Title: Voodoo with Radeon AGP card
Post by Capt_Canada on 27.11.04 at 20:30:17
Hi all

I just dusted off my old Creative Labs Voodoo2 card and I am trying to install it in my Win98 rig.

I am unable to get Win98 to detect it as a Voodoo2, as I am sure it did when I first had it. It just sees it as a "PCI Multimedia Device"

The Radeon I have is an AGP card, and I have the V2 card connected to it via the passthru cable.

I don't have the original installation disk, but since the card isn't being detected, it's not a big deal.

Any ideas as to why Win98 isn't seeing the card as a Voodoo2?

Thanks,

By default, Win95/98/WinME recognize the Voodoo2 as a "PCI Multimedia Device", so that's completely normal.

Once you install a proper Driver, it should work flawless.

I  have downloaded some V2 reference drivers. I then extracted them. I then reinstalled the multimedia device drivers using the dir where I extracted the new drivers.

It seems to work fine, except that when I get the desktop the system freezes with the hourglass cursor, or sometimes, the system just keeps the hourglass cursor and when I try to ctrl alt delete, it hangs.

Any ideas?

Hm, what Driver exactly did you download ?

Did you check the Temperature of your Voodoo2?
(in some Systems, they can significantly overheat)

Also, make sure your PCI related BIOS options are set to safe values, after all it's an old PCI Card.

If you run an Athlon based System, you'll likely need Athlon compatible 3rd party Drivers, or use one of the FastVoodoo2 Driver releases.

I downloaded the latest reference drivers from this page:
http://www.falconfly.de/voodoo2.htm

As for my pci bios options, the only thing I have found is the primary vid card option, which is set to AGP. I will check for others.

Thanks

FalconFly and anyone else, I too ran into this problem a long time ago.

I was Running Windows ME, a ATI 8500dv, and a voodoo 1, and I couldn't get 3dfx modes to work....

If I wanted to try this again, would I have to turn off 'Fast Write' ? I don't know how to disable 3d. I do know that the Voodoo 1 works with 2d cards, not 3d, unless there is some way to disable 3d? ???

Can anyone tell me how to disable 3d? Is it Fast Write I need to run off?

Also, would I be getting the speed of a ATI 8500 or a ATI 9800 Pro? because I know the voodoo 1 is a video acelerator, but since you can't acelerate something faster it should run at 229Mhz or 380Mhz right? Also my current system has a 16x PCI slot.

Can someone help me with this info? Thanx

just install the 3dfx cards manually via Hardwar device manager ;)

I did succeed with my X800XT PE AGP and Voodoo5 5500 PCI Combo also ;)

check:
http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/albums/album93/Voodoo5_5500_PCI_USA_detection.thumb.jpg

here the X800XT PE AGP as Primary:
http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/albums/album93/ASUS_AX800XT_PE_AGP_sellected_3creens_visible.thumb.jpg

and here the Voodoo5 5500 PCI as primary sellected:
http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/albums/album93/Voodoo5_5500_PCI_USA_on_Dual_OpteronDP_244.thumb.jpg

that was done on this system, Dual OpteronDP 244 CG ;D
http://www.3dfx.ch/gallery/albums/album93/Opterons.thumb.jpg

So what you do is not that hard at all, just download the latest driver aka FastVoodoo2 ver 4.6:
http://www.3dfxzone.it/dir/3dfx/voodoo2/downloads/fv2_4.6_9x/index.htm

and install the driver manually via Device Manager ;) Then your problem should be solved.

uninstall your current voodoo2 drivers (add or remove programs in the control panel),and do as described here (see drivers/win9x).that should get you up and running..

The only thing is, I was talking about hooking up my voodoo 1 with my ATI 9800 Pro a-i-w. I didn't want to make another topic since it's similar to this topic. Instead of voodoo 2, I'm talking about a voodoo 1.

Maybe is it because the Voodoo 1 can only support something like 8bit colors? or 16bit colors?

I have a Diamond Monster Voodoo 1 4mb pci and want to use it with my ATI 9800 Pro a-i-w, but I don't think that it will enable 3dfx, like when I tried a year & a 1/2 ago with the ATI 8500dv a-i-w.

I'd only use voodoo cards on windows 9x. But if somehow it does work, would the voodoo 1 diamond monster 4mb pci be running faster than 75mhz because my ATI 9800 Pro runs at core 380Mhz mem 340Mhz -?

I hope you know what I mean, what I'm trying to do, and that my problem is not being able to use 3dfx because the voodoo 1 seems like like a useless card hooked up to my other faster ati cards. Because when I tried to use NFS2 SE in 3dfx it wouldn't work. I even have the origonal diamond monster 3d driver cd, a copy of it via cdr.

thanx for the interest, I'll try this again, but I'm pretty sure it won't work, just like it didn't work nearly 2 years ago.

My voodoo 3 3000 has no problems, but since it's only a 450Mhz processor Im using and a ata/66 ibm hd, you can see that anything newer than that pretty much lags or shutters, unless I over clock (cpu &/or v3)which I don't want to do. I might try these 3rd party drivers on the voodoo 1 if I hook it up to my 9800, and see if that will work. :/

These are alot of questions, I'll try to answer them step by step ;)

If I wanted to try this again, would I have to turn off 'Fast Write' ?

Fast Writes is an AGP-specific performance Option, therefor  it will affect only your AGP Card (Radeon). It is known to cause severe problems on some Systems (e.g. many AthlonXP owners have to turn it off to ensure stability).
Technically, this will not affect your 3dfx PCI Card at all, so enable it if you can, disable if your Radeon/System becomes unstable .

I don't know how to disable 3d. I do know that the Voodoo 1 works with 2d cards, not 3d, unless there is some way to disable 3d?

Actually the Voodoo can work just as fine with 3D Cards as well, but it will always (with the exception of Glide which the Radeon doesn't support) remain the secondary 3D Adapter. Thus, it would never be used unless specifically enabled from within the Game Options (if such an option is available, that is)

There are a couple of older Utilities to address this Problem (at least for Direct3D) floating around, but they haven't been updated in a long time and likely are not tested on modern Systems (should still work though).

Also, would I be getting the speed of a ATI 8500 or a ATI 9800 Pro? because I know the voodoo 1 is a video acelerator, but since you can't acelerate something faster it should run at 229Mhz or 380Mhz right? Also my current system has a 16x PCI slot.

The 3dfx Card will not speed up your Radeon nor the way around. Both will still run unchanged at their specifications.
The term "accelerator" was born at times where there were only 2D Cards in use. As soon as the 3dfx Card takes over, it will 'accelerate' 3D, while the Primary Adapter is basically not used at all anymore.
You have to select which 3D Adapter to use and consequently will get the normal performance and features of that specific Adapter alone.

FalconFly thank you sooo much. That solves a lot of my questions.

I'll give it a shot. I hooked up my 60gig IDE, thou I boot up my SATA 1st (XP Pro). Hopefully I can create a dual boot OS if I install Windows 9x on the IDE. Unsure thou, as I have my SATA in RAID 0 and don't know if I have to disable RAID Technology in my Bios.

I can probably figure that out on my own. Thanx everybody, and I'm sorry FalconFly if it seems like I'm a pest. I don't like to bother people or flood boards
