Title: unknow 3dfx motherboard
Post by m14radu on 18.11.13 at 20:10:39
found this picture with the intel chipset but marked 3dfx....

what do you think guys ?

i never saw one like this before.... :)

The cards in the picture were available for sale, and they are now already sold :(
Are this now in the hand of a collector from here ?

Doesn't look like the MSI MS-6168 motherboard. The motherboard in the picture does look like a 440BX-based motherboard. Do you have higher resolution photo's?

According to the new 3dfx logo (and time-frame of slot 1) it's probably an Avenger-based motherboard. Beneath the first and second PCI slot you can see the top of an heatsink (above the first memory chip of the Voodoo5).

Also; isn't the Voodoo 5 6000 missing a part in the upper left? The round thing/coil?

Could this be a Brazos board?? Terrible to produce due to the complexity, but never got passed a few prototype boards as far as I've heard

Did you mean Voodoo3 right?
BTW could be simply the Super I/O controller, damn, the pic is too poor :-/

What I think?

Bingo!

...and yes, that chip beneath the v56k is a Super I/O controller (#2 in the picture above) Nope, it's the onboard sound chipset, Aureal Vortex, my fault. The Super I/O controller is located just above the FDD connector.

Great discovery.
does somebody own this board?

I would like to see more pictures :)

I think this is a picture of the ONLY piece of 3DFX hardware that might actually be worth as much, maybe even more, then a Rampage.
If that board is in working condition........oh man......I don't think they even ever made a small batch run for thos, just a few prototypes.

EDIT

I correct myself, the board would be worth quite a lot, more then a 6000 in my opinion, but not as much as a rampage, since it is voodoo3 based, and so not really new tech

Hi,

Package came in today.
I contacted with seller back year 2005 and always same answer- NO INTERESTED TO SELL.

Finally I convinced him and package came in today. Patience is a virtud.  :D

yeah I'd love to know what that mobo goes for as well :)

And more importantly.....are you planning on trying to get it to life, this mobo, if it doesn't work?

@osckhar:

I see a Voodoo5 6000 inside the package with an etag :)

A new one for all 3dfx users?

I dont think seller wants I share the amount I paid for the package. Of course, less than buy a Rampage card.

PICS very soon. I need test them and take some pics.

@ultima- I wish motherboard is in fully condition. So NOT REWORK needed. :)

Yupe, I think the time arrived and I will show all 3Dfx fans what rare cards I have gotten later to do a hard research and contact with more than 150 engineers from 3Dfx since 2008 year.

Stay tunned - Amazing jewels I got.

Ok, I can respect the wish of the seller....let's keep it at pretty expensive. :)

You really have me drooling over the keyboard.......can't wait for the pics you will make.

I really help you hope it is in working condition.

Could the seller know how many of thse boards actually exist??

Yes, I will. Not worry.

At the moment motherboard even not power up. It comes without any jumper cap and there is not info about where is the jumper power sw the board. I tested all the possibles jumpers but not way yet.

Motherboard looks in amazing good condition and it comes with Not For Resale stickers.

Very nice Oscar.

Perhaps you can find the correct pins by measuring with a multimeter. Try measuring between pins and the 3.3V PWR_ON signal from the 20-pin ATX power connector. Not sure if this works on any motherboard, though.

Picture looks good Oscar!

I see that the battery is not placed. In the past I've seen some motherboards that did not boot up if the battery was not present.

Nice one Oscar! Now this is really rare collectors stuff!!!
Btw what slot is this in front of the AGP slot?! Is if for an upgrade card (combined with the AGP) for socket processors?!

Title: Re: unknow 3dfx motherboard

looks to be an AMR slot:

btw, did anyone notice that this board lacks the onboard dvi connector that is on the other picture?

Great card Osckhar !
What about the voodoo5 6000 ?
Seems to be a rev 3400 :)
Is ist functional ? Please post some pictures with the card too.

Looking at the PCB It doesn't seem a DVI connector missing, but the midi port (with audio jacks) instead...
I hope to be wrong, otherwise it won't be possible to enjoy Aureal Vortex sound on-board :-/

Workaround if you can't find the jumper:
Short Pin 14 of the ATX main connector to ground for a second, the powersupply will then power up.

