EF 2000 v2.0 w/ Voodoo 1 need help
21.09.10 at 23:35:07

Hi guys,
I'm trying to run EF 2000 v2.0 with my Diamon Monster 3D (Voodoo 1 board) and when I try to play a mission or a quick game it crashes and says at the prompt: grsstqueryhardware failed, which means I can get into the menu's but can't fly. Do I need to have some SST variables set first for the Voodoo 1 in order for it to be initialized and recognized by the game? I understand that this game doesn't use the glide2x.ovl driver, but it looks to me like from that error is that it can't find the Voodoo 1 on the pci bus.  I wonder if this motherboard is too modern for it to work. Thanks for the help.

Here is the machine I'm trying to run on:

Motherboard: DFI G4E620-B, Intel i845 chipset
CPU: Pentium 4 Northwood 3.06 Ghz
Ram: 2 Gb DDR333 ram (running at 266), Using Rloew's ram patch to support more than 512mb.
Primary: EVGA Nvidia 6800 Ultra
Secondary: Diamond Monster 3D, Voodoo 1, 4 Mb
Sound Card: Creative AWE64 Gold
Game Card: Thrustmaster ACM
Triple Boot: Windows 98 SE, Windows 95 OSR 2.5, DOS 7.1

I assume the card works with other games (glquake)?

Okay I figured this out. The 3DFX Voodoo 1 doesn't work properly on chipsets after 440 LX (or 440 BX). I tried it on an Intel i820 motherboard with a Pentium III 1 Ghz and it just doesn't get read correctly on the PCI bus. I put the Voodoo 1 in an Intel 440 LX board with a Pentium II 266 and the card works perfectly in EF 2000 v2.0. I believe there is an issue with PCI compliancy here. It appears that the Voodoo 1 does not work with the PCI 2.2 spec. The 440 LX board is the last you can use it reliably on, possibly 440 BX, but I have not tried that one.

well,voodoo1 being not compatible with many newer chipsets is old news, but I was under the impression that p3 intel chipsets should all work ok.actually,I have tested some p4 intel chipsets as well, and they work fine,as long as they are for socket478 cpus.everything newer than that fails miserably.

Let me qualify that. SOME DOS games and Windows games that read the glide2x.dll or the glide2x.ovl DO work on my Intel i845 and i820 machines, and other games try but just output this weird checkerboard looking pattern with different colors.

But games that make direct calls to the Voodoo 1 like EF2000 won't work at all on anything beyond 440LX (and maybe BX), the game simply will not find the card on the PCI bus.

Likewise, my i845 now uses Voodoo2 SLI and a Geforce 6800 ultra. The Voodoo2 SLI works perfectly if the game uses the glide2x.dll, glide3x.dll, or glide2x.ovl driver. If the game makes direct calls to the Voodoo2, it can't find it on the PCI bus even with the batch file making the Voodoo2 emulate a Voodoo1. In other words, you should be able to make EF 2000 run on a Voodoo2 using the batch file technique, but it's the same problem as using a Voodoo1 in an Intel i845. Same result.

The problem as far as I can see, is due to PCI compliancy and standard. The Voodoo1 and 2 don't look like they are PCI 2.2 compliant.

THIS TOPIC IS THE BEST!

I have THE SAME DAMNED issues with my Pentium 3 based on i815 chipset too! The Voodoo1 or Voodoo2 trying to run Carmageddon (game which calls directly to the 3dfx card) shows weirdo pattern on screen, but games that run under Glide2x.dll or glide3x.dll runs juts fine!! In the other hand, I have a 440BX based plattform based, I will run test on that PC with my Voodoo1. So far, with my Voodoo2 under 440BX mobo runs with no trouble at all.

Besides, my Voodoo1 installed on my i430TX mobo, runs with flawless too!

It's a shame that these video cards just don't run as fine as they should on a newer mobo. In fact, I have to sell my ex P3 1.0Ghz Intel i815 because of this, and turnet to buy a Soyo 6BA+ with a P3 450.

GREAT EXPLANATION again!  Wink Thank you SO much, your answer has resumed everything I tried to say this time, but my English isn't good as yours (hablo espaņol)  Grin
