Title: Quake 3 Arena and voodoo Post by jblue on 06.04.05 at 13:56:35
Why Quake 3 Arena doesn't have a glide support ?
Was this game designed only for D3D and openGl ? I saw that in the system menu is present a voodoo options but I cannot enable it .Why ? ( I have a voodoo 2 accelerator with the latest drivers avaible ) I use the Wicked miniGl driver and the game runs verry good .This fact is due to the driver itself or has the voodoo 2 hardware support ,because in the system menu the in-use driver's name is "default" not " voodoo" |

Because the lead programmer at Id software supports opengl. Quake3 doesn't support D3D either. |

ignore the voodoo option in the video options, use "default" with wickedgl, its the best you can get.enabling "voodoo" will switch to the 3dfx ICD (if present),and voodoo2 ICD is very bad.dont do it.
q3 arena supports d3d (very lame D3D),just create a fake opengl32.dll file in the game folder and the game will start under D3D.not recommended. |

Heh, never knew about that D3D hack for Quake 3! ;D
But seriously...you can also use a D3D -> MESA wrapper such as ALTOGL from here ;): - http://ice.prohosting.com/dvsite/askii64/files/altogl.zip It used to be available from ALT software (who programmed it using MESA) but it's not on their page anymore! :'( Ah well! :P |

When i remember right q3a looks for 3dfxvgl.dll in the system directory but in the latest voodoo1 and 2 drivers it was named 3dfxogl.dll. Too bad falconfly's old guestbook isn't available anymore. We used it as a forum before this one started and i remember in one of my 'post' i had exactly the same problem with the latest voodoo1 driver.
Regards, Andreas @paulpsomiadis That altogl must have been very common for cards with no or bad ogl support. The mdk2 launcher searches for opengl32.dll, 3dfxogl.dll (3dfx installed opengl), 3dfxvgl (3dfx standalone opengl), altogl.dll and opengl.dll (sgi's software renderer) as valid opengl renderes. |

Copy 3dfxOGL.dll from the Voodoo Graphics drivers to the Quake 3 directory and rename it "opengl32.dll"

@nudgegoonies - yup, it was a good 3rd party alternative to OpenGL drivers. :D
The only downside is that it relies rather heavily on the D3D functions of the card it is being run on... :-/ @gdonovan - yup, that'll work too! ;D |

One strange thing about q3a based games on my specs is that they run fastest with latest 3dfx icd 761 (through opengl32.dll in system directory and using default opengl in game options). I tried wickedgl, mesafx, koolsmokey opengl32.dll, altogl and believe me or not gldirect, but they all were slower.
No i found a game that is faster with wickedgl, at least on my specs: MDK2. The only disadvantage is that the game only uses renderes in the windows\system directory. So i copied wickedgl's opengl32.dll as 3dfxvgl.dll in the windows\system directrory and selected 3dfx standalone opengl. Works :-) Regards, Andreas |

Good news.
Finaly my quake 3 runs with the original voodoo driver The driver is there and it's enabled. All settings at maximum (except the resolution wich is 640x480). Amazing gameplay ,smoth textures, great Special FX and a great speed (max 90 FPS). And when I play with the Lightmap option enabled it's verry cool. I playied in multiplayer on CTF maps.(10 vs 10 )and it was like the third world war. I love this game on voodoo2 . |

Yeahh!
F..kin' - "A"! ;) Quake 3 is the mean game. I play it from time to time when I wanna get some blood and guts at my "voodoo3" screen! 8) |

WicketGL would fix your problem there ;)

would WickedGL also work on the 5500 AGP/PCI's? because, Q3A on my 5500 AGP/PCI boards does jitter sometimes @ 1024 x 768 x32 @ max details so I think 90 fps on V3 is abit overdone, okay unless you use 640x480x16 hehe.
on my Dual OpteronDP 244 setup , I get a quivering sound from my SB Audigy2 Platinum when I play with the Voodoo5 5500 PCI in Quake3, but when I use the Raddy X80)XT PE the quivering sound is gone, I really wonder what this could be, anyone ideas? |

Come on, let's try Telejano Quake engine: http://telejano.berlios.de
Quake becomes very beautiful, yeah. ;) |