The power switch jumper for the frontpanel is doing exactly the same ;)

Edit: Another idea, use a multimeter and check ATX pin 14 against the front panel connections, you should then be able to find the power switch. One pin next to it should then lead to ground, which you can check also by measuring.

Looks like it, but on the link you have shown, it can't go in front of the AGP bus (it's actually a little bit behind it), not to mention to have a spare space as on the Oscar's board.

And yeah, goriath is right, it's the midi + speakers/line in/mic ports missing, but it seems it's all there but the ports.

actually it can, it's just not common.

In this case you can use the AMR slot when you don't occupy the agp slot and just use the onboard V3

BTW, what kinda ram is that for the V3? -6? I seem to remember they wanted to put a 200Mhz part on the Brazos, or was I misinformed?

From my experience you need an older power supply for those motherboards (slot 1 and older motherboards). Try to find and old (but good) ATX PSU, ideally something without the P4 connector.

Something like Delta or Forton 250W would be nice, newer model with P4 connector might work, but if the PSU has 20+4 main connector and SATA connectors it will not work, I believe because it doesn't have enough 5V power.

Thanks at all!

I did some small progress. Now motherboard power ups but I still did not wake up the lady. :) Now, I need to re-check all the jumpers and specially cpu jumper set. I wish it works as all the motherboards for setting the correct speed to the CPU.

I keep you informed.

ps. This motherboard is driving me crazy since I have found 3 jumpers makes the motherboard power on. It is very odd... Important all the component are getting hot.

Regards,
Oscar.

I would cross reference the jumpers with other BX440 boards, or whatever intel chipset is on there.
jumper settings should be the same, just set it to extremely low, to be sure you're not overclocking and go from there.

And I would put cooling paste on the chips and heatsinks, as to cool them down a little

Hi,

I own a P3 500Mhz 100Mhz front bus but I still did not get pc starts. There are 4 jumpers for CPU setting it and I used ON OFF OFF ON / It gives 5x multiplier  and also tried OFF ON ON OFF since motherboard jumper set does not shows any info even where is the first pin and what is ON / OFF position.
Perhaps bios is not compatible with such cpu and I would need another CPU. There is a jumper for set 66MHz. I guess by default motherboard works 100MHz front side bus.

Yes, I am using a newer PSU. Anyone can confirm old motherboards will not work using new PSU generation?

ps. I still thinking the problem is for not right jumper set. I used as reference the picture goriath uploaded but sadly in the motherboard there are not mark or sign how to use correctly the jumper position.

Try to use an P2 CPU with 66Mhz bus. Even if the jumpers are set wrong it should default to minium BUS and multiplier values. Did you ask the engineer if he has some manuals to share for this mainboard to get it going?

I can confirm issues with older mainboards when using newer PSUs with high wattage. A PPro mainboard I had would rarely start-up or just freeze during post when combined with a 420W Chieftec PSU which works fine on newer boards. An old 250W Sparkle PSU worked without issues on the same Ppro mainboard so I do suggest getting a similar PSU for testing the 3dfx prototype mainboard you have.

Good luck,
G1nX

Yeah Oscar, better use old PSU (older than the P4 era) and a P2 processor, just to be sure. I have both, but unfortunately they are back in Bulgaria, otherwise I would have given them to you...

Thanks for advising guys!

@EMPEROR- no problem. Is time to buy an old PSU and a P2.

If I am right back 2003 year on ebay had an ebay auction called for charity where Nvidia sold a V5-6000 A2 and also a Brazos motherboard.

Any one remember such auction?
Any one know who was the buyer? Yupe, stupid question but who know...

ps. My seller does not know nothing about motherboard. So, he cant help us.

My advice is to go for a covington or mendocino celeron:

As you dont know how old the bios is on that board...

In that case I would advice to use a Pentium II 'Klamath' as it's the first Slot 1 CPU. These Pentium II's use a 66MHz FSB and are available in the 233MHz to 300MHz range. But placing the Brazos in the time-frame of the Voodoo 3 I think any Pentium II (=Deschutes, up to 450MHz) will work.

Yeah, that's what I was about to say Oscar, use Klamath 233/266/300.
