Yep... someone was that dumb or simply did/does have too much money.

The card does have a black DVI output, which is uncommon and was only used on prototypes or cards being used for quality assurance / reviews.
That is also the reason why the card comes in a special box.

To me the card is nothing special. It seems to be final PCB revision and doesn't have any interesting reworks => A common Voodoo 5 MAC just with a black DVI output.

The seller is a lucky guy.

I know the buyer and he's not dumb at all. That black DVI and that box might worth to others a lot, some guys might say the same thing about a V5 6000: a common old video card from 2000, nothing special.

V5 5500 PCI aren't very easy to find, they aren't super rare though... but V5 5500 proto...now that's rare.

The listing said it was used by Mac Observer for reviewing.
But still 1500  Shocked I can see it being worth more, but dang the seller got lucky.

Then too much moneys Wink Sorry, didn't want to offend anyone.

The thing is, beside the black DVI output, it isn't really an "engineering sample". The PCB is final, the bios too... so what's left beside the package and the black DVI?

Worth 1500 USD? Not at all if I look at my Alphachrome sample, but I only paid an eighth of the price of this card.

What makes the card expensive is just the hype about 3dfx not the technique behind it.

There are enough normal 5500 MAC popping up on Ebay for ~150 USD, you just need to wait.

Edit: The questions I want to ask: Are you collecting rare cards because of the brand or because you want to know everything about the company and the technique?

I guess everyone has their own reasons. I have mnay reasons, I like the way the cards look, it reminds me of the past, I like testing them, etc.

And I like diversity, for example I have a lot of Voodoo2 cards, but each one is unique, differente manufacturer, small layout differences, memory (silicon magic, mosel, etc), pcb color, pcb date, revision, etc.

Unfortunately I cannot afford expensive prototypes or rare cards, but if I had enough money (for this hobby) I would buy such cards without thinking twice.

For you a small detail like black DVI might not worth 1 dolar, for others (me included) might worth a lot Smiley

This card surely worths more than a "regular" VoodooMAC 5500, it's a reviewer's kit, that's a nice thing, although it's pretty "bare" to be a very interesting kit; aside for the cool box I don't see any doc or paper for the tester and like Loeschzwerg wrote already the card has nothing special "except" for the black DVI. I searched for the review at macobserver.com and all I have found is actually a preview: http://www.macobserver.com/article/2000/07/26.13.shtml
Again, surely a cool thing but there is no picture of the card and that is a pity. A good review with real pictures would have been a MUST in this case and it would have increased the coolness of the card.

But it worths SO MUCH? Surely it doesn't in the actual conditions, that's ridiculous as usually things got to be from years by now.

And the long story according to which any 3dfx thing could worth any price because it's unique, because it's about the demand and the offer law, because it's ebay baby, sorry but doesn't stand up anymore.

True, in the end it's all about demand and offer. If there's only one card on the market, but there are 2 buyers who want the card, then the price paid for the card might be very high.

Are you sure? Let me ask you this: how much do you think it's worth a V5 6000? During the last years I saw quite a few V5 6000 cards on the market, some paid even more than 2000 euros for one card. But this is the first V5 5500 PCI with black DVI. Sure, V5 6000 is a legend and it's rare, but it seems that this special V5 5500 is even "more rare".

I've the impression that the discussion took already the point and I think is already over, so whatever reply I would give you would be useless for you.

The demand and offer law is a real concept of which many here have abused and behind which many have hidden themselves. With this assumption any ridiculous price could be legitimate, so any discussion on the matter simply doesn't make any sense, although nobody is willing to admit that any ridiculous price means really any, so who say that a thing doesn't worth anything is quite right as much as who say it worths any cost, so what's the point? None - again, pursuing the reason in such discussions is stupid.

About the trite, never dying and boring question on how much do you think it's worth a V5 6000 I can't reply to this anymore, simply because this forum has already plenty of answers about questions like that. If you really care, use the search tab and you'll find a lot about the matter, mine answers as well, since these questions have been discussed already so many times that I can't enumerate.

Oh, for me isn't. I saw already several of these VoodooMAC 5500 for reviewers with black DVI connecor (except for those protoboards of course), although this is the first one with the box and that, as already I said, it's a nice thing. Is it enough to stick a 1500 USD price tag on it? Sorry, it's not.

End of the line for me Wink

Hello,

Little late but here my opinion since I am a prototype 3Dfx collector too. Does not matter if card is rare, very rare, prototype, reference board or simply a preview sample. When two collectors go for same item. Happens such things. For me it is hard and pure collecting.

Regards,
Oscar.

Hahaha reminds me of the time there was an intense bidding war for a v5 6k with a fracture in one of te PCB layers so it was bricked.

It started at 99c and ending up going for $990 dollars Cool
