It's a voodoo5 with 128mb ?
Or is something else ? Glad to see that you are working on a new project :) |

Guess the picture file name kind of spoiled the teaser...

Not just the filename, I read the text in the picture which also mentions Voodoo5 5500 and 128MiB ;)

Hi Komponent,
Good to see you here again. Nice work on this project that we have been waiting for a while now. Perhaps you can share with us some high quality pictures of the rework spots and resistor values so we can replicate this on our cards. For testing the card at full potential you should get a mainboard with PCI-X slots as the card will run at 66Mhz bus speed and thus will not be a bottleneck as with the PCI33 slot. Keep up the good work, G1nX |
Title: Re: Finaly! Voodoo5 PCI mod to 128Mb The Ugly Duckling Post by Komponent on 31.03.13 at 15:30:50
Was there ever an instance when I did not share the informations on how to replicate the mods I've discovered?
Was trying to borrow a camera better than that on my phone, yet no luck here, so if one could help by uploading hi-res pics of the front and back of a V5 pci I'll do my part. No BIOS hack is required and the mod is fairly similar to that of a V5 agp. I wonder what to do next; I like the challenge of venturing into unknown but, though I have some ideas, I have not chosen a new mod to tackle, so I'm opened to suggestions... |

Maybe you could increase the RAM on a Voodoo2?
Don't know about the framebuffer, but the TMU's support up to 16MiB each. |

Congrats to this amazing work :) Well, you could help me on the memory modification I was planning to do for Obi s Voodoo 5 Mac. Total memory of 256MB :) You proved that a single V4 can handle 128MB, so 256MB should be possible. There are two ways in my mind: 1) get memory with a higher density (32MB per chip) -> ISSI IS42S32800D-6TL 2) stack 16MB modules and wire CS0 and CS1 to VSA100. About that Voodoo 2 with total of 20MB memory, I've got a card from exxe with 1MB EDO ram, but it doesn't work. I've resoldered original memory, but the card still won't work -> card is dead. Now I've got still the memory left over for the 20MB project, but I'm pretty sure the strapping needs to be done right. The problem, I don't have any document on the TMUs :( So how about doing a joint venture :D 8-) |

some ideas:
- voodoo5 5500 agp4x - voodoo5 5500 with 256Mb - voodoo5 6000 with 256mb or even 512mb :) |
Title: Re: Finaly! Voodoo5 PCI mod to 128Mb The Ugly Duckling Post by Komponent on 31.03.13 at 19:01:45
@Loeschzwerg
AFAIK there are documented strapping configurations up to 16Mb chips for VSA100 but there are some combinations unassigned so if you have the chips you could try them. Stacking on the other hand should work in theory, but soldering would be a nightmare; I admit I don't believe I could solder piggybacked TSOP86 chips but if anyone can, it would be you. |

As long as you could provide diagrams and resistor values images are not strictly necessary although still useful (they can be added in any time) ;) So would be nice summarize your whole work, V4 and V5 projects too, in order to preserve informations. |

I just had this idea, but it depends on something. I know Voodoo 's can be used in SLI, but can Voodoo 4's or 5's? If yes, then what about a 128mb or even a suggested 256mb Voodoo 5500 in SLI?
Now my other idea was, could two cards be made into one? Hear me out. This might need the mentioned PCI-X slot but anyways, if they could be used in SLI, could they me hardwired together, or soldered at the pins instead of using a cable, then via some sort of dongle, maybe even pcisagp or if possible pci2pci-E, be made to use one slot? I know it sounds odd, but hey, if I am wrong I am wrong but it's just an idea. 2 cards working together. Would be neat, especially if you could extend the SLI to be able to link more than 2 cards, say 4 in SLI? I mean, how did they do the mercury brink right? It worked somehow. |
Title: Re: Finaly! Voodoo5 PCI mod to 128Mb The Ugly Duckling Post by Loeschzwerg on 01.04.13 at 14:45:29
@Komponent: Thx :)
@bucksavage: You might find the following thread interesting: http://www.falconfly.de/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1355402726/0 A hardware SLI setup is clearly the better solution, cause it doesn't stress the primary PCI bus, like a software solution will/would do. The problem, we would need to build a secondary PCI bus like used on Voodoo 5 6000 or the AAlchemy and this simply isn't possible, at least not without some very difficult and heavy modifications :( (rebuild a 6000 would be easier if you ask me) So I would go for the software SLI solution, but my skills in driver development are rather bad to none existent... |

I wonder though.....has anyone tried to make a brick module out of more modern voodoo cards, say V4k or V5k? And how exactly would you hook it into a pc? |
Title: Re: Finaly! Voodoo5 PCI mod to 128Mb The Ugly Duckling Post by osckhar on 02.04.13 at 12:12:48
@Komponent,
Excellent work mate! About V5 @256Mb: Same work as Komponent showed plus strapping ball A24 of both VSA-100 to enable second chiptset. Bios must recognize the card with double ram once added 32Mb per TSOP. Regards, Oscar. |

