Title: Differences between AALchemy 8164 & 8264 :-X
Post by Obi-Wan_Kenobi on 26.05.06 at 20:50:45
Hi Ya all

Since that Quantum3D has made quite a few AALchemy Graphics subsystems there are 2 that did confuse some people as me as well :)

Quantum3D AALchemy 8164:

Quantum3D AALchemy 8164 printed in PCB :)

Quantum3D AALchemy 8264:

8264 naming next to barcode decail:

As you can see The 8164 has no caps on its Powerboard like the 8264 does and the PSU connectors are different on the 8164 as the 8264.

What is the technical difference between the two?

A major difference is from those pictures is that one of the power regulation boards is flipped compared to the other.

no is not flipped otherwise we should be able to see traces on Gary's power board as well ;) While that ain't the point here.

The board I have is powered by a unique Quantum3D power supply, the board that was on Ebay is powered by a pass through cable from the motherboard power connector.

i think these two boards have different revision... maybee the one on ebay has the newer revision, to make it easier to power this monster!

hehe yeah I thought it would be something like that the Quantum3D power connecter looked quite funny at first hehe :)

So the difference is only the power board? Because the other numbers in "8164" and "8264" are quite clear..  8 VSA-100 per PCB, 64MB of memory per VSA-100. But the "1" and "2" appeared rather strange to me. So the PCB of the graphics card itself (where the VSAs and the memory are located) is the same in 8164 and 8264?

i thought 8164 is one brick of 8x VSA100 (with each 64MB RAM) and 8264 are TWO bricks...

But, two bricks in one Server or seperately in two server linked together? I dunno.

No- The board picture from Ebay has a newer power regulator setup.

Quantum3D came up with a pass-through power supply that interfaces with the motherboard connector.

The AV4 power supply like I have runs over a $1000, I assume the new setup is a tad cheaper.

8164 = 1 board
8264 = 2 board

If you have the time, read through the AAlchemy manuals posted on the Q3D site, most questions are answered.

but how is that new power board powered? do you have to put this cable on the Mainboard (ATX Power connector) and the power supply goes on this Q3D Power Board?

The ATX power supply cable plugs into the AAlchemy power board, and then a cable connects the AAlchemy power board to the ATX power connector on the motherboard.

See the picture from the auction above.

do you also own this new Power Board?

Nope, I have the AV4 power supply.

Maybe if I picked up another 8164 I'd try to find one of the new power boards ;-)
