Title: Myth: The Fallen Lords (V1.3) on V5 5500 Post by Renner on 29.01.06 at 22:57:24
Does anyone have any experience with this combination?
I've just recently set up a machine with a Radeon 9800 Pro as the primary display device and a V5 5500 as a secondary device. Everything seems to work, but when I installed Myth: TFL to test the Voodoo card, the game won't let me use Glide rendering (grays the option out). If anyone happens to know something about this subject, I'd sure appreciate enlightenment. In the meantime I'm going to try to different configurations just to see if it's an issue with the V5 being a secondary display device... |

Well, now I can get it run in 3Dfx mode, but I can't get my Radeon to run anything...
??? This time I set the motherboard to init PCI first (the V5), and installed the 3Dfx drivers before the ATI drivers. That makes the V5 my primary graphics adapter, and it's detected by Myth/Myth II as an available 3Dfx rendering device. It runs both games flawlessly in that mode. However, games and 3DMark 2001 SE don't detect my Radeon (which I wanted to use as the DirectX rendering device. Only the V5 shows up. This is in Windows 98 Gold, DirectX 8.1b, using the WHQL 1.04 V5 drivers and the WHQL Catalyst 4.3 Radeon drivers. Not sure what to try now... |

As far as I know, secondary Video Cards have no Direct3D accelleration due to a Windows limitation.
(Add-On 3D-only Boards are handled differently as Multimedia Devices, thus they are not affected) It will not be possible to use both Video Cards the way you wanted, only the primary Adapter will have full functionality. (not sure if that applies to all Versions of Windows though) |

I use this set-up on windows 2000 (Radeon X850XT-PE agp & voodoo 5500 pci and it works flawlessly) 8)
The Radeon is the primary, the voodoo as secondary. I select which card I want to use in display properties > settings, plug my monitor into the selected card and it works like a charm ;D I get full use of d3d, opengl and glide from the 5500. This link pretty much explains the entire installation procedure: http://www.3dfxzone.it/enboard/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1942 |

Interesting, and disappointing. I was hoping it would work such that I could have two monitors already plugged in, and when I launched a game I would be able to just select either rendering device in the video config. Guess not. Kind of makes me wonder why so many games have a dropdown list where you can pick the rendering device (actual card name + API) when it can only ever be one card (and the API's it can handle)...
Oh well. I'll give this a shot right away (hopefully it works in 98 ). Thanks for the info. |

Update...
In Win98, it doesn't appear that you can switch primary displays. I can enable the "Extend my desktop onto this monitor", but that doesn't give me an option to make it the primary, and I can't turn that option off for the primary display. If someone DOES know how to do this, even if it's a hack, PLEASE PLEASE let me know... ;) Now... I can still get close to having it work, even so. If I extend the desktop onto the V5 display, that allows Myth to detect that a 3Dfx rendering device is available, and I can pick 3Dfx in the video preferences. If I do that, all of the 2D GUI stuff (game menu and movies) stay on the primary monitor, through the Radeon. Once a mission loads, though, it shows up on the second monitor, from the V5. However, it's garbled. The picture becomes alternating horizontal lines of real image and "junk". And on the primary monitor, Myth is minimized. Worse, the mouse stays with the primary monitor, so that all mouseclicks are interpreted by the desktop, NOT the game, just like when you minimize a game to the taskbar. Then I tried Myth II. It works better -- the 3D image is rendered perfectly on the second monitor, no problem -- but I still have the mouse trouble. So somehow I need to get the mouse strictly attached to what's going on with the second display... and I have no idea how to go about that. Starting to wonder if I might be screwed on this project. >:( ;) |

So... I broke down and tried Zeckensack's Glide Wrapper.
And... it runs Myth and Myth II flawlessly. Thus... I may have to give up on my darling V5 and just stick with the boring but mighty 9800 Pro. :-[ Myth is the only older game I really want to play that needs Glide for decent rendering, and Myth II actually has a perfectly usable DirectX engine. I was just sort of stuck on the coolness factor of having that ol' V5 in there for the Glide muscle... |

..ever considered v2 SLI? should run like butter in most systems.

Yeah, I did consider it... but then I'd have to buy the cards, and if you've seen what I generally do to my hardware, you'll understand that it could get to be awfully expensive...
;D The GLIDE wrapper looks like it's going to be good enough in terms of functionality, and it does simplify things quite a bit (one monitor, no switching). I guess I'm just not hardcore enough. ;) |

..the wrapper is not enough for me yet (no multitexturing, hitman 1 needs that).but I must say Incubation does look great in hw accelerated mode using 1280*960 res with 4xFSAA and 16x aniso ;D
I have a raddy 9800 too,btw.nice card. |

Whoa... how do you enable FSAA with the wrapper?! I must have missed that.

force it via radeon drivers (control panel or ccc).

I actually tried that, but couldn't see any effect in Myth. I just assumed that the wrapper toasted it... must be the game itself.
Or, I was just blind. :o In any case, it looks like I'm doing the V2 SLI thing now, so I won't worry about the wrapper. :P |
