It is working- While testing at 800 x 600 x 32 bit color (the highest my current test LCD will go) there is a 200 point spread when the extra ram is activated.

32 mb = 2300
64 mb = 2500

<numbers averaged>

Test system is KT-266 with 1800+ 256 mb and Win98

...

After comparing the new BIOS and the old one with a hex editor the only change is the bit for number of SDRAM chipsets.

I wonder why the card was flashed so?

It was noticed while running 2001SE there was some  minor texture flashing the was no longer present with the extra ram activated.

Functionally, is there any difference between a "true" 4800 and a "modded" 4500 with 64MB and the BIOS flash?

I would not think so but only Hank could answer that I think.

Regarding the bios this question could be answered IF TM30 would send me or post his bios from his original 4800. I don't really see that happening...

Really Undecided

I thought TM30 dumped his BIOS for Chosen_One.

will you release the bios or will you keep it a secret like denisf?

I just posted the necessary changes, and i have just modified it for Osckhar. I'm not that selfish. I don't even own a v4   Smiley. But to be certain of the bios, yours, TM30, would really help. Could you dump and send it to me, please?

@Obi: It seems to me like I did ask politely, didn't I?

Let's keep the thread focussed people! Roll Eyes

Third - how about some 32MB / 64MB screenshots comparison. Wink

(a good test would be UT2004 due to it's large textures) Cheesy

I might use funny nicknames, but i think i make it clear that it is me.  Wink If not, than I state that I am the one posting under different aliases. And again bios-wise TM30 could clear this up, and hardware-wise if TM30 an osckhar could compare their copper bords to see if anything is different. Anyway 3 different people (Adrian aka. Komponent, Gary and Oscar) have tested their V4 4800, and all 3 had results that show a performance increase since the extra memory is activated.

I would just like to add that changing the strapping resistor configuration didn't help recognising the extra memory. The only modification needed is in the bios (stricly my opinion for now, don't shoot me if i'm wrong). There is a bit that defines the no. of memory chipsets. It has to be changed from 0 to 1, meaning 2 chipsets instead of 1.

... and what a pain in the "back" was that info that a hardware mod was supposed to be required rather than a simple BIOS hack! I had to strugle with different resistors configurations on the PCB, some sugested even by Hanksemenec, some of my own ideeas with no luck. Good thing that when I became tired of changing resistors, Mikulaish thought: "Let's try with this BIOS-mod too..." (nothing to loose, right?); there are out-there a few prototypes with full out-of-the-factory 64MB RAM soldered (I know about Gdonovan, Oskhar and TM30's cards) but mine being a regular Voodoo 4 4500 designed for 32Mb might just not had the hardware capacity and compatibility to accept additional memory... (cool thing it prouved to finaly be something like a easy task).

I hope everyone remarked Komponent, the starter of this topic. He disserves all the credit for this achievement. Without his work this would not have happened. He was helped from here and there, but in my opinion he should be considered "The papa of homemade v4 4800"  8) RESPECT!

Mikulaish is just being too modest. It was realy team work; everyone of us contributed; I consider a nonsense to call someone the mastermind behind this project or who desserves better credits for the succes; I just happened to end up as the proud owner of that jewel that is this first confirmed and prouven beyond doubt home-made Voodoo 4 4800 (realy, maybe we shouldn't even call it this way; it's only the average Voodoo 4500 that we modded...).
So, RESPECT! back at you Mikulaish, RESPECT! to this great 3DFX community!

can you bench the modded bios with changed timings and the modded bios without changed timings?

1x (changed timings)
tBWL BKWR to Pre at 0
tRL to PRE at 1
Number of Sgram/Sdram chipsets from 0 to 1

1x (timings are original)
tBWL BKWR to Pre at 1
tRL to PREat 0
Number of Sgram/Sdram chipsets from 0 to 1

i want to see the difference if there is one...
