Universal AGP
21.06.05 at 22:07:44

Has anyone got experience with universal AGP mobos & 3dfx cards? I'm getting one (socket A) and I have never used or seen working such universal agp slot equipped board.
Any opinions/hints from ones who tried it are welcome.
(When I was choosing mine I tought it would be a good solution for a mid-range testing board. btw: cpu thunderbird 1200)

The question is: Which chipset has the mainboard? If it is a board with VIA KT333 or older it provides 3.3V, too, but all chipsets since the KT400 respectively NForce1 provide only 1.5V AGP-voltage so you can't install 3dfx-cards (except Voodoo 4).

It's a QDI KinetiZ 7E with VIA KT-133A chipset.
Every info page states that it has universal AGP and afaik it should work on both 3.3 and 1.5 voltages
( http://www.ertyu.org/~steven_nikkel/agpcompatibility.html )
Someone who had it running might give an opinion.
(it -> referring to any universal AGP equipped board)

As I said: the format of the AGP-slot is relatively irrelevant because it's determined by the chipset if that provides 3.3V AGP-voltage or not. The mainboard-manufacturer can install an AGP universal-slot although the chipset doesn't have universal support, that was the problem when the first Intel P4-chipsets with SDR-RAM-support (i845) came out and many manufacturers delivered the boards with an AGP universal-slot even though the i845 could provide only 1.5V.
The KT133(A) has an AGP1x/2x/4x-interface with 1.5V as well as 3.3V-support.
On Intel-machines you can see it easier: all P3-chipsets and below have (if they have AGP Wink ) universal AGP up to 4x, all later chipsets (for P4) have only AGP with 0.8 or 1.5V.

Something to be aware of- Even if a chipset supports 3.3 volt AGP it's up to the motherboard maker to offer the option or not in the bios. I have seen a few KT-333 boards that did NOT have 3.3V support.

Best to ask and check around.

I'll probably just wait until I get mine and see (without fireworks involved  Grin ) how it works out.
Anyway for some more info about this one that I'm getting:
mobo: http://www.qdigrp.com/qdisite/eng/products/K7E.htm
chipset: http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/chipsets/legacy/kt133a/
It seems quite fine to me... reading these descriptions I suppose it should work somehow on both types/voltages.
I'll report when I get and test it

Mhm...well, if I remember correct...yes, Universal AGP slot works with both type of voltages (3,3V/1,5V...2X/4X)

It is suppose too BUT I have run accross many that DO NOT as I have already stated.

Don't assume, check with other users.
