed Descent2 on the Voodoo5 5500 AGP with 4x FSAA for the meantime :) My Win98SE system has been upgraded from the PII MMX 350 to an AthlonXP Barton 2600+, ASUS A7V333-R & 512MB PC3200 @ PC-2700, so it's time to play around a bit more, the other system the Thoroughbred 2700+ is waiting for it's new EPoX EP-8K5A2 mobo then I can test the 6K in Renewed Descent2 also :)

when the new board arrives I will test it on the Voodoo5 6000 AGP with FSAA x8 ;D but I'm not sure if the difference is visable between FSAA x4 and FSAA x8.

On my V5 5500 AGP in heavy battle in D3 with all the eye candy turned on @ 1024 X 786 X 16 w/FSAA X 4 it would start to chop "in heavy battle". That doesn't happen on the V6K 8) Don't use 8 X FSAA as I'm too busy eradicating the mines to look at the difference (nice for screenies though).

D2X-XL has been built for Win32. Though it should run Win98, in case of problems I recommend using the original D2, or d2_3dfx if you own a 3dfx card.

You need to original game data for D2X-XL, as it only replaces the executable.

If you know of a OpenGL ICD for the V5 that works properly with D2X-XL, would please give me a link to it? There is a guy who has a V5, but cannot run D2X-XL with his current driver.

If you get D2X-XL, don't miss all the great D2 missions I have gathered on my D2 site, and those I have built myself (there are a few utilizing all the new D2X-XL features). See the side menu for the various levels sections.

well I got it working on my Voodoo5 5500 AGP 64MB with the latest Raziel64 Evolution Driver and MesaFX 6.2.0.2 for the OpenGL32.dll

but it seems that when I start or finnish a game the cutscenes won't run instead if running them the games moves me directly back to Windows desktop.

here my system config:

AMD AthlonXL barton 2600+
ASUS A7V333-R Rev 1.04
1x 512Mb PC-2700 Samsung Original

Windows 98SE NL + Unofficial Sefvice PAck 2.03.

here the english one, which is version 2.1a:
http://download.freewarefiles.com/files/sesp21a-en.exe
Direct X 9.0c

I used this version of D2X on my Descent2 1.0
http://www.descent2.de/resources/d2x-xl-w32-1.5.91.zip

anyways is there something I did wrong maybe? I also used the High settings for the movie quallity, I gave that a go also with and without High settings also by enableing and disabling the undertitile for the films.

That didn't help either. What does work is when I play a movie in the menu it's self, but even when I create a new piolt and I want to start a new single player game the games won't start instead I land in the Windows desktop.

Title: Re: Great news for Descent fans!!!!

The only thing I would have proposed is to turn high movie quality off (on does some extra filtering not available on older gfx cards), but if you tried that already, all you can do is to specify '-nomovies' in d2x.ini to skip the movies altogether and be able to play.

Ummm ... you are using Win98? That might cause problems, too.

Thanks for the links. :)

Title: Re: Great news for Descent fans!!!!
Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 17.01.06 at 18:11:35
well I'm using Win98SE because that is the most advised Operating system for 3dfx cards for the best peformance since Descent2 won't run inder 2K neither XP which is the main problem here also. It won't install either.

And yes I found something turned off in your d2x.ini file.

"nomovies 1" was your setting I changed that to "nomovies 0" ;)

Well now when I start a new game I see the movie run but after that it returs to the desktop and when I finish my old saved game I see the PyroGX scene fly out of the mine with the explosions in the back ground and after that I get the scoreboard after that I press enter and I return also back to my Windows Desktop.

but saved games can be launched without probs only when you finish them they won't load the other missions that come after it

Title: Re: Great news for Descent fans!!!!
Post by karx11erx on 17.01.06 at 22:34:21
Try '-nomovies 2' or just '-nomovies'.

And read the page about the D2X-XL switches. ;)

You could also use d2_3dfx, but then you won't have UDP/IP multiplayer and all the other gimmicks ... ::)

Btw, I recommend accessing the Descent BB via http://www.descentbb.net/index.php, because otherwise you may run into problems with the login info the forum stores in cookies.

well hehe as a 3dfx card tester and fan programming isn't my thing but hey I'll give it a shot that's what we're here for :)

within a few days I'll test it on the Voodoo5 5000 AGP and Voodoo5 6000 AGP Prototypes as Well ;D that is gonna be great fun :)

FSAA x8 on the 6000 and FSAA x4 on the smallest Voodoo5 in the world :) well I'll keep you updated on that.

hmm is there a way to make Screenshots? because If I use the Printscreen key I get a corrupted picture when I paste the captured screen in MS Paint, unless there is another way like in Unreal Tournament, where you press F9 and open the captures with Windows Imaging hehe.

well I tested the nomovies without a number and no effect and with 0 I get the intro movie after that I get in the main menu then I start a new game can also choose start a new single player game well I ashume that is the same thingy :)

well the intro of the level plays after that I get trown back to windows.

with the nomovies 1 setting I get no movies but also same problem i get trown back to windows.

anyways I'll see what that Descent BB can do, sorry it's all to o new for me hehe normally I like play'n around in Descent 1 , 2 and 3 in old style hehe D3's good look'n with FSAA x4 though @ 1024 x 768 x 16 in Glide, only also the same prob with the screenshots. Hehe the games are from the same bloke that made them hehe.

Well I just became a member of Descent BB hehe might as well post there also when the time comes :)

well I found out that D2X-XL does ot work great with 16:10 Wide screen aspect ratio's sad to say, yet wide screens with aspect ratio's of 16:9 is not a problem, since that my laptop has a 16:10 aspect ratio screen with an ATi M18 the game will not cope properly with the Original ATi drivers as original Ati Mobile drivers as the Omega Drivers, it's a total no go .

as for the Voodoo5 5500 PCI under XP pro, it ran quite well @ 1024 x 768 x32 + FSAA x4 :) looks very nice, only when proceeding to the next game level Descent2 crashed. so that's a nogo also. anyways like I said XP isn't a great OS for 3dfx cards as wel all know 98SE is still the best OS for 3dfx cards period.

The Only thing that really worked was on the XFX GeForce 6800GT 256MB, About ATi GFX cards I'm not so sure of since that the M18 was a nogo with the 16:10 Wide screen TFT failed under WinXP Home. end of Februari my ATi Radeon X850XT PE AGP will arrive and I am willing to test that in the Dual Opteron system where the 6800GT is located.

here a nice screenie with the 6800GT :)

Man The Game looks like new the Best part of the Descent series totally Revamped!
and here a screeny of the same settings but then with Descent First Strke aka Descent 1 :)
http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/albums/album90/PyroGX_in_OpenGL_Descent1.thumb.jpg

really Descent 1 has an advantage no Thief Bots ;D

Only what is noticable is that the Descent2 PyroGX cockpit was also used for the D2X-XL for Descent1 ;D LoL

I can't get the movies to play at all. If I launch Descent2 for Windows, it works fine. With this mod, no movies. The games works great but I can't get the intro or the cut scene movies to work. I've tried options 0 1 & 2. No luck ???

Title: Re: Great news for Descent fans!!!!

well here comes the Bollucks bad news.

It only seems to work under WinXP with an Nvidia card a G*yForce card sad to say, dunno about the Raddies though I will be doing that under Windows 2000 later this week.

Even My MR9800 Fails with it under XP Home as well the 16 : 10 Aspected ratios arn't supported that well that are reso's like  1280 x 800 or 1920 x 1200 and so on.

It's more nvidiot based I'm afraid to say  :-/ :-/ so rather bollocks to me.

Title: Re: Great news for Descent fans!!!!
Post by gamma742 on 06.03.06 at 05:21:27
Well since I don't own an nV card so I guess I won't be seeing the intro/cut-scene/end movies.

No worries! I did the typical install that leave the movies on the CD. I found out that this mod ends the need for the CD to be in the drive to launch the game ;D

That in itself makes me happy. I hate to always swap out CDs every time I want to play another game.

My next step is to merge D1 into the game so that I can play the original Descent on this mod/engine.

Have you done this yet? It looks like you just copy everything into the \Descent2 directory except the mission/level files which go into the \Descent\Missions directory.

Title: Re: Great news for Descent fans!!!!

yeaps the Cockpit of Descent2 is used with Descent 1 with this mod too which is a shame, the PyroGL that is has no panel for the Afterburner which can be seen on the left in the cockpit of the PyroGX seen in Descent2 ;)

Anyways within 12 days I'll test it on my Brand New Built and Boxed by ATI Radeon X850XT Platinum Edition AGP :) and hopefully that should do well with FSAA x6T3 and AF x16 :)

That should give Descent 1 and 2 a brand new life also which will look totally revamped  ;D ;D ;D We don't need NV to survice ATi and 3dfx will do fine ;)