Not sure about that, I think that A24 will only be needed if piggyback two 16MB. Cause this would result in two chipsets, using 32MB is only one. |

Title: Re: Finaly! Voodoo5 PCI mod to 128Mb The Ugly Duckling Post by Loeschzwerg on 02.04.13 at 20:09:58
You are right and I will tell you why, the VSA100 on the V4 AGP does have wired CS0 and CS1 to all memory spots. To make use of the 4 free tsops you need A24 to activate "chip select".
But the V5 does only have 4 tsops per VSA100 and not 8, so it addresses only one memory chipset per VSA100. If we go for memory with 32MB per chip we don't need A24, because we don't need to select between two memory chipsets. If we are forced to go for the piggyback method, we need to wire CS0/CS1 (they aren't connected to both VSA100) and A24. |
Title: Re: Finaly! Voodoo5 PCI mod to 128Mb The Ugly Duckling Post by osckhar on 03.04.13 at 10:28:21
Ok, understood.
So, V4 128Mb mod is done via A24? I did not know it. I checked the Komponent's V4 mod and there was not nothing about A24 strapping but now I remember in such mod there was a file bios mod. Possibly there is enabled second chipset. Regards, Oscar. |

If we go for 32Mb per chip. We must play via strapping with: MD10/11/12/13/14 & AAD11/10/9/8/7 Trying to find the right set? Regards, Oscar. |
Title: Re: Finaly! Voodoo5 PCI mod to 128Mb The Ugly Duckling Post by Komponent on 03.04.13 at 15:06:24
A23, A15 and B15. Strapping is 4.7kohm to GND.

Title: Re: Finaly! Voodoo5 PCI mod to 128Mb The Ugly Duckling Post by Komponent on 04.04.13 at 18:59:50
I don't know if I was clear enough. To set the TSOP capacity a combination of A23, A15 and B15 strapped to GND with 4.7k or not is used. There are documented settings only up to 16Mb for chip but there are other combination unassigned.
They might mean something or not. Until someone tries we can't know for sure. For my personal opinion: BIOS and/or VSA100 might be limited to 64Mb per chipset (a total of max. 2). |
Title: Re: Finaly! Voodoo5 PCI mod to 128Mb The Ugly Duckling Post by Loeschzwerg on 04.04.13 at 19:55:58 Komponent wrote on 04.04.13 at 18:59:50:
Which would mean piggybacking is the only way. This would at least describe the mentioned 64MB per VSA100 (single chipset) in the spec sheets. |
Title: Re: Finaly! Voodoo5 PCI mod to 128Mb The Ugly Duckling Post by osckhar on 05.04.13 at 11:03:11
It means by the design of the V4 agp with 8 tsop forma can 'cheat' to the limitations of the card and 128Mb per card is possible. However adding 32Mb per chip in V5 card for his design the only 4 tsop per chip would not be possible to enable 128Mb per chip if it is not done via piggybacking, right?
Anyway, I will add 32Mb per chip and see what happens with set combination of A23, A15 and B15 strapped to GND with 4.7k. Regards, Oscar. |

Yes, that's what it could mean. But we can't say for sure unless someone tested it. If you try the 32MB way, I will go for piggybacking. Shared research :) |

However, I can disclose that I have no plans for 32Mb chips, nor for piggybacking 16Mb chips as these projects are in the best capable hands of Osckhar and Loeschzwerg and as all of us, can't wait to see positive results. For sure when I'll have some free time I will try to produce new 3dfx mods with the available resources, but, no worry, I'll keep you posted. |

Hi,
Here a V5 MAC versión with ISSI 32Mb per chip TSOP and updated last rev. chip VSA-100. The TSOP memory has been soldered pin by pin with a soldering iron since I prefer it than using an IR system with solder paste. It takes me more time but even so I prefer it. Clean work. Here some pictures. @komponent, A23, A15 and B15. Strapping is 4.7kohm to GND. Does it is same setting than used to 128Mb, right? I mean I must to follow same steps that you used for modding 128Mb and see what happens. Best regards, Oscar. |
Title: Re: Finally! Voodoo5PCI mod to 128Mb The Ugly Duckling Post by Komponent on 28.05.13 at 15:52:04
Nice :)
To be honest, I also solder RAM chips by hand. I would first fully replicate the 128Mb mod, then try only B15 (or next only A15) with 4.7k to GND. |

Hello,
I have tried to modify little bit the mod using the VIAS for connecting the wires and so not solder the wires directly on the pin chip ram and only using wires on the back of the card. So, looks the card once done the reworks. Sadly the card oes not work well. It has some artifacts. :( Card is showed with 128Mb bios. I thought the card would work ok even soldering the wires on the VIAS but perhaps those vias are interconnected with others points and for such reason card does not work well. What do you think? Regards, Oscar. |

:o It should really be quick to have it fixed that "oops".
After, if you find the strapping for 256mbit chips the start screen might not show 256Mb, but you will see this in Windows. The RAM is 6ns (166mhz)? I wonder how will it be overclocking as you took the effort to replace the GPUs. Can't wait for you to post more news on how this one goes! |

