Why not upgrade a V3's memory?
28.10.06 at 13:35:54

We're talking a lot about upgrading the memory on Voodoo 4/5 cards. But what about Voodoo 3's?

The amount of V3's that can reach 200MHz and beyond is far greater than the amount of V4/5's. So why not put faster memory on a V3?

I know, a V3 is limited to 16MB, but it performs almost the same as a V4 in 16bit mode. So wouldn't it make more sense to upgrade a V3's memory?

with faster ns ram you mean?

is an idea, but 16MB is still the limitation hehe the DGRAM cards do have space for extra ram modules, like the 1000 AGP 16MB and Velocity 200 have them filled.

might be a nice idea for an overclockings party Smiley

Where would you find 200MHz 2MB/chip RAM? It must be extreamly rear. Most V3s have 183MHz (5.5nsec) Ram  Tongue anyway. Gain would be marginal

Maybe it's possible to install fast and larger RAM. In case it works the card will only detect 16MB (instead of al the RAM installed).
Just like installing 32Mbit chips with 8 datatraces on an Intel 440BX, it will only use 50% of the installed RAM Smiley
