Now my voodoo5 is leaving my system for a Aopen-gf4 ti4200 128mb. I am a happay man right now,,, no more trouble and pain in the ass driver problems.. yippiikayeeemothacrappity smackaaaaaaa!!!! Im gonna give my voodoo5 to a poore student or something.. or maybe my worsth enemy.. then he will live his rest of his life with the shit as i have... But! my voodoo3 will still have som life to gain in my Pentium 233 system.

Yes. It's hard for mainstream Voodoo5 owners. The Voodoo5 arrived in the marketplace too late and missed its rightful place. Despite this it did, and does, deliver superior anti-aliasing for driving and flight-sims. But it just doesn't have the fill rate for mainstream fps usage.

3Dfx were a seminal chip maker. The Voodoo Graphics card was a revolution in 3D gaming that I, for one, will never forget. The Voodoo2 was a capable improvement. But, arguably, the Voodoo3 was the beginning of the decline. It should have delivered far (rather than slightly) more than the Voodoo2 SLI and it should have done so in 32 bit colour. And the Voodoo4 and 5 were really a year too late.

From my (admittedly very biased) point of view, Voodoo cards are now only really in their element when delivering the graphics for older classic games based on glide and, sometimes, OpenGL and Direct3D. I never followed 3Dfx as they became "3dfx" so I am used to utilising the capabilities of the Voodoo2 alongside something more contemporary and perhaps capable.

What I'm saying crx is, that if you have any classic glide-based or other older games that need that Voodoo magic, then fit a Voodoo2 or two alongside that Ti4200. You won't regret it. And it will stand as a testament to the most infuencial 3D chip maker that ever was. Grin

Well, the time will probably come for everyone, it's just a question of when and why...

Right now, it looks like DirectX8.1 capabilities are pushing 3dfx out, followed by other, generic Driver issues.

Older Cards (Voodoo1,2,3) are probably soon, or already hitting their Memory Limits (Games requiring more than available Texture Memory).

Additionally, the upcoming Geometry Detail levels will hurt even Voodoo4/5 cards, reducing framerates...

But no matter what, those Cards commonly are indeed known for serving their owners far longer and more successful, than any other 3D Card in History (at least that I know of)

That's true. And, to me at least, great computer games are like great novels. I'll go back to replay the best ones time after time. And only the best stay on my system to be dabbled with regularly.

Sure, some of these are a series of games. If you count separate titles it would push the Voodoo2s off top place. But then, a lot of the titles that the GeForce runs it does by default because they're VGA or VESA mode games. Additionally a lot of people might run some of the titles I run on the Voodoo2s on the GeForce (perhaps Half-Life, Quake II or System Shock 2). But I honestly prefer the appearance and performance of these games when they're running on the kind of hardware they were written for! Arguably the only title that needs the GeForce's performance and more modern features is Grand Theft Auto 3!

My point is that, if you want to run some classic games at their best in the future you're going to need some classic hardware. Wink

I have two Voodoo 2's (Creative) in an SLI setup in my Athlon XP 2400+ and I love 'em to bits! 8)

NOTHING (and I mean NOTHING!) beats a good bash on Unreal Tourney in GLiDE on Voodoo 2's in SLI. Grin

My uncle also has a Voodoo 5 5500 AGP in his Athlon XP 1600+ (my old CPU!) and that pretty much ROX for UT2003 using 3D Analyser (3DA for short...).

I also got (for an Xmas prezzy) a Voodoo 5 5500 PCI for my other mate...had a busted fan on it, but I built a replacement fan and it works fine now! Cheesy

And as it shall be said in Shakespearian speak...

I think I, seriosly, never will say goodbye...

I've had manu old computers - a 25mhz until the beginning of 2000... Shocked

Byt then got a 400mhz with Riva 128... I could play many games on it - but nit the new ones like return to Castle Wolfenstein...

When my mom and dad separated, in the late 2001, I sat there again with my 25mhz... After a while I got a 166mhz with Ati Rage 4mb... Could play Quake 2 max - as a matter of fact I am writing on that computer right now because my other one i broken!

We decided to upgrade our 166mhz but the man in the computer store recommended us to buy a second hand computer instead... They had a 850mhz Athlon with 128mb ram and Voodoo 5 - it costed 3500skr (1$=8-9skr) The time then were summer 2002... We bought the computer and i thought it were pretty cool with a voodoo 5 - I had read about it and I thought it were cool - and for that price!

Now I still have that computer and maybe I will upgrade it with a new card - but I will always save my Voodoo and have it in another computer or something like that!
I will never giv it away or sell it or throw it into the garbage. the card is computer history and if nothing else it will be decoration on my wall!

And in performance it can take many new games. If they just do them 3dfx friendly like ut2003 then it will function nice. Btw - why use 3danalyze for ut2003? It functions without it!

If you upgrade your computer with much memory and fast processors then you should be able to play the latest games. If software like 3danalyze will be more advanced soo we can emulate all the functions on a geforcefx that the voodoo 5 doesn't have then we can play nice games just we have a fast enough processor...

No matter how it goes - I will keep my Voodoo - 4ever!

I reacently changed from my Voodoo 3 2K to a Radeon 9K - And I am not a Happy Dude...

Sure Unreal 2 and UT2k3 runs without crashing, But I will more than likely go Blind from all the Flashing Textures. Nothing seems to rectify it not even what ATI tells me should work.

If I could just have found A V5 5500 for a reasnoble price... But here in ZA a 2nd hand V5 cost about the same as what I paid for the Radeon - witch is to much in my opinion.

My old V3 served me faithfully for More than 4 Years, no glitch. Why did 3dfx have to go under? Couldn't they have lived for ever?

Now after about 1.5 Months my GPU is already facing a posible change. Crap world we live in... Cry

Patience, I hear you on the networking thing, got seven machines my self.

Anyway, when I finally upgraded, my V5 went into my 1800+ machine running 98, and I just set up a PII 266 box to run some of my older stuff with my V2 running 95. There are just some games that you always seem to go back to that look best on a Voodoo card. The Thief series for one, no can tell me that Thief looks better on anything else other then on a Voodoo card. Sitting in the dark, lights out, Sound blasting, and AA turned full on is just like no other experience in that game.

There will be a time for everyone to upgrade, hopefully there are some other options coming out other then just Nvidia or ATI (if they ever come out with the Kryo series 5 chips), and with Diamond coming back into the video market, there might be some other cards to choose from. Any way good luck with what ever card you choose.