( 3dmark2001, return to castle wolfesntein, 3dmark2000, UT GOTY, 3dfx donnut demo ) Win XP - SFFT Alpha 48 - SFFT 1.5 - SFFT 1.6 - SFFT 1.7 - SFFT 1.8 - SFFT 1.9 - Koolsmokey - Amigamerlin R3.11 With all drivers and boards: When entering in the OS the screen is black. - Only with the original XP driver - is entering the OS, but the driver does not allow to start any application. Win7 - SFFT 1.9 - black screen when entering windows - Only with the original win7 driver - is entering the OS, but the driver does not allow to start any application. BUT.... there is a board witch surprises me : The Gigabyte 7VKML -chipset KT266 With this board the both cards are running excelent ! No problems in win98 & XP, with all the above mentioned drivers. I had only a xp1800+ CPU, so don't be amazed about the low scores :) Here some screenshots, using the SFFT 1.9 driver: No AA V5 AGP-64mb V5-AGP - 128mb V5-PCI - 64mb V5-PCI - 128mb 2xAA V5 AGP-64mb V5-AGP - 128mb V5-PCI - 64mb V5-PCI - 128mb 4xAA V5 AGP-64mb V5-AGP - 128mb V5-PCI - 64mb V5-PCI - 128mb Some nice shoots @4xAA : Btw - overclocking the cards with the VSA overclocking tool goes up to 188Mhz, after that display errors appear. |

Fantastic work, M14Radu! Thank you for taking alot of your time to do these tests and sorry you had the bad luck of having that number of incompatible motherboards. I only tested a few and had the chance that all of them worked just fine with modded cards at least under Win ME and with the two I have now perfect function with XP too. One day we should do a list with the other owners of modded cards.
The only missing thing to make your massive work complete would have been if you had at hand a 64Mb Voodoo5 PCI to benchmark that one too in the same configuration. Funny that the 33Mhz speed is such a bottleneck and it takes 4x FSAA for the Mac Voodoo5 to really show its teeth and overpass the 64Mb Voodoo5 >:( |

Hi,
I am using a EPOX 8K5A2+ under Win98SE reference driver and card works perfect. I wanted to see if really is added the extra ram. I tried Quake3 4xFSAA 1280x1024 and without problems. A normal V5 cant handle it. Quake 3 did not take advantage from the extra ram since with 128/64Mb card I got same FPS. @Radu, can you confirm it? Best regards, Oscar. |

Looking good! Found a little time to play with the resistors? Good job!

Did you give up the idea to use VIAS?

Yupe, next week. :) Thanks for words! goriath wrote on 08.06.13 at 14:25:06:
Nope, the problem is the PIN21 has not track and therefore not VIAS. :( Regards, Oscar. |

@Radu,
Nothing special. Normal install. About 256Mb project- At the moment not luck. This afternoon I tried all the combination possible and I got 8/16/32/64/128Mb but not 256Mb. :'( Regards, Oscar. |

What Komponent and I already thought, 128MB per VSA100 only possible when used all chipset banks. This means 2 chipsets with each 4 banks. The Voodoo 5 5500 only has 4 banks per VSA100.

I tested the 128 moded cards with a MSI KT3 Ultra and both moded card are running excellent !
I was amazed ! No black screen when entering in the XP. No problems. No errors. No freezes. I used Amigamerlin & SFFT drivers without an issue ! Seems that the problem appears with the MSI KT3 Ultra2 Mobos only. I will take the NB cooler down, to see and compare the KT333 chip revisions....I suspect that here is the difference :) |

Just noticed that both MSI KT3 Ultra and MSI KT3 Ultra2 have the same BIOS revisions binaries available. Maybe this is a chance narrow down what causes the XP incompatibility of 128Mb modded Voodoo5 cards on some motherboards.
If I understand correctly, you have both motherboards available? On Ultra2 you get loadind XP to black screen and on Ultra you have no problems? What BIOS revisions are you running on each one? If they are different, I would try flashing the Ultra2 with the version that currently runs on Ultra and see if that changes anything. Hope you'll have soon some time to check on that and share the results. |

Yes, its corect.
I use the same bios version. 5.07 on both motherboards, even swap the bios chips :) With an older bios version there is still the black screen on Ultra2. |

So now Ultra2 also works in XP with modded 128Mb Voodoo5?
When you tested back in early June and you got black screen loading XP did it had a different BIOS than now? |

No. Ultra2 still show the black screen.
Only with Ultra is working well. |

Have you tried to run the 5500pci on a 66Mhz pci slot instead of a normal one??
Perhaps it can use the extra speed?? The agp is nothing morr then a 66Mhz pci version anyway, so ya never know. I will test this with my card coming week, with an athlon xp 2.4Ghz |

bit late to this one, but yes, v5 pci will benefit from the 66MHz pci slot, if you can get a mb which has it.

see my thread for details how much the 64MB 5500PCI benefits from using PCI 66Mhz:
